Way back when Irrational Games asked fans what they wanted in the BioShock Limited Edition, one of the choices was an informative BioShock artbook. And, as we all know, it wasn't voted to be a part of the Limited Edition, because everyone thought a Big Daddy figurine was so much cooler. But that didn't sit well with the Irrational team, so they got all their goods together, compiled some information and made the BioShock artbook available free for download off of the The Cult of Rapture website. The art book, titled BioShock: Breaking the Mold, features all kinds of art and information about the game as well as a few concept ideas they had early on like making the Little Sisters be chipmunks instead of girls, no lie! The free artbook is available in low res and high res flavors and is a good "fix" that should hold you over until next Tuesday. But be warned, if you are afraid of spoilers skip Kevin Levine's foreword. Don't say we didn't warn you.

Visit this link to download the artbook. There are two versions: Low Res (15 MB) and High Res (75 MB)

So, you've downloaded the BioShock demo. You've plumbed its glorious depths, defeated its grisly baddies, and you thought to yourself, "Self," you thought, "that was easy." Well fear not, avid BioShock fans, for we have one more way to stay your undying hunger for underwater dystopia. The fine fellows at DCEmu have uncovered how to play the BioShock demo in hard mode. When you start the BioShock demo, you'll notice that the hard mode option is there, but cannot be selected. The workaround for this is actually very simple. Before you start up the demo, open up your gamer profile and edit the default game settings. Under "general," simply set your default difficulty to hard. Now start up the BioShock demo and, voilà, hard difficulty will be highlighted. Just don't move it or you won't be able to reselect it without restarting the demo.

Well, technically Avishkar is right. Irrational is no more, it got assimilated by the Borg that is called 2K Games and is now called 2K Boston. :P

And oh, I don't know how many have done so already, but the BioShock Art Book is available for free download from the Cult of Rapture site in both low and high-res PDF format.

Damn, looks like BioShock is competing with Jericho and Silent Hill when it comes to designing the nightmares that make home in Rapture.

But I have to disagree on one thing though: it definitely doesn't look anything like Prey. The weapon design is much more raw, instead of the organic design from Prey, and the environments are too different. While Prey went for the organic-alien look, BioShock has managed to completely recreate the 60s in the game in amazing detail, and as far as lighting, shadow, water and atmospheric detail is concerned, Prey doesn't hold a candle to BioShock. To be honest, I can't think of ANY game that's available right now that looks better than BioShock. And to think some lucky dogs are actually playing it right now, sets my blood boiling. Lemme go spam them some more on XBL.

Awww, nobody even sees what I write anymore. :( Heh heh, just kidding. Probably got overlooked.

In any case, there's more news. BioShock is STILL set for a Aug 21 release date. The leaks and advance of release dates have been officially debunked by 2K Games. Also, effin' pirates already have the game up for downloads. Rot in hell, sunovabitches! :(

Also, for those who have a PC that can take BioShock, the game is now available for pre-order on Steam and (who cares about this anyway) Direct2Drive. WOOHOO! Except that my X800 XT PE can't handle the game. Awww, Xbox 360 version for me.

And oh, yeah, PC demo later today, on FilePlanet, FileShack, Steam and Nvidia.

Oh don't worry, practically everyone on this planet and their mother have given it the highest ratings possible, either a 9.5/10 or a full-on 10/10. :P But that was to be expected even almost a year ago. The question THEN was that would a repeat of System Shock 2 occur, with the game not selling all too well even through the stellar reviews, but this time, unlike SS2, this one's got a lot of hype going for it, and boy, does it deliver, and THEN some....

There is art here, despite what many would say isn't possible with games, from Roger Ebert to game designers like Hideo Kojima. But it's in BioShock--it's in the gorgeously realized, watery halls of Rapture. It's in a Little Sister's expression of thanks when you choose to save her, or the utter silence if you harvest instead. It's in the way the characters develop, in the testimonials of the recording boxes you pick up along the way. It's in the way the narrative is structured, and the way it blends so seamlessly with the action. Irrational had a clear vision with this game, something pulled off with remarkable precision in every department. They didn't just deliver something that's fun to play, a criterion so often cited as the benchmark of what makes a game worthwhile. BioShock stands as a monolithic example of the convergence of entertaining gameplay and an irresistibly sinister, engrossing storyline that encompasses a host of multifaceted characters. This is an essential gaming experience.
