I dont think so, the 480 was never meant to take on the 5970. I imagine that would be the 495 or whatever they release. If they release it. For now AFAIK Nvidia are going up against the 5850 and the 5870 and the price of the 480 and 470 is supposed to be about 5-10% more than the Ati counterparts.

All of that is just hearsay mind you so could be anything. We will know more by this time next week I think. We really need Metro 2033 benchmarks though, its the first proper DX11 title that pushes hardware.

I'm gonna need a good GFX card. I have a Quad core Q6600 2.6Ghz, 4GB DDR2, IP35E motherboard, and an 8800GT

I don't wanna spend more than 8k on it though. Will something like the XFX Radeon HD 5750 XXX Edition have me covered for a year or so?

peace

xfx do radeon cards?

I thought they were like what AMG is to Mercedes!

For gaming? If yes, then at what resolution?

I have a HD 4890 and people (read: killroy and Joy) tell me i am covered for more than one year (unless i wanna play Metro 2033 with tesselation ON which is not possible :D)...

I think 5750 will definitely do the job for an year... :D

I'd suggest to go for a 5770 and OC it, or to be on the safer side go for the 5850. I doubt the 5750 will be good enough at that reso.

Also, wait for some time as Nvidia release the Fermi series of cards. It might cause some price drops/fluctations or something.

Also, if you don't mind a 2nd hand card, 4890 can also be a good choice.

I doubt it. The 4870 is better than the 5750, and you have a 4890.

Why dont you just wait for a couple of months or so? Maybe Ati will drop the prices when Nvidia go up against them. Now doesnt seem like the best time to buy a new DX11 GPU.

Wait for couple of months, I bet you can get 5770 for that price by then. You can OC it and it'll be like 4870 with DX11.

From what I've seen, the 4890 is better than even the 5850. It just doesn't have DX11, is all.

Afaik, 4890 is just OC'd 4870 with better heatsink. And 4870 beats 5770 by small margin. So its basically 5870>5850>4890>4870>5770>4850>5750 (imo)

If its not pressing u then postpone the Upgrading for a month or so. The fermi will have a definite effect on the market either by performance or by price war. Its a win win for u.

And while u are at it, try to Volt mod your card. Will hold ur for for atleast a month or two without begging to be replaced.

Yup, not always.

The 98 of nvidia actually performs SLIGHTLY better than the 88 series.

The 9800gt is actually a rebadged 8800gt, with higher speeds etc.

I highly suggest waiting for Fermi, or a 2nd hand 4890.

4890/4870 both can be OC'ed very well, with significant increase in numbers.

Yes for gaming. My current monitor supports 1680*1050 max

peace

I'm in no hurry. I just don't want to reach a point where my 8800GT can't cope with new games well enough.

peace

Then IMHO, it will be great to wait for a little while. Once the Fermi is out, there will be some shifting in prices for sure.

I think even the GeForce cards work that way. Someone was telling me his 9 series card cant perform as well as my 8 series card.

peace

First two numbers. 48xx becomes 58xx in the next gen. And so on. So ideally 48xx will beat 57xx. But not always.
