R9 series cards are available from Sapphire and MSi as of now. Expect custom versions to trickle in by end of November and early December.

nVidia price-cuts generally do not materialise in India. So apart from the GTX760 which is a spiffy card and priced right I cannot recommend anything apart from AMD.

Thanks for the info.

  • 2 weeks later...

I installed via BIOS....

Good. Uninstall that SAMSUNG application as well.

Use something like HDD Sentinel if you want to monitor hard-drive health and S.M.A.R.T. status.

Ok guys, so I figure its time for an upgrade.

I currently have a Geforce 650 and I figure I will upgrade that sometime mid next year but will be keeping it for the moment. Also will be keeping my HDD and Optical drive so dont need that either. And have 4GB RAM. Rest of my rig is almost 6-7 years old and needs to go.

What I am looking for is -

CPU

Mobo

Cabinet

PSU

Mobo doesnt have to be fancy. Dont need SLI options. CPU I was thinking of an I5 (not sure which version) or AMD 8500. Not sure which, open to suggestion. PSU needs to be able to handle a 760 or something equivalent and 2-3 HDD. Cabinet doesnt have to be special, just big and something that doesnt need me to unscrew sh*t if I wanna add stuff in there.

What do you guys think??

Edit Oh and budget. I was thinking 35k but willing to stretch if needed.

Everything is fine save the budget allocated.

I would ideally recommend the following set-up,

Intel Core i5 4670

GIGABYTE B85M-D3H

Corsair Vengeance / G.Skill RIPJAWS 8GB x1 / 4GB x2

MSi GTX760 Gaming OC Edition / MSi R9-280X 3GB Gaming OC Edition

Seasonic M12 520W / M12 620W

Corsair Carbide 400R

[ Rest as per your needs]

For the AMD take on the same situation,

AMD FX-6300 / 8250

ASUS M5A97 R 2.0

[Rest same as before]

You will have to shell out extra but the RIG will carry on for four years after which you can upgrade as per requirement.

Hope this helps, Cheerio!

Dont need a GPU right now. Like I said I will be keeping the 650 for the next few months. So aside from that what does option 1 run me up to?

The Corsair carbide looks nice. Any idea whats the price range on that? Also is 520w enough for that rig (with the 760 added on at some point) or should I get the 620?

I would say excluding the GPU, the total would come up close to ~40000/-.

What about hard-drives, optical drives, will you purchase those as well?

Please keep in mind if you go for a single RAM module, you loose out on multi-channel bandwidth gains and failure redundancy. So suggest you purchase another module (same) as soon as possible.

The M12II 520W should be more than capable of handling your set-up with a graphic card of the R9-280X's calibre of power requirement with some reserve to spare for over-clocking.

The cabinet and SMPS will not be available in Nehru Place. Price of the cabinet on street Bangalore ~6000/- (inclusive taxes).

Hope this helps, Cheerio!

I am pretty sure I can find the cabinet in NP. SMC are really good at stocking things like that. If not, I can always pick and chose something else I see there that I like. The other parts are I am not sure on.

AMD or Intel? The 8350 is cheaper and a friend seems to think its a good bet. I dont mind dumping another 2k into an i5 4670 but is it worth it?

I was also looking at a 3470. The performance difference between that and the 4670 seems to be almost negligible.

Edit Yeah keeping my current HDD, RAM etc so no need for them.

Like I said earlier, this is all I need ATM -

CPU

Mobo

Cabinet

PSU

I have not seem it in stock with them but you are welcome to try. If you want a cabinet analogous to the Carbide 400R, suggest you look at the following,

  • Cooler Master STORM Enforcer
  • Cooler Master STORM Scout II
  • Cooler Master HAF 912 Advanced / HAF 922 (these will need lots of dust filters)

I would suggest Intel, unless you plan to split time between gaming and video encoding on the scale of a SoHo enterprise.

Intel Core i5 4670 vs. AMD FX-8350

The Intel offerings hold the edge in efficiency, single-threaded performance and carry an iGP for emergency scenarios just in-case.

The difference amongst the Core i5 3470 and 4670 is the difference in socket and the generation difference. The latter is slightly leaner, meaner and newer vis-á-vis the former which comes from an older generation. As you are getting a brand new system, get the latest and greatest.

Edit Yeah keeping my current HDD, RAM etc so no need for them.

Hope it is DDR3 you have on you (what frequency?), otherwise that needs to cycled too. Cheers!

^ Unless you are over-clocking your system I don't think you need a better SMPS.

Rather spend that money on another hard-drive to back up your current ones.

Or simply save that cash.

I've a Corsair GS800...not very sure of its reliability and i'm not sure if it can handle 2 7970s with some headroom remaining.

I saw that in the picture. Considering the cooling you have deployed for the case, it should do fine even with the extra HD7970 thrown in (in-fact get a R9-280X). The only flag would be no over-clocking. But if you want to really get an upgrade look at Seasonic M12II 850W / SS-850KM3.

Also, same keyboard as yours and I regret purchasing it.

If you say it'll do fine then i'll keep it. :P I was actually looking at a Seasonic 80 plus platinum PSU.

keyboard not so bad till now...i like the velvety feeling of the keys. :P

Gold / Bronze level is fine for our needs, Platinum is just to get the kicks or if you are like our very own modgill Sir, please go ahead.

How many spare PCIe connectors do you have on this SMPS?

Wait till it gets older and the keys randomly stop working.

My current PSU is 80 plus bronze...its not about flaunting for me...i just want good components :)

And believe me when I say so...if I were the flaunting kind...then

I dont really remember how many PCIe connectors I've left...2 for sure...may be more.

which keyboard do u think is the best...non-mechanical...i dont like the sound that mechanical keyboards make...i like it to be quiet around me.

Check and confirm please, you should have one 8-pin and one 6-pin. If no, then SMPS change.

You should check mechanical keyboard with Brown Cherry keys. They have tactile feedback but no click to them.

I've 2 6+2 PCIe pins left - should be enough for another card.
