Okay guys, dropped the whole idea of getting the Iphone. It's gonna be too much of a hassle for him. I want one which he can just go to a store and buy one :giggle: So now thinking of getting the Sony Ericsson phones. My budget is not more than $200 dollars. Please suggest me an awesome phone.

Hi guys,

 

My good friend's brother is coming down from the US on June 18th, and I was thinking of telling him to get me something from the US, may be an electronic item, etc., and I am thinking of getting the Iphone :wOOtjumpy: Can you guys tell me how much it's gonna cost in the US ? Is there any way he can evade custom duties on that thing ?

 

Also, I read about the new Iphone, and it would be great if I could get it :D, but there is some confusion regarding it's release date. Here at GI some guys were saying it's gonna release in a week or 2 and some say it's gonna happen in September. Any info on that ? Also, is the new Iphone or the ones that are currently existant work on Indian GSM network ? I know there is something called "Jail Breaking" but haven't done much research about it. Just got off the phone with that friend and decided to go ahead with the Iphone :egyptian:

 

Anyways, any advice in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest u go for iphone 3G, coz its not sure whn d nw 1z gona release, many ppl say its gona come out in two weeks since Palm pre is coming ! But thr is no official word from Apple abt it , they only have news regarding their OS 3.0, coz f which some say tht iphone 3G wid its current specs cant support 3.0, but then y hasnt apple said nethng abt it ?

 

As of now go for 3G, use it n then sell , but new Iphone later, coz whn its new, prices will be very high n also consider the reviews !

 

Also an advice, always go for original stuff, don think abt jail breaking or cracked iphones !

Dude...to tell you the truth, I don't even know what jail breaking actually means :P I thought it was a way to make the American one work on any GSM network, although am not sure about it. As I said, the idea just popped in my head. Haven't done any research about it yet :good: I don't even know what all features it got :P

 

Hmm....so it would be better if I get the 3G one now. How much do you think it's gonna cost in the US ?

See, the latest iPhone revision, the iPhone 3G is already out. It is even available here in India (32-38K officially). As for evading custom duties, it shouldn't be hard. Official prices vary you should check out the Apple site.

 

You will need to unlock it and its a fairly easy process.

 

To learn the whole thing and to answer your questions, just google "iPhone unlock jailbreak" or visit modmyi.com

If you buy officially unlocked pieces which I hear go close to $1000, you don't need to worry about unlocking but if you want to install unofficial 3rd party applications, you will still need to jailbreak.

 

You should also look in the American eBay. Your friend's brother can probably get something from there..

You need to pay $100 to remove the lock, so you can use it on any carrier. It's safer to shell extra 100 and get rid of this issue rather than jailbreak it and turn your phone into a brick. remember apple does nothing about jail broken iphones. no comensation, no servicing nothing. So don't do it unles you have someone who has done it in the past around.

Okay...this is really weird. I go to Apple's website to check out the prices, and the damn thing wants me to purchase/make a new AT&T connection and needs my address and social security number. I also googled for the prices and couldn't find any good site to check out the prices. I mean seriously....how hard is it to list the price :ranting:

Its 199 USD on contract. 599 USD without contract but still locked to At&T. Ask your friend to get an Iphone on contract, i.e 199$ and then unlock it by someone who can do it, and then get it here. Though your friend should have some SSN to be able to procure one there through AT n T

sh*t...now this can be troublesome :ranting:

 

Also, when you say "then unlock it by someone who can do it, and then get it here." Is that necessary ? Can't it be unlocked here in India ? I wanna make this as hassles-free for him as possible.

U can, actually I am unaware of the unlocking process, though I heard that since u tinker with the phone's baseband, something can go wrong if u dont do it right and u can brick your phone.

 

In case of jailbreak, its a simple 5 min process, that doesnt mess with the baseband etc. Google yellowsnow. AFAIk thats the only existing method for the 3G unlock.

Anyways, seeing all this Social Security requirement, etc., I think it's gonna be too much of a hassle for him to do it for "his brother's friend." Initially I thought it was gonna be as easy as walking into a store and buying the damn thing, but seeing as it won't be possible, am thinking of dropping the whole idea of getting the Iphone :(

 

May be I should look into Sony Ericsson phones :P Got any suggestion guys on which Sony Ericsson phone I should get ? My budget is not more than $200 dollars. :ranting: Also, they will work on Indian GSM Networks right ? Hopefully, I won't have to jailbreak any of them :doh:

You will need to get an unlocked iPhone which will cost 600$ i think. There shouldn't be any customs problem since its such a small item, he can easily get through showing it as his cellphone. iPhones are GSM only as of now and they all work fine on Indian networks. Using my second iPhone, this time on Airtel but I've tried it on IDEA,Vodafone etc so shouldn't be a problem. Its kinda difficult to say when the new iphone will be released. At times they announce and after a week it is released, sometimes it is simultaneous and sometimes even after a month also one can't say if they will immediately sell an unlocked iPhone 3rd Generation, it took so many months that gradually Apple started selling unlocked iPhone's. The thing is, they get 30-40% of fee from AT&T every month that your bill is generated hence its under contract. I really doubt if you can evade the contract [ Need to buy only through CC, provide Social Secuity No, if u don't have pay 500$ which is refundable after year] plus even if u gets an iPhone under contract, there is the problem of unlocking it, iPhone 3G's can be unlocked as of now but upgrading to the new OS 3.0 [ which adds all functions pretty much and completes the phone ], currently the iPhone hacking team [ also known as Dev-Team ] is yet to release an unlock. Also it took them a good 5-6 months to come up with an unlock, God knows how much time it will take them to come out with the unlock of newer iPhones.

 

Its highly advisable to wait for the new iPhone, the specs are looking great also I will suggest to wait before picking a new iPod [ of any kind ] apparently new iPod nano's will be coming with bigger screens and camera too from what can be seen from the leaked Pic. Also wait for Palm Pre to come out.

 

If you really want an iPhone, pick one from India. Warranty is a bitch btw [ if you get it from outside]. If your iPhone breaks down, they will not replace/repair it [ Please read the warranty document], in their db they already know where the iPhone belongs to since its locked with networks around the world.

 

Jailbreak allows you to run homebrew stuff, you can grab ringtones, themes, wallpapers, applications etc and yes! i will be honest, you can run cracked apps/games too but it sucks because these can't be upgraded unless you re-download them and re-sync them.

 

What to get from US ? I dunno tbh :P

Lol, jailbreak is a purely software tweak that allows u to install applications which were rejected by apple due to policy infringement, otherwise are pretty darn good. Term is related to Iphone/ipod touch only. U can always restore it back to original condition

 

As long as the Sony phone is a triband GSM phone, it'll work here

^Btw, Since the phone launched In august last year,by this august Airtel will have to officially unlock the phones they have sold in august last year. I hope they are aware of how to do that. THough m pretty sure we will have a lot of running to do ;).My unlock date will be in December

 

edit: How will they unlock legally? Some unlock code? Boy m highly skeptic if these people in the airtel stores will even learn how to do it

Apple Support is awesome :good:

Our calls are routed to Australia or Singapore i think, I was blown by their Tech Support. Brilliant stuff!

 

Indian Tech support sucks and need to learn from Apple ;)
