I'd rather have someone try and fail at an interesting concept (Alpha protocol) rather than someone churn out a soulless mind numbing dull game that looks great (Doom 3).

Edit @shadowprince I think you might be in the minority with that one buddy. :P

q4 was a raven game. people love to diss id but they forget that the studio has put out 2 games in the last 10 years, doom 3 which divides opinions and quake 3 which is the gold standard for deathmatch to this day.

id sticks to oldschool gameplay by choice. complaining about it is akin to complaining that serious sam or painkiller were too old fashioned. that's the point of the games.

"Divides opinion". Thats just a nice way of saying that its an average game. I could say the same about AP. And Dooms problem wasnt that it was old school. It was simply not very good. Old school, new school doesnt really matter.

So pretty much the only good game that Id have made was released 11 years ago. Some record. O_o

it actually does divide opinion. i thought d3 did what it was supposed to pretty well and roe was good fun too... it was a corridor shooter with closet monsters, simple. god knows what people were expecting it to be, but with id, expectations are always sky high. the earlier doom and quake games weren't all that different to d3, it's just that the genre had moved since their last single player offering and they chose (perhaps unfortunately) to stick to the old school type of gameplay. apart from that, the tech was very advanced, it looked great and was surprisingly playable at shitty framerates too (something i distinctly remember about the game since i played it with my fps in the teens at best).

and you compare id to obsidian, the studio that put out buggy piece of sh*t alpha protolol and then dropped support even before the first patch. what's that? blame the publisher? yea sure. the publisher stopped funding for the patch. the publisher rushed them to release the game. just like the publisher of kotor 2 rushed them to release that game as well right? never blame the studio, always blame the publishers. the fact is, obsidian is a studio of people with impressive resumes and that's about it. they specialize in doing sequels and expansions because that's all they have the capability to do. and more often than not, they end up f**king even that. their only good game to date is motb, the rest were all sh*t. when i heard for the first time that obsidian was making new vegas, i was genuinely excited that we would finally get to see van buuren as it was supposed to be. now i can't help thinking that this is going to be another buggy pos and the only parts of the game that will work are those copied directly from fallout 3.

when i think about it, the only reason i'd get this game is because bethesda is pretty decent about letting modders fix problems in their games.

Obsidian is full of talented guys, they always think differently & always come up with interesting concepts which DOES makes it into their game.

Lack of polishing & fine tuning the game is pretty much the only complain their games get, this just goes on to show that their overall concept & RPG mechanic in games are rock solid.....give them a budget/support and see how they blast past a lot of other devs.

KotoR 2 was great (nitpicking about the ending aside) as was NWN 2 (which incidentally had great after release support with a lot of patches and fixes). And Doom 3 was utterly horribly boring. I guess thats what you call dividing opinion, isnt it?

BTW thats 2 more good games than id released in the last 10 years.

kotor 2 was a pale shadow of the original game by bioware. and complaints about the ending aren't nitpicking... they rushed it like no other game in history. it was hopeless beyond all belief, it's just that obsidian walked away from the fiasco looking good because everyone chose to blame lucasarts.

and the nwn 2 oc was complete sh*t, not even mentioning the hopeless performance and game breaking bugs (a standard feature of all obsidian offerings). to be fair, so was the nwn oc for that matter, but it made up for it with an incredible modding community that keep fabulous custom servers and content running to this day. nwn 2 had none of that. motb was their one good expansion, and with storm of zehir they were back to making crap.

and the less said about alpha protolol, the better.

so yea, let's compare a studio like id which has made 2 games in 10 years, one of which is the greatest deathmatch game of all time (along with one of the greatest and most popular engines of all time,) developed completely inhouse with obsidian, the studio that real developers outsource their expansions and sequels to because they want to do actual game development, and which has a record of putting out 1 good expansion and 4 shitty games in it's history.

I'm going with the PC version this time. I still haven't finished FO3 on the 360 but twice on the PC.

Playing the DLCs on the PC now. Loved Point Lookout - great atmosphere and fantastic loot. The Pitt was a little disappointing (I was expecting a larger area to explore) but still decent in its own right. Still need to play the others though.

And I had almost forgotten how delightfully creepy the Dunwich building in FO3 was! Especially with all the Lovecraftian references. Exploring it at around 1:00 AM at night made me feel uneasy (in a good way of course).

Yeah I am getting the PC version as well, achievements or not. Its not the prettiest game around so it needs all the advantages it can get.

Plus I played the PS3 version of F3 at a friends place and even though its kind of an FPS the controls/UI just feels right with the M&K. For some reason it fells weird with a gamepad.

Yeah hope it releases here , don't wanna import again from UK. :(

wouldn't it be better/cheaper/faster to buy it off steam? i'm leaning towards picking it up during their christmas sale when it should hopefully be discounted.

Uh oh. You walked right into that one Milo. That was a set up. Follow up reply will be on the lines of "Obsidian game lol. So buggy, no one bought it, massive failure, discounted after a month". I see right through you spinny. Cant fool me.

I highly doubt they'd discount a game less than a month after release.

it's possible... the steam sale will come 9 weeks after this releases. i've seen games go on sale through normal weekend deals before that. for example, i bought street fighter 4 for 50% off 2 months after it released. likewise, dirt 2 was 50% off on a weekend deal 6 weeks after it's release. the discount for new vegas during the christmas sale might not be drastic, but i highly doubt that it's price will remain completely untouched.

also.... obsidian game, buggy mess, poorly optimized blah blah.
