From IGN:

The latest issue of Famitsu has the first report on an original DS RPG being developed by Image Epoch and set to be published by Sega. Titled World Destruction, the game is drawing lots of attention due to its staff, which includes people who worked on Xenosaga, Chrono Trigger, Grandia and Final Fantasy VII.

World Destruction is set in world in which humans are ruled by beasts. Humans have formed an organization, the World Destruction Committee, whose goal is to destroy the world. You play as Kirie, a new member of this organization, and someone who, it turns out, has the secret power needed for the world's destruction. As the game progresses, Kirie heads out on adventure to find allies in order to bring about the destruction of the world.

Visually, the game combines sprite-based characters with 3D backdrops. From what we can tell, the backdrops are quite detailed, particularly during battle scenes, which make use of both screens to display the action.

We don't have too many details on the specifics of that battle system at the moment, but it appears that the game will feature turn-based battles with a few features pulled from the fighting genre. Proper button timing is required for the most damage. You also have access to cancel commands for stopping your attacks. Height will also play an important role during combat.

As for that big staff that's causing all the buzz, Famitsu reports that the game is being worked on by a staff of over fifty. Included in the bunch are Masato Kato as scenario writer (former work on Xenogears, Final Fantasy VII and Chrono Trigger), Kunihiko Tanaka as main character designer (former work on Xenogears and Xenosaga), and Yasunori Mitsuda as composer (prior work on Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross and Xenogears). The game's director, Kyoki Mikage, comes from Image Epoch and previously directed Luminous Ark. Sega's Yoichi Shimosato is producer, having previously worked on games like Shining Force. Outside of this, the game's visual and character staff has support from the people who worked on Grandia, Drakengard, and Ertain Odyssey.

Development on what's sure to be one of the biggest DS RPGs this year is at 70% complete, Famitsu reports, with a Japanese release planned for the summer. Sega is really pushing this in Japan, with an anime and manga planned to kick off in July, so we can probably expect an international release.

Cue the obligatory "god I need a DS" troupe. :furious:

Edit: Official site is up, better shots of gameplay and artwork can be found there.

I'm not judging their work quality, numbskull, I'm asking why does there have to be TWO people for character design and composing. Each. :P

Edit: And PFFFFT, Final Fantasy was well whored-out before Sakaguchi packed his bags.

Nonetheless, he acted as executive producer for X-2, which means he still played a role in the game's development and the aforementioned "whoring".

What about his director debut in Spirits Within? You know, the second worst box-office flop of all time~ :P

Besides he's said in an EDGE interview that the way they make an FF game right now isn't as it used to be where they'd find a way to cram in as many ideas as possible into a game, now they're more streamlined and somewhat lacking in content, something which did not agree with him.

We're talking about when he was still under Square's wings, right before the Enix merger. He still had an active role in how the Final Fantasy games would shape up, and still offered to be executive producer to one of the lamest new-age Charlie's Angels tribute since, well, the Charlie's Angels millennium remakes. If that's not direct involvement in the whoring of a franchise, I don't know what is.

And yes Spirits Within sucked, your point being?

In your own words, Sakaguchi nurtured FF brilliantly. Was that during this brilliant rendition of the brilliantly constructed, brilliantly high-budgeted The Spirits Within, of which Sakaguchi brilliantly directed himself? Brilliantly?

(Of course, if we're just talking about the FF games, I'll gladly stop being a prick. It was his first debut, after all )

GAH JAPANESE RPG FANBOY TALK MAKES ME FRUSTRATED, let's just talk more about this game, mmkay? Let's start with MOE CLEAR SCREENIES:

There was no "SquareEnix" officially, not until after Sakaguichi had stepped down. Talks of a merger were around since 2000, but it was the financial failure of Spirits Within that pretty much made it mandatory for Square to go ahead with the idea and join forces (as reluctant as Enix was about it, at the time).

Squenix must've really cut him deep to actually even consider moving from a company he co-founded to make games for a gaijin.

Oh, please shut up. Sakaguchi has mentioned on several occasions about the joys that have come with working on his own company he founded, and if anyone has to put some blame (though not necessarily a "fault") for Square's eventual merger, it's Sakaguchi himself. Also, hi there, MistWalker also develops games for the DS. Just because they get financial backing from Microsoft, doesn't mean they're mutually exclusive to just one platform.

BUT REALLY NOW HOW ABOUT THIS GAME DOESNT IT LOOK AWESOME OR WHAT just get a ds already why are you punishing yourself

Dude, what's spoken to the press and what happens in the organization itself are two different beasts. If there wasn't any sense of disappointment with the way things were running, he'd still be around. Happy sound bites make for decent press but still waters run deep imho.

What you're implying is borderline speculation, and if what's fed to press is considered unreliable in your eyes, why did you bring up the EDGE interview in the first place? Honestly, just saying there's bad blood between two associates because one got the stiff and the other gets the rights to the series he built and the company he founded (even though Sakaguchi left voluntarily), doesn't nearly explain everything enough. This isn't the Jeff Gerstmann-philosophy power hour.

Oh yeah and the screens look awesomesauce.

YES THATS MOAR LIKE IT

No release plans for outside of Japan, but it's only a matter of time. Sega would be stupid NOT to pursue this chance, and if stuff like Valkyria Chronicles can get an international release, so can this game.

It's only a matter of time!

I will eat my Final Fantasy IV import cart raw if Sega doesn't at least announce plans to bring the franchise abroad (a release date can come later, I guess, just so long IT COMES :majesty:). Again, I'm fairly optimistic. F***ing Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer got an international release, and no one even asked for it, let alone care for it.

Dude, I know it's OT

It's okay, we're pretty much having a field day with OT posts in this topic but at least they're related to the source material at hand. Almost. :majesty:

but Shiren is a sexy game from what I hear from my friends.

Wasn't trying to knock the game itself, just proving that even no-name titles can get some attention. I've yet to play the game, but not very big on Chunsoft's take on Rogue-like junk. At least it looks better than Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (zing)

HOUSTAN WE HAVE LOCALIZATION CLEARANCE, PERMISSION TO WET MYSELF?

For their planned December 4 announcement of the US release of Image Epoch's RPG World Destruction, Sega PR uploaded a set of English screenshots to their FTP server. They then proceeded not to make an announcement. NeoGAFfer Volcynika spotted the suspicious "Sands of Destruction" folder on the FTP server and checked the contents to find four screens, which you can see in our gallery. We can confirm that yes, they were found on Sega's PR server.

It's not too much of a surprise: Image Epoch president Ryoei Mikage told Siliconera at TGS that the company was currently working on the North American version of the game, with new music from Chrono Trigger composer Yasunori Mitsuda. We're happy to see an "official" "announcement," though, of course! We expect a for-real announcement soon, to catch up with this leak.

Not sure how I feel about the game if it ends up being changed to "Sands of Destruction" (sounds too Prince of Persia-y), but at least it fits the tone. Most of the areas surrounded in the game's continents are sandy. Anakin Skywalker would probably fate from over-sandiness.

Well, hot dog: We have a wiener!

According to the press release, Sands of Destruction follows a group called the World Annihilation Front who, in an attempt to free the world from the tyrannical Ferals, decide to destroy it, using the powers of a kid named Kyrie Illunis.

The "voice system" seems to have been dubbed the "Quip System" in the US release: characters can enhance and change their status in battle by saying "inspiring battle commands," which are found throughout the world and equipped by characters. It's a game about trying not to save the world, in which you battle by talking! All they need in order to totally break JRPG tradition is to put a very friendly, outgoing person in the lead who remembers his childhood just fine.

:`D~
