You bought a processor already, pretty useless to keep it lying around like a fancy paper-weight then. Better get the board now as well. Just to get the base RIG up and about. Honestly, show some restraint on the graphic card front though. Another impulse purchase and you might end up regretting it.

What audio set-up do you plan to use along with your PC?

Apart from that both the motherboards have the same chipset at the heart of things so real life performance will be within hairs breadth of each other, not to mention that the over-clocking potential will also be evenly matched on standard air and water-loop systems.

As long as you don't have any leanings towards any company I will throw in my lot with the ASUS motherboard, simply because,

  • better audio chip (a great plus if you use it along with an appropriate system)
  • ASUS UEFI systems were better in the past, don't know if it still holds.
  • clean layout, chunky buttons (although not the best layout)

GIGABYTE aces with a cleaner layout and better bundle (if you plan to over-clock at lot).

Rosewill is not available in India so I cannot comment but it looks boss. =]

SAMSUNG 840 Pro is good, they seem to have outed a 1TB variant as well. For more news on the same, head here.

You already know my opinion on SMPS.

Hope this helps, Cheerio!

Repped. Haha, yeah my impulse buying is a bit much. But even before impulse buying I kinda looked at all the price trends over a year/since release atleast for the stuff I buy and only go for something that I think is less than $15 away from the best deal I think I'll get during Thanksgiving/Black Friday.

Speakers are 2.1 Logitech Z523s. Very good subwoofer, overall very nice with relatively very little distortion but they're not some optical-audio-only kinda set, they use the 3.5mm port.

I'm using a 2TB Seagate Constellation ES for my main storage and the 1TB version of the 840 Pro is a bit much to spend on for me right now (not as in can't, but don't want to immediately). I'll go with the 256gb Samsung 840 Pro instead. NCIX US has a promo right now (for the next 24 hours) dropping the price from around $240-250 most places to today's $214. Best price that drive (or its Pro-like 830 predecessor during its 'flagship' status days) has been during any major sale is around $200.

I'll try to get the Seasonic 750/760 as much as I can and take the AX ones from Corsair only if there's a huge difference due to some deal popping up.

Will definitely show restraint with the graphic card purchase as much as I can :fear:. More than price changes, the 8xxx/9xxx series' introduction will be the thing that will hold me to this. Until then, maybe I can throw in something cheap or rely on the integrated graphics.

Always a good thing to do some homework, never hurts as you put it.

I used to dream of getting its predecessor when I was in Class X, the Logitech Z4.

If you get the ASUS board, it should do fine, else you can get the GIGABYTE board and throwing in a decent audio-card, ironically CREATIVE and ASUS XONAR series are what you end up with. So I leave the final choice to you.

It was just for informations sake, right now I don't recommend a SSD unless,

  • you really, really need it
  • you can afford it

none of the current generation applications (day-to-day) and games benefit from having an SSD save faster loading times which does not justify your pocket having a hole of ~$200 blown into it. Rather save that cash or purchase a larger hard-drive / better GPU.

Also, the problem is only SAMSUNG and Crucial have launched these super high-density SSD's, there will be first wave adoption (teething) issues soon enough.

Gen II / III is when I would suggest jumping onto the bandwagon with (hopefully) sane SSD prices.

Will definitely show restraint with the graphic card purchase as much as I can. More than price changes, the 8xxx/9xxx series' introduction will be the thing that will hold me to this. Until then, maybe I can throw in something cheap or rely on the integrated graphics.

On-board iGP might not cut if for most current generation titles but more than sufficient for day-to-day tasks and watching / streaming HD content.

AMD plans to do a soft launch some time in October-November, pieces should hit retailers late December, early January. Only the crème de la crème will feature 20nm fab rest will continue on 28nm as far as I know. No news on nVidia's Maxwell save that it shall arrive some time in March-April next year.

We'll see I guess. The MLC ones like the Pro seem to have few issues (looking at the way the 830 fared) compared to the rest of the crop.

