MarketTantrik
GI's First Impressions of Battlefield : Bad Company Thanks to Yashdeep Bali of EA India and our very own HundredProofSam, I had managed to get my grubby paws on the code of Battlefield : Bad Company (Xbox 360 : Private Closed Beta). I have spent the last few days trying the game out and the following are my first impressions. Veterans of online multiplayer shooters like Battlefield 2 and Call of Duty 4 will feel right at home in this game in that tts a semi realistic depiction of modern warfare. The setting for the game is some middle-eastern nation. The closed beta is MP only and players can choose to play as the attackers (the US coalition) or the defenders (insert random jehadi group). The gameplay consists of the attackers taking over control points on the map in a particular sequence, thereby winning the game. Instead of the usual "stand around a flag till the timer runs out" scenario, you have to blow up crates of gold to take over a control point. (The point being that the attackers are invading villages and cities to loot the local gold). Its a slight, but welcome twist since you can set the charge and go and hide in a perfect vantage point to shoot down any defender to tries to disarm the bomb. Ech player can choose from a variety of pre-set soldier classes like Assault, Recon (Sniper)], Demolitions, Support (Medic), etc. All very standard stuff. Each class has its own primary weapon, secondary weapon, alt. weapon etc. Graphics are fine, nothing extraordinary Sound is very weak in this build of the game. Weapons lack punch and its quite difficult to identify the direction of surrounding firefights. There are many vehicles to commandeer, ranging from Humvees with mounted turrets, to tanks, to assault choppers. The veicles are a hoot to play, but the driving mechanic for land based vehicles is cumbersome. Now coming to the main selling point of this game, the destructible environments. DICE has been hyping its Frostbite engine claiming fully destructible objects within the game. Let me tell you, this feature works almost exactly as advertised. You can blow up walls, roofs, floors of virtually every structure on the map. This is an incredible new dimension that DICE has introduced in the realm of online gaming as now, players cannot count on cover to protect them indefintely while picking off others (blasted sniping rats). See someone running through a building towards their objective ? Switch to your rocket launcher and blast a hole through the wall, and maybe through the opponent as well. Want to get down from a building but dont want to jump off the edge ? Blow a hole in the floor and climb down. In a tank and see a bunch of opposing players huddled together behind a wall ? Blast right through them with the tank's turret. Fence blocking your path? Blow up the fence. The incredible amount of destruction that can you can wrought, just makes the whole online shooter experience so much more fun. By the end of a round, the entire map can be levelled out since mortar fire also creates craters in the ground, besides smashing up buildings. Since the beta is online only, and very few in India are party to the beta, I have had to play with foreigners over Live. Gameplay is laggy, but fun, nonetheless, and I have even managed to finish as top scorer on a couple of occasions. This is one title I will keep my eye out for. I will also keep updating my impressions as I get more play time with the beta. Cheers !!

KnackChap
how does the framerate hold up?? 30 locked?? 60?? what about tearing?? both of them were a major letdown in the trailers shown so far
MarketTantrik
how does the framerate hold up?? 30 locked?? 60??what about tearing?? both of them were a major letdown in the trailers shown so far Minor tearing so far in my limited play time. More worrying are the graphical glitches in the object destruction like the corner of a destroyed wall floating in mid air. Frame rate is rock solid even with 5 vehicles and 10+ players running around on screen. Draw distances are gigantic.

MarketTantrik
@ MT a few questions:1. How does the feature of destructible environments hold up to other games that provided the same feature (such as the Red Faction series)? Red Faction had very specific points on objects which could be destroyed. In BF:BC its pretty much LEGOland. 2. When you mean graphics are nothing extraordinary, how does it hold up to a game like CoD4? Nowhere near as immersive as CoD4, but its understandable given the massive draw distances and large number of players, vehicles, explosions, etc. going on at any point of time. 3. What's the scoring system like? Does it follow the method used in TF2 or does is it in the conventional model of other multiplayer FPS games? Its like CoD4 with a twist. 10 points for an offensive kill. 5 points for a defensive kill. 2 points for assists. plus some bonuses for special kills like headshots. You also get medals and stuff for certain achievements. 4. Does the fact that the environments are totally destructible tilt the balance towards classes with heavier firepower? How does class balance hold up keeping this in mind? Both classes start off with more or less equal firepower. But as the attackers capture more control points (gold crates), they gain the ability to call in more reinforcements.
MarketTantrik
How do the controls match up to other FPSes on the 360? This was an aspect I had noted, but wanted more play time before I posted my opinion on it. But since you've asked, its a bit floaty and not as tight as I would have liked. After being spoilt with the finely honed control dynamics of Halo 3 and CoD4, this one is a bit like you're walking around on ice. Definitely in need of tuning. MarketTantrik
Another question: Is it true EA is going to offer guns as DLC? As you know, EA has announced that it will sell additional guns for the upcoming installment in the Battlefield franchise, Bad Company. We, and tens of thousands of like-minded individuals, feel that this is nothing more than stripping out content that should already be included in the 60 dollar price tag, and selling it back to fans of the franchise for an additional premium. We also believe that this plan can and will lead to unbalanced play. We further believe that it sets a precedent for even more abusive DLC for fans of all game franchises. We have embarked on a boycott of Battlefield: Bad Company, and despite a lack of support (so far) from most major gaming outlets, have already enveloped thousands of gamers, who too are eager to stop this dangerous trend in its tracks. Suddenly my interest for this game has dropped rock-bottom. Guess they really need funds to buy Take2. Can the suits at EA kindly explain what the hell is going on? Link. CONFIRMED. Sarcastic Gamer (of Yahtzee fame) is running a boycott campaign against this game with some hilarious videos.

Pir8
I am a HUGE BFMC fan and this game was the reason I got into the X360 console in a big way. I have access to the beta and was pretty disappointed. It feels like a cheap rip off of COD4, Blacksite, the Outfit and some old garbage. Hopefully they make improvements or they will end up killing the franchise.
MarketTantrik
^^ The biggest put offs for me are the framerate and the fact that its difficult to understand when you are being hit.
