Relay 5 - The Story so Far...

Recommended Posts

In the year 2148, explorers on Mars discovered the remains of an ancient spacefaring civilization. In the decades that followed, these mysterious artifacts revealed startling new technologies, enabling travel to the furthest stars. The basis for this incredible technology was a force that controlled the very fabric of space and time.

They called it the greatest discovery in human history.

The civilizations of the galaxy call it... MASS EFFECT.

Main Character-Commander Shepard.

Lieutenant Commander Shepard is the human protagonist of Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and the upcoming Mass Effect 3, whose gender, appearance, skills and pre-service history are all customizable and have an impact on the story. Shepard's first name is also customizable, but is never stated in-game. The default pre-made Shepard is a male Soldier named John, with the Earthborn/Sole Survivor profile.

Shepard was born on April 11, 2154, is a graduate of the Systems Alliance N7 special forces program (service no. 5923-AC-2826), and is initially assigned to the SSV Normandy as Executive Officer. Shepard later becomes the first human to join the Spectres, an elite special task force for the Citadel Council.

Some Interesting Facts :-

  •
  • Commander Shepard is named after Alan Bartlett Shepard, Jr., the second person and the first American in space (May 5, 1961). He later commanded the Apollo 14 mission in 1971 and became the fifth person to walk on the Moon.
  • Shepard's birthday (April 11) is the same day that Apollo 13 (an American attempted manned moon landing mission that almost ended in disaster) was launched (April 11, 1970).
  • The default male face for Shepard is based on that of Dutch model Mark Vanderloo.
  • BioWare held a contest prior to the release of Mass Effect 3 to allow fans to choose a new default face for female Commander Shepard.

New Features

Mass Effect 3: Galaxy at War

Mass Effect 3: Galaxy at War is an optional gameplay system in Mass Effect 3 that will allow the player to manage Commander Shepard's resources in the galactic war against the Reapers. Galaxy at War directly affects the state of the war effort in single-player, and can determine how the final confrontation of Mass Effect 3 plays out. Access to Galaxy at War will require an Online Pass which will be included with new copies of Mass Effect 3.

Multiplayer

Cooperative multiplayer is a game mode that will be featured in Mass Effect 3, and marks the debut of multiplayer in the Mass Effect series. In this mode, up to four players can join together online and customize characters to fight on the front lines of the galaxy-wide war against the Reapers. Progress in co-op earns the player rewards in Mass Effect 3: Galaxy at War that can be used to influence the outcome of Mass Effect 3's single-player mode.

Different Play Styles

Mass Effect 3 will feature different play styles for people who prefer a different presentation. The three different styles are Roleplaying, Action, and Story. Roleplaying is the same Mass Effect game style as in previous entries. Action mode will streamline the cut scenes with pre-selected dialogue options, throwing in a mix of Paragon and Renegade choices. The Story style will make combat very easy for players who are invested in the story, but struggle at playing the game.

Kinect(Only On Xbox 360)

Mass Effect 3 for the Xbox 360 will include optional Kinect functionality. The Kinect will allow the player to choose dialogue options by reading the paraphrase aloud and give tactical orders to the squad, such as changing positions or using powers, with voice commands. The Kinect features will not serve as an alternative control system, but will "augment" in-game conversations.

Reputation System

"Paragon actions are usually about building alliances, obeying galactic law, and basing decisions on sympathy and trust," explained BioWare senior writer Patrick Weekes. "Renegade actions usually involve a pragmatic, results-focused approach, breaking laws or taking extreme steps as required to get the job done.

"If you take every Renegade option in the game, you may be brusque with your friends and brutal to your enemies; you may make hard choices that cost you friendships; you may have to go to your grave carrying the weight of crimes that would have you reviled as a monster if they ever came to light. But you are always fighting to save the galaxy, no matter what tactics you take."

In Mass Effect 3 you earn three types of Reputation: Paragon, Renegade and General Reputation. Missions without major Paragon/Renegade decisions can be better rewarded this way, through General Reputation. All three types combine to increase the same Reputation bar.

(Paragon Reputation is depicted with a blue bar, Renegade with Red. You won't see General Reputation, but it will grow the overall blue/red Reputation bar while maintaining your Paragon/Renegade ratio.)

The point is: whether you make all of your decisions in a Paragon way, Renegade way or neutral way won't affect your overall Reputation score.

Perhaps there is still hope....
