bips3421
Hi All, Does anyone have experience installing Linux on PS3 - YDL or Ubuntu ? I had tried once with Ubuntu but it did not support wireless hence un-installed + the system was very slow. Did anyone try YDL and get good performance ? I could not download so far because of the size; its 4.8 GB download!!

a5hr1th
I've had experience installing both Ubuntu and YDL, and personally I feel Ubuntu is the better distro. Go here for DIYs and step-by-step instructions: http://psubuntu.com/ The slowness is because of Sony adding a Hypervisor to the PS3, which limits the PS3 to run the OS thru just 6 of the 7 of the SPEs. The RSX has been made inaccesible for obvious reasons
bips3421
Ubuntu supports wireless only in the latest version and that also has lot of issues, this is what i read on some site! Also when i installed Ubuntu, it could not render the extra graphical mode of OS on PS3 which plays so well on my laptop!
harrydeo
In my opinion YDL is the best way to go because: 1. It was designed to work on PS3 and TV screen 2. Latest distribution YDL 6.1 support out of the box WIFI support 3. YDL has many custom stuff designed for PS3, one of which is using RSX space as swap memory (from 6.1) this gives you huge performance boost 4. YDL shipped with IBM Cell SDK to develop for PS3. I belive development is the only cause to run PS3 Linux
Aftrunner
Couple of questions to the people who have tried this or have this running right now. 1 Can you run a torrent client on it, like Azeurus or Utorrent? PS3 would make a pretty decent download machine esp as from what I hear you can leave it running without too many worries. 2 Has anyone tried any emulators on it. Esp an SNES emulator? Edit Oh this is VERY cool. http://gizmodo.com/5143547/how+to-install-...aming-emulation Looking into it now. Thanks for the link Ashrith. Great way to kill some time reading about that stuff. bips3421
I'd love to get YDL on my PS3 but issue has been the download ! Tried couple of times and the download would get stuck or time out or something like that around 2 GB. Any idea if it comes free with some IT Mag DVDs ? Aftrunner
Use a torrent. Its perfectly legal in this case. Direct downloads are insanity with the flaky connections we have.

Yes you can torrent client 2. Most of the 2D emulators work. Including NES, SNES, GameBOY. However, a kernel patch is in progress which gives access to RSX, after that you would be able to play PS1 games as well.
