Impressions after playing for about 4 hours... dunno, I don't think this is my type of game.

The random exploration/item collecting/upgrading was intriguing at first, but it's getting a bit tedious now (checking every drawer, cabinet, shelf, hoping to find some goodies).

I'm on the mission past Novac (where you have to clear out the Factory full of Ghouls) and it's getting a bit annoying now. Not sure how long i'll keep playing this

Exactly the reason why I stopped playing Fallout 3 in between... Intriguing at first, but monotonous over time!!

Couple of questions guys.

1. Is it easy to jump right in to the game if I'm new to Fallout series or do I have to read a bit on the story, prologue or play previous versions first?

2. How varied are the environments? I don't prefer barren environments devoid of any interesting life throughout the game without much change in the scenery.

The story shouldnt matter. While all the games in the series use the same post apocalyptic setting the stories are of their own cannon. Worst you might miss out on is an odd reference to a faction or a character here and there. No biggie.

As far as change of scenery is concerned, well its the post apocalypse, so it looks like how you would expect a post apocalyptic city to look like. There is no jungle to snowy mountains transition here. It is atmospheric as hell though. At least Fallout 3 was.
