Recommended connection speed to play most games online?

Hi guys,

I have a Airtel 512 Kbps unlimited connection at home. Would be good enough to play most of multiplayer PS3 games online?

Anyone with the same kind of connection is facing any lag? Also would it be possible to play with people from different geographies, like US? Would there be any lag in that?

Thanks in advance.

again.... more than that, it all depends on the ping that yu are getting with yur ISP.... sometimes ppl with 256kbps dont lag and ppl with 2mbps suffer horrendous lag... and its all because of the mighty ping!

check speedtest.net to see how much ping yu are getting on a mumbai server!

The ping time is 100-150ms. Is that good enough?

But ping time to servers is US might be huge...What about that?

that ping yu are getting from which location... i mean which city yu are in??

and ping times to US will obviously be higher coz lets face it, the distance... and moreover, its india!

a mumbai reference would atleast reveal how decent yur connection could be!

hey there mate, connection speed to play online games is irrelevant cuz games only transfer very small data at a given moment so it does not matter if you have a 8MBPS speed connection or a dial up modem connection, in fact sometimes dial ups are better than broadbands!!

the thing that matters is latency which depends maily on two factors, first, which you can never control is the physical distance between you and the host or the place you are playing at and second your ISP's routing which i must say is pathetic in India, at least for me using MTNL :P

So, dont worry about your speed, i have a 2MBPS connection and my m8 has got a 64 KBPS connection and our ping times are always same.

So, is my ping time good or not? What's yours and what is your experience online?

ping 85.234.149.215 -t

check the time you are getting on this server and let me know, i am getting 340 ms :P

EDIT: i am using MTNL 2MBPS speed connection for 2 years now, i am from delhi and playing call of duty 4 i got best ping to a Bombay server of 40ms and to UK servers of avg.200 ms which is not great but good enough for me, sometimes when MTNL decides to go crazy like right now my PING goes from 190ms to 350ms, this is called poor routing, routing means the route which ISP takes to travel to the destination, iv played on some Pakistan servers where i should have got a PING of less than 80 but i got a ping of 300...because it was routed via Dubai to Pakistan :nono:

Ask me anything you like,,il try to reply if i know the answer

DarkKnight--so this is a proof for you that speed does not have any impact on PING, since both of you have lower speeds than me( i have 2MBPS) but you still have low PING than me, i am getting avg of 320 atm :eyebrow:

Some other server to try out, post your result on this too please :chair:

217.146.84.218 avg tine for me 190 ms

217.146.84.87 avg time for me 210 ms

Routing in India is very bad and Airtel is among the better of the lot.