Oh, I wasn't intending to game at all on the computer until I got a badass card in there. I meant I'd use the onboard graphics merely to get the machine up and running for day-to-day use only. If the soft launch happens and it's going to take way too long to get the cards, I might just bite the bullet and get a 780 variant like the Superclocked version or the ACX cooler (though it raises overall system temperature) and stick with that. I'm not biased towards red team or green and I'm not gonna get much time to game till the end of September atleast, so I'll wait a couple months and see how it goes. By then, there'll be another machine and some free games to try out.

And I most definitely don't want to wait all the way till March of next year for Maxwell. Just gotta control my trigger finger when it comes to shopping for tech parts :P

I was overclocking my 760 to the specs which Anandtech has specified. http://www.anandtech.com/show/7103/nvidia-geforce-gtx-760-review/17

And the max temp of the gpu at 100% usage is ~75 degrees. Is this fine?

What application / program are you using to simulate load?

This is normal. As the GPU is rarely under 100% load continually, even whilst gaming.

Be careful though about continually using a heavily over-clocking component for extended times. Maybe down-clock it a little and use that as your daily use profile.

I used msi afterburner to over clock and monitoring, gpuz to further check temps, and played tomb raider on ultimate settings to load the GPU.

I'll take your advice about overclocking. Right now, the GPU handles every game at ultra or ultimate settings. When it starts to falter ill think about overclocking.

Haven't tried crysis though.

Will do. Having Internet crisis at home though.

That be good Sire, take your time, do let me know if anything crops up. Cheers!

Also there isn't any better game than Crysis 3 to test your rig performance.

ARMA and Planetside 2 are enough, both are also CPU bound to a level so a more accurate way of keeping score.

Crysis, I would use but only for the graphic card, there are lot better CPU and memory bandwidth stressing real-world systems.

So I went and bought all the stuff last night except these things:

1. Case - Rosewill Thor V2 Black vs. NZXT Phantom (this one specifically)

1. a. Will probably get this fan

2. Probably the Rosewill Dual Band N adapter shown here

3. GPU - which I'm holding off on.

Anyone have better suggestions (in similar price ranges) for the above stuff? The Phantom just looks so much cooler than the Thor V2 and the plastic parts are much better made than the Thor's plastic parts. Been reading way too many reviews and looking at videos but still undecided. Might need to get a front 140mm Red LED fan if I get the Phantom.

I wanted to go internal for 2. but internal adapters seem to universally suck unless you buy something that's way too expensive.

Sad to read about Gaurav buying stuff.

 No patience (or time) these days to hit all the giveaways, and more than enough cash on hand. Still winning now and then though - like a free Constellation ES 2TB :)

Also, I've discovered that online shopping is kinda... addictive :fear:

Why not get mid-tower?

NZXT Phantom 410 Mid Tower USB 3.0 Gaming Case - White for $85

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006I2H04I/

Mid-Towers, well there are options there but I want good ventilation and enough space for a 780 or Titan atleast inside if not more with a large cooler like the Noctua D14.

STAHP! Not the Phantom / Phantom 410, the plastic used is piano finish, reflects like crazy under a light and absolutely the best dust and finger-print magnet that everyone will notice.

You did not provide link or reference.

2. Probably the Rosewill Dual Band N adapter shown here

Fine by me. Although to be completely honest I am very poor at networks and their hardware.

Cabinets that you can consider including Mid-towers with sufficient clearance for your needs,

  • NZXT Tempest EVO (or anything from the TEMPEST line-up)
  • Corsair Graphite 600T
  • Cooler Master STORM Trooper
  • XIGMATEK Elysium
  • Cooler Master STORM Scout II (I have its younger sibling and use it with a Noctua NH-U12P SE2)

Did not follow you here Sire?

Joe raises a valid point, there are plenty of Mid-tower cases that would fit your need whilst consuming lesser space and weighing less where it counts, so you can look into them as well.

