Halo: Reach

Ok so maybe the Beta MM thread isnt a good place to write this so I figure I will rant here.

Like :

The pistol and the AR. Both have been retooled. Both are excellent now. The covenant needle rifle is also good, it has a automatic fire too incase you wanna spam it.

Netcode and MM. Even with 2-3k people playing MM is pretty fast. And the new netcode is really, really good. I am yet to have a bad laggy game.

AAs. All of them are fun to use once you start getting a handle on things.

Covie slayer. Best new game type in Halo reach. I really wish this had been done earlier.

Jumping. No more moon gravity so its fine by me.

Dislike :

DMR. Its not a bad weapon but its too ineffective on the two maps so far. The sight-lines are too crowded to use it effectively at mid-long range in Slayer type and its easily outclassed by the Pistol and even the AR in medium to close range. At close range anyone with an AR or a Pistol will destroy you if you are wielding it. The only game type where its handy is CTF on Powerhouse. You can use it pretty effectively to cross map if you get on high ground. The reticule bloom isnt that bad though and maybe I will warm up to it on the bigger maps but for now I wish they had left the BR as it was.

Swordbase. Its a really poor map and its all over the place. Worse the layout is confusing as f**k. Even after playing 20+ games on it I am not sure about the path ways. It doesnt help that it all looks the same. At times its impossible to tell where you are without looking at the callout screen.

Melee. It used to work fine in H3. Now everyone is just doing a double melee to get past the shield bit. It doesnt make the game more tactical, it just makes it annoying.

And tell me how is this fair. You have 80% shields the other guy has 15%. Both of you go for the melee. And both of you end up with zero shields and full health. Its really punishing the guy who had the upper hand in gunplay. Most melee fights now just descend into pummeling the other guy like a boxer. Its not really Halo style clean fighting.

Grenades. Mother of god, Bungie fix this sh*t. It will ruin the game. Its like throwing mini rocket launchers out there.

Afty, I get what you're saying but the fact is that the BR in Halo 3 was BAD! It was a random weapon 'cause of the spread. This comes from a guy who only plays competitive ranked and doesn't even touch the social playlists. At the competitive levels, the first guy to fire the BR almost always wins. But I have a feeling it's different with the Pistol/DMR 'cause they take skill to use (properly).

IMO, the Pistol is supposed to be the main weapon, not the DMR. Plus, the reason you (and a lot of other people) don't like the DMR is 'cause you probably haven't gotten the hang of it. From what I've seen from the (very) good live streams is that they take a lot of skill and understanding. Controlling the bloom is of the utmost importance.

Having said that, the bloom is kind of a issue, I agree. It makes you fire the weapon slow. But to be fair, everybody pretty much sucked with the BR during the first year of Halo 3. I feel Halo is the only game which requires you to thoroughly understand a weapon before you can master it.

Give it some more time. Study the weapons. Maybe you'll start liking them. I know I hated the BR for a year before I started loving it. We've all been playing Halo 3 for almost 3 years now. It'll take some getting used to.

Pistol is never going to be the main weapon for me. Maybe its just me but IMO its almost impossible to get more than 1 kill with one clip of a pistol. Unless the aforementioned grenades stay as they are. My problem with the DMR is that in conjunction with the map design (esp powerhouse) getting kills with it in Slayer is very tough.

Problem is the window of opportunity is very small. You see a player and unless you are sitting on really high ground they are going to move out of your sightlines way too fast. So the only way to get a kill with the DMR in that case would be to spam the trigger. Of course the bloom pretty much kills any chance of that happening.

Its different in CTF where people are more likely to stay in one place to guard the flag or attack or defend. Then you have a reasonable shot at getting kills.

And the biggest difference is that the DMR is EXTREMELY unfriendly to noobs. You have to be a pretty skilled player to get kills with it. Which works fine for those who are but the medium level players (20-35 skill guys in H3) might as well not bother picking it up unless you are playing on a big map. Compare that to a BR where it was pretty noob friendly and more of a pick up and use weapon.

Oh and Melee and grenades are still f**king retarded.

Edit Having said all of that I am sure most of the skilled players here will end up absolutely loving Reach. Its requires more effort and thinking to get a kill than it does in Halo 3.

Im glad to see they are making considerable changes to the game though. Its already pretty tough to play with 2-3 years exp players, if most stuff carried over directly then it would have been very difficult for players starting with Reach.

You're totally right about that and there's been a lot of ranting about it everywhere. I hope Bungie increases the clip size.

Bungie can't be blamed for going back to it's roots. Halo was always meant to be tough. Halo 1 and 2 required a lot of skill but that changed in Halo 3. I'm actually glad that Reach is tougher now. The skill gap has to be there. That's what makes the game competitive.

I know this is out of context but no team in MLG has been able to dominate Halo 3 (even now after 3 years) like they were able to in 1 and 2. The main reason behind this is the skill gap. It has got to increase. But Arena should keep things fun for both sides or else Bungie won't be seeing and returns.

I hear ya man. And I think it's that grenade radius thing they've put in. Grenades still damage the same in Reach but it's feeling drastically different 'cause of the radius thing. In Halo 3, after a certain radius, the grenade didn't damage at all. That's been changed this time around. There's a gradual decrease in the damage as the radius increases. It could very well break the game on some maps.

And about the melee...it definitely needs fixing! I hate that effing 85% 15% thing you mentioned. Just hate it.

Been reading the Bungie forums and man the reticule Bloom, bullet damage and the nades have not gone down too well. :(

Cant wait to see the total shitstorm this time next week when everyone gets to the beta.

I think in the final product I would like

1 Slightly faster normal movement speed.

2 Bloom decreased on the DMR. Pistol and Nedrilfe stay the same.

3 Increase clip size of Pistol by about 20-30% to make it more effective.

4 Sensible damage reduction in grenades.

5 Get rid of swordbase.

Ok point number 5 is a bit unfair but its just bad map design 101 when after 20+ games I still dont know where to go with the flag when we grab it in 1 flag CTF. And its not just me, a whole bunch of people cant find the way. The whole freaking map looks soooo samey its way too easy to loose your way.

Also here is a random thing. On the 1 game that I had lag every one of my assassinations triggered an animation. Even though I NEVER hold the button down. I think the lag makes it harder for the game to process what you are doing in that scenario.
