About This Game

Evolving the shooter genre with its unique and exhilarating combination of fluid action and combat, Damnation features huge, open environments, frenetic combat, daredevil acrobatics and high-octane vehicle-based stunts. Presenting players with an intense test of reflexes, quick thinking and rapid-fire conflict, Damnation will feature vast, breathtaking landscapes, each covering miles of distance and thousands of vertical feet. Billed as a 'shooter gone vertical,' and visually inspired by iconic elements of American history, these massive streaming landscapes will form the battlegrounds for a post-industrial conflict between humanity and an unstoppable arms dealer hell-bent on total world domination. Players will be able to choose their own paths and navigate the world by performing daredevil feats on the edge of human ability. However players aren’t the only ones with mind-blowing acrobatic skills; intelligent enemies will give chase and engage players in frantic gun fights and attacks that can come from any direction -- in Damnation's world there’s no safe place to hide. In addition to the single player experience, Damnation comes complete with a unique set of multiplayer options that take full advantage of the game’s expansive levels.

Ign E3 2008: Damnation Update

July 15, 2008 - While most of the demo of Damnation we were shown today at E3 has been shown in the past, we were given a glimpse of another environment in a level called Boomtown. This mining town tucked in the Colorado Rockies offers a slightly more claustrophobic atmosphere while inside the actual mine. The Peacemakers (the name of the small band of guerilla fighters trying to save the US from destruction) in this level are trying to get through the mine to another objective to fight the evil Prescott Standard Industries armies. Unfortunately for them, they've run across a problem: the miners have all been poisoned with crazy juice making them hell bent on killing anyone else that dares have a face or wear a wide brim hat.

Like the rest of the game, level design here is focused on verticality to accentuate the acrobatic platforming elements that Codemasters is hoping will set the game apart from other 3rd person action games. There were plenty of objects and structures inside the mine for Rourke and his crew to bounce around on while fighting enemies. The action is pretty quick and certainly looks interesting with all of the flipping, diving, hanging, running, and dying going on though the animations could use some work. But as with other levels, it's not totally necessary to engage every enemy in combat. If you're more about going around the fight, that's fine. Each level in Damnation provides several paths to the final objective.

Damn!

The level was, as you might expect, enclosed in rock walls with plenty of wooden bracings along with larger wooden structures in the bigger caves. The last scene in the demo showed a tall rock spire jutting out of the center of the large cavern leading to the surface. Plenty of enemies barred the way on all sides to make sure players will have a challenge which ever path they choose to take. This afforded the opportunity to see Rourke's Spirit Vision ability which is given to him by a Native American shaman partway through the game apparently. This basically allows the player to see any enemies as red shadows through walls and other objects which, as you would expect from other games with similar mechanics, provides the opportunity for some extra planning before any attack. The catch with Spirit Vision is that Roarke will be rendered motionless and weaponless while engaged in the mode.

At this point, Damnation is on track for a simultaneous holiday release on PC, 360, and PS3.
