Shantz
Very cool Well, a friend of mine would be REALLY INTERESTED in this. He always wanted a means to play .mkv on his 52" Sony No he ain't got no PS3 yet but was gonna get it on my advice, but now am thinking of recommending this to him It's hasslefree. No need to keep the computer running One thing, if you want to stream mkv's. My router is a bit under-powered to transcode mkvs to something PS3 can play on the fly since PS3 cannot play mkv. So, it'd better for you to go for a proper NAS (Synology has some good options)

He wasn't in that much of a hurry right now, so we got plenty of time to do our research Edit: By the way guys, I just checked out the Wii homebrew scene, and the Wii USB Loader is having some problem wtih WD Passport HDDs...something about HDD spindown thing I am at work right now and will look into this later, but if that is the case, I'll have no option but to get the Seagate FreeAgent Go. What to do I don't know about the particular issue you are talking about but HDD spindown is basically to stop the HDD from spinning (or making it go into low power mode) when it is not being used. Most modern drives do it on their own, but the host machine with which they are connected can mess this up. I'm sure if this is homebrew that is causing the issue then it should be simple enough to solve it. I also wrote some small scripts/programs to do the same with my hard disc with my router but unfortunately they work only on linux.
lastAvenger
Its a f**king bitch transcoding MKV's on the fly over WiFI because the PS3 doesn't support Wireless N, imagine streaming 1080p stuff which has an average bit-rate of 7mbit over a 54mbps WiFi sitting in another room :/ One can also enable Ad-Hoc mode and make the PS3 connect to the laptop and stream stuff right next to it but then you might as well use the Ethernet Over all, i haven't had a very good experience with streaming HD stuff but there are a lot of factors then. I would love to get one of those WD TV but sadly in Bangalore, I don't have a PC, so everything sits on the laptop and i just connect an HDMI-DVI cable to the tv and watch. KG : See if you can get WD-TV from US, its just 110$ there i think. Edit - Shantz : It might work since homebrew on Wii is using GeckOS a kind of linux distro i think, it could also be that Wii is not giving enough power to the USB ? but i doubt about this. KG : Just buy FlatMii and connect the laptop or comp to it directly
Spacescreamer
all the reports of Seagate crashing has been coming for the regular HDD.. and not the portables. I havent heard of any of the Free Agents conking off till now. Recently ordered a 320Gigger for myself and only thing my frnd warned me was regarding the fact that there are better options available in terms of the scratch resistant body (Transcend) WD portable is a scratch prone gadget and i have seen the thing in my own hands. The darn things gets so badly scratched that u stop caring abt it after a certain point of time.. i havent got my freeagent hdd and i been told it aint scratch resistant either, but after looking at WD.. i thot better go in for a 5 year warranty hdd.. scratch or no scratch.. nothing can be more hopeless than that WD surface. Atleast i know i payed for something i liked in looks.

I'll inform him of this and leave the decision-making to him About the FlatMii, it needs a computer running all the time, and since I already have a Wiikey modchip and my Wii is homebrew enabled, I don't really see any need for FlatMii when USB Loader can do the same thing without the need for a computer It is a little buggy right now (although the ultimate version is pretty darn good), am sure it'll get improved upon and will be just as awesome as the HDLoader for PS2 is spacescreamer dude....thanx for the post. I am now seriously thinking of getting the FA Go. Always wanted that blue colored one Which color did you get ? and how much did it cost you ? Spacescreamer
Black, 4100/- ordered before the prices soared. I had intended to get a silver one.. but the distri had got the silver one all sold out, and new lot only had the black one. I had seen the Free Agent in my hands and was impressed rite away. Body aint like WD, and i mean in terms of scratch prone. I wd have waited for the silver to arrive but requirement being urgent, cudnt have waited any longer. else silver looked mesmerizing to me. And yea, the portable has 5 yrs warranty.

Yeah...I was gonna post the same Edit: On Ebay, the lowest price am getting is 6,750/- and after applying the 10% coupon, it comes down to 6250/-, and this is for the 500 GB one
Spacescreamer
the price wd have been like 4k if i had got it abt a month back.. Nehru place.. And yea.. Mine is 320GB.. not 500 GB but i guess the person i got it from prolly didn had the knowledge or maybe was kind enuf to offer me the old pricing of 4100 which was a marginal increase. after abt 2-3 days after i ordered, he told me the price is soon gonna be smwhere near 4550/- or something, so i was kinda happy to have saved some money. Still feel a wee bit off cuz missed out on silver.. i dont know the exact new pricing, cuz i didn confirmed it, but If Anybody wants, i can still ask for the pricing. I will check out the prices here at Lamington Road and then will go ahead with the purchase But am definitely gonna get the blue one Am ready to wait even more if need be for the Blue one So far, I've just seen it on pictures. Will see how it looks when I get my hands on one and will also check out other colors, like the silver one you mentioned
Spacescreamer
Well, i like sober colors more.. so Titanium Silver as its officially called.. appealed to me straightaway. Best of Luck for your purchase mate. i just confirmed the rates.. kinda persuaded him by reminding him that i am an old customer here are the pricing i got: FreeAgent: 500GB: 6400/- 320GB: 4100/- I am not sure of the color availability.. didn asked regarding that. And cheaper option wd be Trancend (2yr Warranty) / Verbatim (3yr Warranty) 500GB: Rs 5950/- KG : See if you can get WD-TV from US, its just 110$ there i think. I wd say DONT Reason: Few ppl who have ordered the WD thingie got dead remotes on arrival here in India. Now they thank their stars that the warranty was there for them, cuz WD TV has got absolutely NO buttons on it. Now that being the case.. its a useless chunk w/o a remote. Indian Price wd be abt 7k-ish.. and after so many cases of PS3 remote not being entertained by Sony stores bought from even e bay.. i think it wont be a wise decision. Go for a US sourced WDTV if u have any constant flux of ppl from the US, both ways ofcource Just my 2 cents.
