Beyond Good & Evil HD coming to PS3 in May

Today Ubisoft announced that the PlayStation 3 version of Beyond Good & Evil HD will come in May, via the PlayStation Blog. Though associate producer Eric Damian-Vernet didn't disclose a more specific release date, he did mention that Jade and Pey’j avatars will be available for players who pick up the game in its first two weeks on PSN.

The game enjoyed a brief stint as an Xbox Live Arcade timed exclusive, thanks to its part in the House Party promotion. BG&E is a mere $10 on XBLA, so we expect the same price when it hits the PlayStation Network.

Beyond Good & Evil enjoyed a positive critical reception at launch, but didn't manage to catch healthy sales. Ubisoft teased Beyond Good & Evil 2 with a trailer, but has been eerily quiet ever since. The company assured fans that it was still in development recently, but they may be watching downloadable BG&E HD sales carefully to gauge interest in a sequel.

buy this game bitches.

What c**ts. If you wanna make the bloody sequel, do it already. Don't hold a gun to our heads and make us buy a game we already own.

game is better than half the junk you play anyway, so buy it already :P

+1. they getting so much support from fans also.....phir bhi sale kamine...paisa do toh nachenga...nahi toh nachayenga . <_<

dude, having all the fans in the world means absolutely nothing if no one actually buys the game. and that's what happened with the first game... it tanked in sales. you can't blame them for gauging interest in a sequel through this hd release. why should they bother putting money into a sequel for a game no one bought in the first place? besides, this is not like an ultimatum given to gamers... we already know they thought highly enough of the first game to start work on a sequel which may still be ongoing. this could provide more incentive or resources to that project for all we know.

even i own the original on ps2...having fans and others supports does matter a lot....so many forums ,media, gaming websites supporting Beyond good and evil 2 .....people showed lot of excitement when trailer of 2 came out ...should be enough for them to start working on it...also beyond good and evil has huge potential ....may be it did not catch everyone's eye with first title...but sequel could......ubisoft can invest on so many other games......why not give beyond good and evil a another chance....even when they are getting support...also one more thing to point out....at those times i believe beyond good and evil had become quite hard to find it in stores...even in abroad...use to look on website when it become cult classis kinda thing.......ask my relative also for it...but they said could not find it.... it became something like ICO...everyone could talk abt it...but still find it hard to get it....this i dont know if everyone faced it or not but i did searched quite a lot for it and just sometime back got it.

i'm trying to imagine a ubisoft meeting and it goes something like this...

employee : hey boss, do you remember that game beyond good & evil?

boss : you mean the game that came out in the last generation? the one that no one bought and we lost money on?

employee : yes

boss : what about it?

employee : i think we should make sequel?

boss : and why should we do that?

employee : because i've been reading forums and media and gaming websites and it seems the game has lots of fans.

boss : so why didn't all those fans buy the game?

employee : <silence>

boss : so why should we make the sequel then?

employee : we invest money in other games right?

boss : yes

employee : so why not invest money in this too?

boss (response 1) : /facepalm

boss (response 2) : your logic is incredible, 20 million dollar budget greenlit, go make bg&e2

which response do you think is more likely? that's the answer to your argument.

on a more serious note, how many times have we seen this happen... an awesome game releases, everyone seems to love but it never sells well enough or something goes wrong and we never get a sequel. i can't name all the games i would have loved to see a sequel for but they never made it. stuff like grim fandango, freespace 2, psychonauts, freelancer... or games that took off but had to be shut down like tribes or earth and beyond... or stuff that just never released, like perhaps the van buuren project or starcraft ghost. even recent games like singularity or enslaved were great fun to play but their fates were sealed by their miserable sales and we'll never get to experience these worlds again. in all these cases, there was basically nothing we could do to change the fate of these games. we're presented with kind of a unique opportunity here with bg&e.

we already know that the sequel is in development. or at least it started. maybe it's continuing just fine. maybe it's in development limbo. maybe it will be completely unaffected one way or the other by the sales of this hd release, we just don't know. so you bought a copy for the ps2 or pc back in 2004. congrats, you've done your bit already. but maybe, just maybe... if this hd release is a hit, ubisoft will actually start to take notice that the game is actually popular, with people actually willing to spend money on it (unlike the first time). no one is forcing you to buy it, but maybe your 10$ will be counted. if that's too much, share it with 5 other people and pay 2$. i'm sure they would prefer 5 sales of 10$ but if they can't get that, they'll be happy with 1 sale of 10$ for 5 people. if you think you shouldn't have to or need to buy it, out of principle, that's fine too. but then to say that ubisoft should not place emphasis on how much money they can actually earn and instead lay down millions of dollars because of forums? man if gaming companies started listening to forums the whole industry would go to sh*t. ubisoft is a business not a philanthropic organization. if no one bought your game 6 years ago and then no one buys your game again today, how willing would you be to throw in even more money on a sequel that no one might buy?

This HD release is not to guage interest. The 2008 tease trailer was to gauge interest. The interest was overwhelmingly positive, and because they failed to deliver on it, they're releasing this HD remaster to somewhat quell those demands.

And don't kid yourself. Ubi already knows whether or not they're going to make BGE2. They have focus groups and stuff to help them make these decisions, not the sales figures of a downloadable remake of a game they first released in 2003, and behind which they've put minimal marketing expense.

i don't know man, you're making quite a few assumptions there. the hd release is because they failed to deliver on expectations from the bg&e2 teaser? and they're trying to satiate that demand? how do we know any of that? maybe it's just a straight up money grab.

as for the sales of this remake not being a deciding factor, sure, i'm definitely willing to accept that. but to say that it won't have any effect at all? the feedback you get from sales is at least as good as the result of a focus group. especially since sales stats are coming directly from the people you are going to make the product for, not some scientifically chosen focus group. it might not change the way the winds blow, but i'm sure they will at least sit up and take notice if this turns out to be a monster hit on psn/xbl or vice versa. in terms of feedback when it comes to popularity of the game, it's at least as good as 'what people in forums say'.

Ubi knows no one bought the game when it was new in 2003. So they're going to decide whether or not to make a sequel by releasing the same commercial flop with a facelift 8 years later? That's supposed to give them an indication of whether or not people will buy BGE2?

indication, yes. deciding factor, no. i thought i was pretty clear on this.

besides, tell me how it hurts the cause of getting a sequel if the downloadable game actually sells well? it can only help. that's why i'd like to see it succeed with this hd thing. that and the fact that it's a f**king fantastic game that more people should play.

Sure, it will encourage them to go ahead with the sequel if the remake does well, but if they're going to decide against the sequel because the HD remake doesn't sell, then they can go f**k themselves.

let's not find out if that's what would happen eh? :P

i agree though, only ubisoft would make games like this. they catch a lot of flak in general but they are the only 'big publisher' who would dare to make... unusual... games on a regular basis. strangely enough, pc exclusives like anno, settlers, silent hunter etc. also fall into that category of 'unusual' games :|

I think you made it sound like the sequel hinged on the remake's success (buy if you want a sequel, etc.), whereas now you've toned it down to 'helping' the cause :D

i'm not making it sound like anything. the article mentioned that this might be used as a barometer to gauge interest. i happen to agree. i also know that multimillion dollar investments are probably made on the basis of other things, but this can't be ignored either.

don't you have some game to review and give a 7/10? shoo...
