The Wolfy among us
Is there hope? Of course, the evening started out with anticipation for the fun planned (or so we thought) ahead. How it transitioned into a night filled with trepidation and fear is still a question in my head. Cabs have been a part of the life and make up of any girl in the city who wishes to live independently. In my 32 years, I have taken innumerable rides in cabs and had yet to face the nightmarish turn of events one after the other that unfolded last night. Knowing that Ola Cabs is a reputed (allegedly) service with trackers in place for worried friends and family to keep a tab and having a few friends who were well acquainted with the company; me and a friend boarded the car without any reservations at 2055 hrs from Palam Vihar to go to Delhi last night. The driver appeared a little cocky from the start and a couple of minutes into the drive we had to ask him to slow down. Water off a duck’s back! He ignored our curt instructions with a grim ease that made us jittery in the first few minutes itself. Unable to rid myself off the unease, I rang a dear friend repeatedly to get my mind off the vague sense of unsettlement. Whilst on the phone, the driver Pramod continued driving like Schumakker and went over a particularly bad bump. We immediately and roughly reminded him to drive carefully. The driver turned around and got abusive --- telling us to shut up (translated to bak bak bandh kar, bakwaas nahi chahiye. Idhar hi uttar dunga). The minute he said that we sharply and aggressively told him to stop talking the way he was and to behave himself. He continued to cuss and started ranting about not being a Bihari or Bengali but a Jaat from Udai (this is where the fun begins). However, his rant sallied forth into more vicious lettering with references to our lady parts and threats to disembowel us ( which he kindly stated he would abstain from doing since we were ‘ladis’). Here’s when my friend called her father who told us exit the cab and get to the nearest police check post. Since he heard us, his rampage on the road escalated with more grand manouvers, weaving through the dark isolated night and more threats ensued. He went on to say that “the cab is his, he is the owner, no one can touch him” (I’d like to add that it sounds way more grandiose when it’s spat out in Hindi laced heavily with a Jaat accent). He continued being obnoxious (the language was horrifying and alarming) and threatened to abandon us on the road saying that would teach us a lesson, as we would have nowhere to go. We shouted back and asked him to stop the car immediately. Upon getting off the car, he asked for money which we refused to pay with immense false bravado shaking in our pants that he wouldn’t stop the wretched vehicle and we would have to call on our minimalistic self defense skills using our three inch boots as weapons on him). He went on to say, “tera baap bhi paise dega” …. aaand more charming lingo ensued about us being ladies of the night.. We got off and he sped away. Phew! Safe for now. We were around Samalkha –Kapasera and ran into a well lit building, ‘The Grand Lotus Resort” seeking help. Meanwhile, in another part of Delhi, my friend who had remained on the phone while the drama had been unfolding (amidst curses being hurled and threats exchanged, panicked exchanges between me and my friend at our best possible action) was hurtling at lightning speed towards us. Damage control time! So here we enter the building – a small hotel which we deemed a “safe place” where we could wait while another car came to pick us up. Caught up in making calls to calm our friends and family, we relaxed and took a seat in the main foyer of the building. Pichar abhi baaki hia mere dost. The manager of the hotel walked up to us and asked us to leave (Why? Would he do that). We explained we were in trouble, that we were abandoned by our cab, and were waiting for alternate transport. The manager said “ then go to the police station, don’t wait here”. Here’s where I lose it. Entering fulI affronted chick mode with hands on BOTH hips if you please….I looked him in the eye and called him the most INDECENT man I ever met!. (Yes, would you believe my truck driver self abandoned ‘ME’ at this opportune moment). Continuing my Bollywood diva statement I effused more melodrama with references to his Ma-Behen and hopes that they would encounter similar turmoil at the late hour of 2100 hrs!. And so the police was called by him and us separately. So, here we are in Awkward land. Him wanting us to leave and us standing our ground. Staying put. Not looking at each other. Waiting and waiting. More calls follow. Some more waiting….Tapping feet….Glancing around..Now enough time has passed for us to have second thoughts. Hmmmm. The police will definitely make the situation more uncomfortable. Do we need this ? Musings over the unnecessary feelings of fear take over. Our alternate pickup arrived, but the cops did not. We left. And here’s another story brought forward by the many in a million. It’ll also get lost in content. In a country that celebrates and worships women we’ll never shed the constant watchfulness, the urge to look over our shoulder, to breathe easy in a cab, to believe that somebody/anybody will attempt to help us in a tight spot. I have no delusions of grandeur about the state of affairs or a wish to cure the miserable plight for us women. What I keep losing is hope every day. ‘Umeed pe duniya kayam hai’. But wohi umeed ab bujh rahi hai. Got this on facebook
The Wolfy among us
Typical knee-jerk reaction. Uber was just the medium by which the crime was perpetrated. tomorrow a similar incident may happen in the supreme court premises. Then what do we do? Right
^ as it turned out UBER hasn't enforced strict norms not only India but in US too. This is nightmare dealing with blue collar staff in India but things arent really rosy outside too.
The Wolfy among us
I agree Uber has to share the blame, but doesn't end there. What about all the other rapes where Uber was not involved?

What Government should do ..ask these radio cab services to keep a call center that keeps constant touch with Female passengers after 8 pm....The Company Call center can keep touch with the female passenger after every 10 mins asking if there is any problem and in the meantime have all the contact details of the nearby police station and patrol tracked through GPRS . This will help a lot i think .
Right
Uber has to come out clean that they did enough checks on Yadav and run a fresh check on others. And this should give lesson to other cab services as well.
The Wolfy among us
Better than each cab service doing this, there should a government owned network which does this. Which reports to the police. I understand that the logistics of setting this up will be huge, but it will ensure safety atleast to an extent, and also generate jobs. Also, this same network should be responsible for doing background checks.

Walker
The 32-year-old Uber cabs driver Shiv Kumar Yadav, who allegedly raped an executive on Friday night, would not have been behind the wheel of the Uber taxi had the US-based company run a background check and got police verification done as he had earlier been jailed too in a rape case.Shiv Kumar Yadav, who was arrested yesterday in his home town Mathura, is a repeat offender, it was revealed during his initial interrogation by the police. He has allegedly told the police that he had spent seven months in jail in a rape case which was filed against him in south Delhi’s Mehrauli area in 2011. http://www.financialexpress.com/article/miscellaneous/uber-cabs-driver-had-been-jailed-earlier-in-a-rape-case/16833/ wtf

It is a problem all over india and must be solved as a whole though ,you are right on that account.
