SchizoidFreud
Midway halves Q2 losses, delays BlackSite, Wheelman Though Nintendo continues to reap record profits from the Wii phenomenon, the spring of 2007 will go down as a painful period for many third-party publishers. Yesterday, THQ and Electronic Arts both reported losses for the April-June quarter. Today, Midway Games followed suit, reporting a $14.3 million net loss on $31.8 million of net revenue for a $0.16 loss per share. That's less than half the $31 million the Chicago-based publisher lost during the same period in 2006. Midway's shortcoming comes on the heels of several high-profile second-quarter launches. With solid reviews, The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar sold over 172,000 copies during the quarter, including the special edition of the game. (GameSpot originally reported erroneous NPD Group data putting the number at 71,000 units, and regrets the error.) Meanwhile, the Wii edition of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon only moved about 38,500 units, and the critically drubbed Hour of Victory sold just 16,456 units at retail domestically. Unsurprisingly, Midway president and CEO David Zucker stressed Midway's third- and fourth-quarter lineup, which features a trio of the year's most anticipated titles. "The response to our 2007 line-up at E3 was overwhelmingly positive, and we believe this sets the stage for our upcoming releases of Stranglehold, BlackSite: Area 51, and Unreal Tournament 3," he said in a statement. In an often-frank interview with GameSpot prior to this year's E3, Zucker doggedly dodged questions regarding The Wheelman, which Midway promoted heavily at E3 2006. The reason for that became clear during this morning's postearnings conference call, when Zucker revealed the driving action game had been pushed back to 2008. The delay removes the Wheelman from the jam-packed 2007 holiday season, which will see dozens of lower-profile games take on such titans as Halo 3, Grand Theft Auto IV, Rock Band, and Crysis. However, Midway also announced it is moving BlackSite: Area 51 into that very fray, bumping it from its September release. "Our expected release dates for BlackSite: Area 51 on all platforms are October 26th in Europe and November 5 in North America," said Zucker, who also promised a "full demo in the next few months for Xbox Live, PS3 and PC." Speaking with analysts, Zucker portrayed the delays as part of Midway's long-term next-generation push, which he said will kick off with Strangehold's release on August 27. "We believe we're putting in place the systems, tools, processes and talents for high-developed high-quality next generation games spanning a wide variety of mass market genres," he said, promising more 2008 announcements soon. vinitwins
Its region locked. Only US IPs can d/l the demo. when did this start vicky? from what i remember (my era ie the stone age), the workaround was to create 3 GTs (viz US/UK/JAP) in order to access all marketplace content. there was some buzz after the video downloads that MS might disable this practise - so now they check your IP? hmm any workarounds for this? there must be -- hmm i think 2-3 years back i used to use a port forwarding software to connect to my US server and circumvent port blocks and get a US IP (for p2p leeching) - maybe its time to call my unix buds again V
vinitwins
iirc the procedure was SSH Tunnelling (Port Forwarding) will check and report progress here. V
SchizoidFreud
yep, theyve region locked most of the downloads in the marketplace, the gamerpics, themes,tv shows etc. , some demos have been region locked too. Is there any way to use a proxy over xbl or to spoof ur IP address?
MarketTantrik
Since the update in May 2007, M$ has started restricting access to Xbox Live Marketplace based on geographical IP, not just GamerTag regions. This was because of the protest by movie studios and content licensors who licensed content to M$ for the US, Euro and Japanese markets only. Also, by providing access to the movies, TV shows, etc. to all countries, M$ was violating certain national content norms. So they did the safest thing for them (but irritating and frustrating thing for us) and locked down certain portions of the XBLM content to specific geographical IPs. Why they have done this for a game demo? I dont think even God knows.
vinitwins
yes there is - you need a host located in the US, preferably a linux box which you can SSH into to access US content. reading up on the procedure, i used to do this a long time back. vinitwins
some region specific game demos can *still* be accessed using the old multiple GT trick - i just downloaded the cricket demo. V
sanjoy
ucan dload the cricket demo.. but u cant dload the latest ones like Stranglehold and Bioshock @MT.. they region lock demos because of the Mature rating... both Stranglehold and Bioshock have the M rating which is why its region locked
vinitwins
still waiting for my unix friend to configure my us linux box to allow me to ssh/tunnel into it - once thats done i should be able to access all us content as well. vinitwins
was easy enough on the pc - putty to ssh into the linux box and then setting individual apps to use that tunnel for unrestricted access. but i see your point - will check on this - maybe something at the router level to forward all ports used by the 360 to the linux box?? sanjoy
but the traffic ur forwrding to the US box using the router. will have to go through ur Indian ISP in the first hop so this beats the whole purpose.. it wont work

vinitwins
no, the final ip will be of the us linux box - thats where the packet will seemingly originate from (the linux box will act as a middle man without disclosing from where the request originated) V http://www.rzg.mpg.de/networking/tunnelling.html
