That's an understatement. It looks like a launch title for the PS2.

Looks OK to me. You guys are spoiled with your Gears of war 2 and your MGS4. Or maybe I have been playing Operation flashpoint for the last two days and right now anything looks good.

But really if its just Fable 1 in HD with a wide open map I would be more than happy. And the music sounds spot on. Looks like they are going to retain a lot of the charm of the original.

Preview: Fable 2

The long wait for a hero is almost over.

What's the game about? By now you've no doubt heard about Peter Molyneux's ambitious role-playing game sequel (he's been talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking about it for the past few years, so how could you have not?). There's been so much said and shown about the game's many features and innovations over the years that it's easy to forget that Fable 2 is, in fact, a real game that you will actually be playing this year.

What's new for E3? "Fable 2 is finished," Molyneux announced at Microsoft's E3 press conference. Considering the legendary designer's habit of obsessing over gameplay innovations, often at the expense of release dates, this was the news that some thought they'd never hear. But it also meant that the game was fully playable in Microsoft's game lounge, giving us an opportunity to get our hands on the "final" product -- not just see yet another demonstration of its myriad features.

What's our take? Of course, playing Fable 2 at E3, it was hard to get a real sense of whether all of the ideas and innovations that Molyneux and the rest of Lionhead included in the game have resulted in the epic experience they've promised, but I'm now so much closer to believing. The combat system appears to be a big success -- it's very much like promised, with simple-to-execute attacks, lots of combos (including combos between melee and magic attacks), and easy parries. The best part is how varied and rewarding the combat feels; the sword fighting or shooting feels more like your average action game than and RPG. It's also neat to see how the experience you gain varies based on your performance in battle, not just the number of enemies you fight. Also cool is how, when you die, you don't have to replay anything -- you simply reawaken in the battle sans any of the experience you would have earned.

I also got a chance to experience some of the relationships in the game while interacting with some of the townsfolk. I flirted with a girl, and had I done so for a while longer she likely would have been willing to get married (getting hitched is one of the main aspects of Fable 2 -- and yes, if you were wondering, the game supports same-sex marriage -- though you need to make sure it's for the right reasons, as divorce results in you losing half of your loot). At one point a bard came to join my quest -- he sings songs based on how you play the game (for example, whether you win or lose battles or whether you succeed or fail in relationships). I also got to play around with the relationship between my dog and me. Of course, there were the simple things like playing fetch with him or seeing him scout, but what was most interesting was seeing him get hurt in battle. I had the ability to heal him -- but if I didn't, he would limp behind me, ultimately losing pace and falling far behind (what's interesting is that, like any good dog, he'll always make his way to you -- even if it's hours, or days, later).

But the best part of playing Fable 2 was just seeing how polished it felt. The voice acting, the story, the visuals -- they're all extremely well done. In an event with so many games all vying for attention, Fable 2 stood out in my mind as something really special. Exactly how special remains to be seen -- the proof will be in the long-term play once it's released -- but what I played these past few days has me quite excited.

Chatting with Peter Molyneux during the show, he tells of how, working late one night at Lionhead, he came across game composer Russell Shaw with tears in his eyes. Worried, he went over and asked Shaw what was wrong. Shaw, who has worked with Peter for the past 15 years, had just finished playing through Fable 2 and told Peter that it was the most incredible game he'd ever played.

Peter's a great storyteller. He's often criticized for all of the hype he speaks and his inability to deliver on it. This is one of those cases, though, where it really may be justified.

Molyneux: Three more Fable games planned :)

fablepossibleh3.jpg

In Gametrailers.com's latest interview with Fable 2 head master Peter Molyneux, we used our ninja-ears (yes, ninja-terming body parts is allowed under the ninja-naming rulebook) and actually picked up on a Fable franchise fact. At around the 5:10 mark (video after the break), Molyneux talks about his intent for the Fable franchise going forward saying that "we got plans for Fable three, four and five" and that "it's actually a big story arc." With the average turnaround time to develop a Fable game being around the eight year mark, our kids' kids will be playing Fable games for decades to come.

Fable II Definitively Dated

fableIIcollectors.jpg

At Microsoft's E3 2008 press conference Peter Molyneux announced that Fable II would be released in October, but when in October? It's a pretty big month after all - one of the biggest in fact. Well now Microsoft has announced that the game will be in U.S. stores on October 21st, with folks over in Europe and the UK getting the title on the 24th. That gives us plenty of time to schedule time off, stock up on dog treats, and then return them to the store upon realizing we just bought treats for a virtual dog.

Along with the news comes a lovely shot of the full collector's edition, which we already talked about back in July but looks much better all spread out. It's just Microsoft's way of reminding you that you don't have to only spend $59.99 if you don't want to.

WTF??? Releasing in the same month as Fallout 3. This is ridiculous - I don't have that kind of time for two deep immersive games. And then get ready for GeoW 2?

Diwali is going to be sweet.

Fable 2 coming on October 21st, CE items detailed

Put aside the speculation and wonder no more! Microsoft has now confirmed that Fable 2 is being released on October 21st .

On top of the release date announcement, Big M has confirmed the details on the previously displayed Collector's Edition for the game. In addition to the game, Making Of DVD, Fate Cards, you'll get access to exclusive in-game content. For the $79.99 package, you get a brand new dungeon called "The Hall of the Dead", a Legendary Cutlass named "The Wreckager", and an Otherworldly bonus. Which is good, apparently.

The extra content requires that you have a Live account, so if you're one of the three people still remaining in the world that doesn't have one, and you're getting the Fable 2 CE, now's the time to sign up.

Master Chief crash lands into Fable 2

If you noticed in the details to Fable 2's Collector's Edition, there was an "Otherworldly Bonus" for in-game content. Packaged with the announcement were screenshots, including one conspicuously labeled "Fable2_MasterChief.jpg." Yep, that's not just a coincidence, you're looking at a faux-medieval variant of the Halo superstar. (Halo 3 ending spoiler alert) I guess we know what universe he crash-landed in.

And here we thought Minstrel Chief was the only Halo reference we'd find. Fable 2 is coming October 21 for US and October 24 for Europe.

How to transfer your pub game winnings in Fable II

For those of you keeping track on Lionhead's epic RPG Fable II and are looking to get your gauntlets on tomorrow's pub games, yet wonder how that hard gambled gold will be carried over to the retail game, Eurogamer has us covered.

When you start either of the games Fortune's Tower, Keystone or Spinnerbox you will choose a gambler that will be your representative throughout the challenges. Gamble to your hearts content until you pick up your copy on October 21st (the 24th in Europe).

Once in the retail copy of the game and you've created your character, you must then find a Gamesmaster. Choose the game he or she is offering and you'll then have the option of merging your character with your XBLA counterpart where you'll have access to your winnings. Be forewarned though, this cannot be undone.

If you later choose to play the pub games seperate from Fable II and return to Xbox Live Arcade, your retail character will now be the primary gambler and all winnings will then be accessable when you decide to continue questing. Sounds simple? Hit this link for more details, and good luck.
