reaper
E3 2007: Hellboy: The Science of Evil First LookA big red demon in the palm of your hand. by Greg Miller July 12, 2007 - You figure, there are two ways a Hellboy videogame could go. You could take the franchise and use suped-up visuals to try and match the might of that movie from a few years ago, or you could take the franchise and move more toward the comic book with more stylized character models and so on. Hellboy: The Science of Evil on the PSP went the comic book route, and that's not a bad thing. Although both the console versions and the PSP will share the same story -- our earth-bound demon's familiar foe Herman von Klempt is trying to make some monsters to jumpstart the Nazi party -- the styles are just a bit different. Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 feature detailed models of characters, while the PSP version of the game has a cast that's a bit more comic-booked up -- more color and artistic shading. The Science of Evil works well with the simpler look and shines when Hellboy interacts with characters in his environment. When Hellboy stops to chat with an enchanted gate in a spooky graveyard, the dialogue pops up in text boxes with the character faces next to them. It might not sound like much, but the fun of Hellboy comes from his one-liners and characterization. From what we've played of the console versions, the funny stuff gets lost in the visuals and minimal dialogue. On the PSP, it shines. The controls for the Science of Evil have been boiled down to a simple pick-up-and-play format. The left shoulder button shoots Hellboy's trademark pistol, triangle is his heavy punch, square is his normal punch, circle is his grab and throw and X jumps. We put the big guy through the graveyard level in the Carpathian Mountains and wound up grabbing bambinis, creepy little dudes with rings on top of their heads, and throwing them into walls before blasting them with our piece. Occasionally, Hellboy would have to smash in a mausoleum door or toss the top off a tomb, but chances are that if he was on screen, Hellboy was throwing his weight around. In certain places, Hellboy would walk through an entrance only to have the opening suddenly close behind him and an on-screen guide inform us that we had to beat all of the enemies in the area. Survive the onslaught, and the game breaks down your stats -- total hits, total damage dealt, total time and style rank. Hellboy: The Science of Evil features the voices of Selma Blair (Liz Sherman), Doug Jones (Abe Sapien) and Ron Pelman (Hellboy) as well as a multiplayer co-op mode where buds can play through levels as Hellboy and one of his cohorts.
