Both are good. Start with 3, then New Vegas.

Fallout 3:

  • Story
  • Characters
  • Atmosphere
  • Monsters

Fallout: New Vegas

  • Side quests

NV has a better story quests and writing, FO3 has a better world design.

Gameplay is pretty much the same, NV is slightly more challenging. Damn Cazadores.

I thought NV was easier than FO3 and much less action-oriented. Hardly any close space action. Except those big demon looking foes (forgot their name, the same you mentioned?)

But still, I personally found NV better because of plot, characters, choices and in the middle of the game there is this amazing sense of responsibility. There are few moments in the game where I feel that the characters are really alive. They talk to you and react like they really want to live. There is this task where you need to either convince or kill or deal however you want with the khan faction. Once you talk to their boss Papa Khan and find that he is not to easy to convince if you want a diplomatic solution. Then comes his right man, the sensible one and gives another proposition. There moment felt very realistic.

I hope they announce FO4 soon.

I always have fun with a stealth build but I also like to play as a gun-nut and being able to use almost any weapon depending on the situation. Of course high charisma also helps.

@dante, the thing about NV was that it was a lot more open and much less gated than FO3. You could wander into an area with lots of high level enemies right after the tutorial zone. There were quite a few times when I got oneshot by enemies just because I wasn't supposed to be there.

Hey.. am just starting this game on Steam. (yeah, late to the party).

It doesn't have a workshop, so is Nexus Mod Manager, a good option? Never used it with steam games.

(i will most likely only use a couple of graphic mods now and a few story mods (if and) when i replay.)

^ Best you ask Joe Cool.

He is the one to contact on such matters. But Nexus has got the best support for most Bethesda titles out there so you are on safe hands on that count. Cheerio!

Do get Project Nevada, The mod configuration menu and Bounties.

If interested, get: A world of Pain - Adds 114 new & intense locations to the wasteland filled with enemies and loot. They vary from small Gas Stations to huge maze-like sewers and derelict factories. Adds several days of new gameplay possibilities. A massive new linked Underground complex awaits filled with quests, NPCs with dialogue, vendors and some of the toughest enemies you will find.

So I am like 30 hours into this. Never got around to playing it properly before but since it works on the laptop nicely and I have been travelling a bit, I ended up getting stuck into it. And I mean really, really stuck. Its all I want to play. I am thinking about it even when I am not playing it. Last time I had a reaction like that to any game was Dark Souls.

This legitimately might be one of the finest RPGs of last gen and just an insane upgrade on Fallout 3.

To be fair, it is janky at times. The shooting never really clicks. And the engine is still weird when it comes to even basic stuff like movement. But holy f**k its a role playing game in the most honest sense of the word. I kitted my build from the start as high Charisma. Put tons of points into Science, Speech and Lockpicking and the game just plays to that style so amazingly well. I think I have talked, hacked and lockpicked my way out of like 80% of quests. The amount of alternatives to not just shooting everything on sight are staggering. Reminds me a lot of Deus Ex.

I will get around to F4 at some point. But wierdly enough, this has dulled my enthusiasm for it a lot. Having played F3 and Skyrim, I dont think Bethesda can do the kind of quest design that Obisidian did. And I dont think I can go back to the shoot, loot and scramble loop again. It would feel so downgraded.
