AtheK
Here a really good read. History of Geekdom No so long ago, the computer geek (origin: Dorkus IBM-us) was confined to the back rooms and basements of companies everywhere. White dress shirts (sleeves optional), thin black ties and horn-rimmed glasses were standard issue. Mainstream social acceptance? Not so much. Over each succeeding decade, however, geeks have crept out of their shells, changed their look and gained more acceptance in business and in society. The results of which can be seen today: Geeks and their much-loved tech have thoroughly invaded the mainstream. Let's take a tour through the ages, shall we? Bird Bird Bird
From the comments section: I think there is a misrepresentation of what you consider a "geek"...or what some mainstream people consider a “geek”. Just because you use smartphones and computers doesn’t make you a geek. If you used a telephone or a TV when it became mainstream does it make you a telecom expert? And if you drove a car does that make you like Henry Ford? Computers may have become consumer and mainstream business devices but that doesn’t give the “badge of honor” to people who text their friends. Grandmas who receive pictures of their grandchildren via email are geeks too?? Keep dreaming. When geeks were dorks… the public avoids classification with them. When they are “publically” rich, the public wants to be part of them. The truth is that despite Hollywood’s (American) pop-culture manipulations, geeks always made more money on average and many were millionaires. Even the “geeks” that started the industrial revolution changed society and made a lot of money without a computer. LOL. Any half-idiot bum can use Facebook…that’s why it became popular. If being a geek with “the badge of honor” includes someone like that…this world would have been in the dark ages forever. I’m sorry, but you have to do more than get a job that requires a phone to be a geek. Wannabe! Cant agree more.. Technology has been simplified a lot for "non-geeks" to work with.. and that is why "so-called geeks" made it mainstream.. The Badge of Honour has lost its value..