Check out Lian Li cases too.

Hope this helps, Cheerio!

Haha, yeah totally missed the fan link (for the 140mm red LED fan). I guess it's pointless to provide it now though if I'm going to have to look for a mid-tower. Yeah, I saw that the finish is a piano-type finish on the Phantom (not the 410, the PHAN-003RD that I linked to). However, dust isn't much of an issue here and I'm not that worried about fingerprints because it'll be me using it.

The "I wanted to go for internal" comment was about the network adapter since my Maximus board will have ethernet but no wifi onboard. Meant that I was planning to get a PCIe card for Wifi but all of them seem to suck for range at 5Ghz (my effin' microwave annoys me at 2.4Ghz) and I'll need to go with a USB solution.

I'll look into the mid-tower list that you gave me (thank you for those, gives me a good starting point) but the Storm Trooper looks to be a full-tower (did you mean the Enforcer?). Badass case though. My requirement is a sexy-looking case that stands out but is sleek. Most of the cases are kinda boxy and have very obvious grilles.

@Piper's reference. Because I used to win literally every piece of hardware I've needed over the years (from iPods to the Nexus to Hard Disks and even a Macbook Air). These days I don't try hard enough and win a bit less stuff (plus too much free stuff at work)

Nah Gaurav, I'm serious. Hit up some contests, win them and show off. Gives the rest of us also some hope.

On-topic, I'm itching to upgrade my graphics card. I have no idea why :| .

Still, I dislike the finish. Different peeps, different P.o.V's, in itself the PHANTOM line-up is strong and the cases are wide and roomy.

Instead of LED fans, I would suggest you go for something like Scythe Gentle Typhoons for cooling. The Silent fan round up @SilentPC.

Yes the STORM Trooper is a Full-tower.

Oh! Clean lines, then you should look at these,

  • Lian Li line-up
  • Silverstone line-up
  • Corsair Obsidian 550D
  • Cooler Master Silencio series cabinet

Do note that these cabinets are optimised for silent operations thus have an overall poorer air-circulation system that can lead to higher internal ambient temperatures.

Hope this helps, Cheerio!

Haha, dude, I'll do just that. Let me get a bit more free time (once the XB1 launch is done with). It's 10pm and I'm typing this from the office.

The fan addition was merely for the sake of LEDs shining through the front on the Phantom case, not really for cooling. It looks to be a better cooled case than most in that price range, except of course the Rosewill Thor V2 - the God of cooling.

Hmm, I don't mind it being a bit louder but I'd prefer cooler and better looking. You'd have gotten an idea of my (sometimes atrocious) taste from the NZXT white-and-red Phantom I linked to (that wasn't the 410 which was a mid-tower btw). Your suggestions set me off looking and the ones that caught my eye were the Thermaltake Chaser (bad cooling??), the Storm Trooper (though a bit more expensive), the HAF 932 (though a bit boring compared to the others. The Corsair 600T is nice too but just looks waaaaaay too plain for my tastes.

I'm like a woman in a clothes shop when it comes to computer components.... confused and can't make up my mind when presented with a lot of options :fear:

EDIT: Actually, looks like I can get the Storm Trooper for $119.99 or the NZXT Phantom for $104.99. In that price range I'm unable to find a good mid-tower that can fit everything and still makes me go "niiiiice" when I look at it. Unfortunately, aforementioned flashier taste haha. Oh and add the Storm Stryker though at $145.

Guys! Need urgent help! I asked about 1.5 lakh pc before but now i have to build my pc urgently, cant wait for ps4 to release so now my budget is stripped down to 50k (Graphics card, ssd, custom heatsink, etc. not included) i need a base system which i can upgrade later (Thinking of GTX 780 for future). I need it for developing softwares, video editing, graphic rendering,etc...

So i am thinking of -

i7-4770 (Or should i go for AMD or 4770K??) ~20k
