New Super Mario Bros. Wii

between all the late-night torchlight sessons and trophy hunting in MUA2, i finally got to sit down and play this MOMMASUCKA and holy crap is it hard

i'll be frank, i'm not completely sold on the co-op. one thing that immediately irks me is that players can indirectly interact with each other quite often. it wasn't such a big dealie in LBP because the level design was much more straightforward than that. in nsmb wii, it's like... one nudge from your partner while trying to leap to the next platform and BHAM! lava pit. although truth be told this was happening a lot more to my partner than it was to me because i was too busy trying to lonewolf my way through most levels  even still, the game is quite forgiving with extra lives and spare items to boot (for example, using a mushroom from the inventory screen will grant everyone a boost; and most question blocks usually spring with multiple items).

i can't possibly imagine how platforming in this kind of game can work with 4 players but i'm both impressed and at the same time somewhat displeased at the amount of new features added into the game that try to shoe-horn the wii remote's motion controls. it takes a lot of getting used and naturally, you're not ALWAYS performing the same kind of action with one controller shake than you are doing with MULTIPLE kinds of actions. hovering with the propeller cap, doing a twist jump from the ground, floating in a recovery bubble until someone fetches you... they're all tied to one gesture. and i can't really understand the philosophy of having a basic function like picking up items tied to it, when i can easily pick up turtle shells and pow-blocks with the simple hold of the B button. ya know, like how it's been for the last 20 years of mario games!

putting that aside, i'm enjoying the game a lot. maybe even more so than the DS prequel. level design has a lot of variety and everything out of the box can still be played with just one player at the wheel. it took some time for me to get used to the wall jump again, as you have to slide against one first before you can actually jump from it. was too busy trying to wall kick like in megaman x, haha. Bottom line: Mario fans, pick this up. Platforming fans, pick this up. Wii owners, pick this up. Not a game of the year contender in my eyes, but a much appreciated diversion until Galaxy 2.

game shop in karol bagh, i forget the name but the dudes there are pretty generous with their pricings for wii games. we got this for 2.2k. dudes from palika were selling this sh*t for as high as 3k. i hope Gunpei Yokoi-sama rises from the grave and leads a zombie horde to demolish that sh*t piece of a parking lot

sh*t I love this game to bits. Miles ahead of Donkey Kong and just about every other platformer this gen. Easily in my top 10 of this gen.

You really appreciate it more in the second playthrough. Once you have finished you can save anywhere and going hunting for those hidden coins makes you realize how sublime the game really is.
