BACKGROUND

In Lost Odyssey the player takes control of Kaim, a man who has been sentenced to live for 1,000 years. Gameplay revolves around the many generations of which Kaim is a part of, his loves and losses and conflicts of a world nearing a "mystical industrial revolution". Lost Odyssey's story is being penned by the award winning Japanese novelist, Kiyoshi Shigematsu who is working directly with the game's producer Hironobu Sakaguchi on the story sequences. Heading up the artistic demands of the title is famed Japanese comic artist, Takehiko Inoue, while famed composer Nobuo Uematsu has been recruited to create a more contemporary soundtrack. Mistwalker is developing the title, with cooperation with a studio named Feel Plus, a subsidiary of Microsoft created specifically to aid Mistwalker. Former Square employees at Microsoft are also involved. It has been confirmed that the game will come on 4 Dual Layer DVDs, making this the largest Xbox 360 game to date. The game uses Unreal Engine 3.

CHARACTERS

Kaim Argonar

Kaim is a man who has lived for 1,000 years. Even with the ferocity of the battles he encounters, his body will not perish. Though tormented with 1,000 years of memories, he goes about the land as a mercenary of war.

Seth Balmore

Seth is a woman who, like Kaim, has lived for 1,000 years. Undaunted by life, she has a strong will to not give in to the memories of the past, and faces the mystery of her own immortality. During game footage, Seth was shown to have at least one son who was much physically older than she currently is.

Lost Odyssey's wordy little secret

From Xbox 360 Fanboy

http://www.rss.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/10/0...-little-secret/

Looking forward to Lost Odyssey, the next big thing from Mistwalker? Hope you enjoy reading then, because you'll be doing a lot of it according to IGN. Kaim, the game's protagonist, often has flashbacks to moments in his past. Considering he can't die, he's been alive for a very long time, which means he has a long history to look back upon. However, instead of letting the players journey back and actually experience these flashbacks through gameplay, they are played out entirely through text. The flashbacks are actually short stories penned by famed Japanese author Kiyoshi Shigematsu, and Lost Odyssey director Hironobu Sakaguchi decided to let players experience them in their "purest" form. All in all, there are 34 of these flashbacks, each taking 5-10 minutes to read. We have to wonder if these flashbacks are considered gameplay, because Sakaguchi has noted that fully half of Lost Odyssey's 40 hours of gameplay will be taken up by cutscenes.

There's no need to fuss about HD-DVD media not being in Xbox360. Its not like you will be changing discs every single time you play nor you are paying extra because it comes on more than one disc. As you progress in the game according to it you will have to change the disc. I think its nice that Microsoft has kept its options open to all the xbox360 owners instead of forcing everyone with HD-DVD like Sony did with Blu-ray. Incorporating HD-DVD with their console will only raise the price of the console.

The disc swapping is gonna bring back fond memories of my days playing FF VII on the PS1.

I really want this one to be great cause Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata were not the great J-RPGs that I was looking forward to.

All hail "the Gooch".

'Keeping an option open' doesn't work in console business. The devs always have to consider the lowest denominator when making games, they can't leave out gamers who bought lower SKU. That's why now M$ can't ship games on HD-DVDs and devs are struggling to keep up with 'Core' buyers.

I hope MGS4 manages to achieve at least a 50:50 ratio between gameplay and cutscenes. Going by what I've seen so far, the balance looks to be tilting towards the cut scenes.

i think it'll be very story heavy,i dont think he'll change his style atleast not for the finale.

Remember the last time a new media format was "forced on" the customers? Yeah, that would be the PS2 with the DVD. 'nuff said.

Actually DVD was already accepted by mass media as 'future' of home entertainment. This time around though, there's no clear winner in format war, that's why Sony is coming under scrutiny for forcing people to buy Blu-Ray drive. Otherwise the case is same like last two generations, they brought CD format with PS1 to then dominant cartridge consoles, brought DVD format with PS2 to CD dominant consoles and now Blu-Ray to face off with DVD dominant console market.

thats because there was no other console during that time to compete with PS2 ? Xbox came a lot later infact. This time things are different totally

PS2 had fierce competition from Dreamcast during its first year, had a mediocre lineup of launch titles, delayed its European launch and sold less units than PS3 in its first six months. Some 'experts' even predicted the death of PS2 just like they do now with PS3. But just one holiday lineup of 2001 totally turned things around for them.

You have to keep in mind that every time a new format comes out, the people behind the format have to push it for mass dominance otherwise it will fail. If you are the inventor of a certain thing X which may directly or indirectly compete with Y, then you have to do your best to promote X. That's what Sony did. If you want the PS3 if have to take the Blu-Ray with it or else do not buy it, simple enough. I personally think it is a brilliant decision as it will probably win them the format war.

It is brilliant decision no doubt. The cost of components continue to fall over the period of time. Now PS3 is already costing almost equal to 360 WITH built in blu-ray.

It may be a good decision from the POV of pushing critical mass in the format war, but I wonder how much longer Sony's shareholders are gonna allow the management to get away with subsidising the cost of the console to this extent. Even M$, with its far deeper pockets, played it relatively conservatively when it came to the the cost of manufacture of the X360 v/s the retail prices of the SKUs and managed to get a far larger headstart over Sony than originally anticipated. And the shareholders rewarded the company for that. The next 18 months will decisively show the world whether Sony's decision was right. After all, given the undoubted benefits of Blu Ray drive incorporation into the PS3 for the consumers and the devs, Sony is still bleeding thru all their orifices in this effort.

Mmm, what's better than pre-rendered Japanese video game opening cinematic sequences that are based on massively in depth RPGs? Answer: not much. Embedded above is one of those movie quality opening cinematic from Mistwalker's Lost Odyssey. And after watching it, we bet you can't contain your urge to want to play the game, rent a horribly translated Japanese movie or at the very least order some Japanese food. Yes sir, it's that enjoyable and now we know why the game comes on four DVDs. Pre-rendered HD video eats last-gen media formats alive.
