playstation
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on Thursday accomplished the task of developing the country's own navigation system with the successful launch of IRNSS-1G, the last in the series of seven navigation satellites. Here are 10 things to know about desi 'GPS': Hailing the successful launch of navigation satellite IRNSS-1G, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has named the new system as 'NAVIC' (boatman) as he dedicated it to the people of the country and said SAARC countries can also take advantage of its services. Modi gave the expanded form of 'NAVIC' as 'Navigation with Indian Constellation'. He showered praise on ISRO scientists for giving the "priceless gift" to countrymen, saying they have realised the dream of 'Make-in-India', 'Made-in-India' and 'Made-for- Indians' to fulfill the needs of common people. 5. Apart from India, only a few other countries, including the US, the European Union, China and Russia have their own navigation systems in place. 6. Indian space agency officials said IRNSS system is unique as it consist only seven satellites while other systems in the world have more than 20 satellites. However, while most other systems are global, the Indian system is regional in nature. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/India-gets-desi-GPS/listshow/52029512.cms ISRO ..Love you guys. Only people in country that make me proud every time along side the Defence forces ofcourse. Mods/admins ...This is proud moment for the country nothing political or such ...Please don't delete it as news. SO what does this exactly mean now....More accurate results? also will it be free? Will my Garmin Gps be able to catch the signal?

ALPHA17
SO what does this exactly mean now....More accurate results? also will it be free? Will my Garmin Gps be able to catch the signal? Means nothing as of now because we will have to have it implemented like a standard, like GPS, GLONASS so that it gets supported and developed. The good thing though is we are now capable of having our own navigation system in-place of the other standards which means in times of conflict or international sanctions we are independent of any issue, blockades. Problem is, it is still regional so we need to put more satellites up for it to become a globally relevant system (which will get in international support and traction). I dont mind if its just for India but anyidea if old gps devices will be able to catch this?

glados87
I think they measure accuracy by determining how precise the satellite can locate ...from wat I read few months ago European tracking device has highest accuracy. GPS is US (5 meter) and GLONAS is Russian (5 -10meter)GALILEO is European (1meter)

I did not even knew Europe had it's own satellite gps program. But you know what...there seems to be something wrong with Google earth and GPS coordinates from GPS system. I had few coordinates taken in an beach and when i came home and put the coordinates on google map it shows me somewhere in the sea...where as i was at the beach...
