SchizoidFreud
TURNING POINT : FALL OF LIBERTY Published by: Codemasters Developed by: Spark Unlimited Genre: Shooter Release Date: US: November 2007 Europe: November 30, 2007 Also Available On: PlayStation 3 Official Website : http://www.codemasters.com/turningpoint/ A first-person shooter adventure set in an alternate version of WWII and its aftermath, where the US lost and the Nazi Party came to rule the world. The world is now a very different place, and even America has been taken over by German forces. Now is a critical time for history, for the forces of liberty to stand strong and fight hard for the future of humanity. The premise is simple: in 1931 Winston Churchill was hit by a taxi, causing his lifelong limp (this actually happened, by the way). In Turning Point's alternate universe, Churchill actually died from this accident. Without such a charismatic leader, Europe fell completely to Nazi control. Which kind of sucks for everyone. So what's next in Nazi sights? Yep, you guessed it: the good ol' US of A. In 1931, Winston Churchill was hit by a cab in New York City. In the real world past, he survived and went on to rally the British people to fight against the Nazi threat; however, in this alternate timeline, Winston Churchill died soon afterwards, allowing the Third Reich to invade the British Isles, and, presumably, along with her allies, the rest of Europe, Iceland and Greenland. After that victory, the Axis go on to attack the American Eastern Seaboard by 1950, and the opening scene in the game places you right in the heat of a surprise attack on New York. The crucial point here is that you don't play as a soldier. You're not connected to the military at all. You're just a normal, average citizen and instead of trying to win the war single-handedly, like in some other war-based FPS games, your main objective is simply to survive the doctrine of total war. P.S. Waiting for more details on this game. Posted whatever I had -- MT
KnackChap
demo up on XBL here are some quick impressions from ppl who dld and played it Graphics aren't that good. AI sucks. I like the whole switch-er-oo with the story of what would've happened if Churchill died. Guns sound like Donald Duck trying to rap. The graphics very much look like a last-gen game. The textures and the smoke effects are so low res I don't know why the game had to load in the middle of the demo. It should have easily fit in the ram. The game is very jaggie and it can't even hold a stable framerate somehow. The game feels like it's running on the old Medal of Honor engine from ps2. It has that same stuttering animation where the enemies lack transitional animations. The controls are terrible. There's only three sensitivity settings-low,medium and high. The first two are way too slow. The high one has slight delay on the controls so you always end up "over steering" the cross hairs. The game is extremely scripted with that tired "people die falling all around you" stuff. I thought games had gotten past that. Well that was pretty disgusting. Do this devs actually care about the frame rate? Man that was all over the place. And graphics are abysmal as well so I dot see why it runs this badly. Also, the Normal sensitivity setting is too slow, while the High one is too fast/barely playable. Bah. edit: can't wait to check the PS3 version of this. akS !
Hey, used the Search feature ( Saved a Kitten :jumpy: ) Anyways here is a Review, if you get it in trade/free/dropped on floor... please don't play it. Turning Point caught my eye when i saw snippet of its concept art way back in Aug '06. The fact always intrigued me that how would U.S react if ever "The Third Reich" decided to invade them. So, Turning Point: Fall of Liberty revolves around the premise that Winston Churchill died when he was hit by a taxi in 1931, though in reality he survived. With one of Hitler's most stalwart foes out of the way, the Third Reich conquers all of Europe and then sets its sights on the US. Well, that's all you know about why the Nazi's invade US. There is absolutely no information as to how Europe got conquered and why US was surprised by the Nazi invasion, what happened to their navy? Basically, the whole selling point of the game lies in its Concept Arts and Previews which were showcased before its actual release. Once you really get into playing the game, you will be very disappointed. First Concept Art for the Game In the game you play as Dan Carson, a New York construction worker who is dragged into the résistance against the Nazi's when they invade New York. In the beginning of the game, you are working on a New York skyscraper when all hell breaks loose as the Nazi's invade New York. You make your way down the Skyscraper when a series of scripted events take place which also help you in understanding the controls. As you are making your way down the skyscraper, you see a Nazi Paratrooper land in front of you but he is busy unhooking his parachute. This scene gives you an introduction about the melee combat, you go behind the Nazi paratrooper and press "E" to initiate a third person view of the combat and it shows how Carson throws the Nazi trooper off the skyscraper and then gets his gun. Later on in the game you also get the option of grabbing your enemies and using them as shields, the camera angle during this scenario is titled and gives an awesome look to it. Turning Point does have a wide arsenal of weaponry but most of the times you will be using MP50 as your primary weapon. Soon after when you reach the ground, you become part of the resistance because you are carrying a gun ( Hmmph ?! ). Here on forth, you carry missions with such bravery that would even put Rambo's ordeals to shame. Turning Point portrays US as a very helpless nation without explaining the reasons behind it. Literally, few hours after the Invasion it is shown that President and Vice-President of US step down from their positions for reasons unknown (Hmm? What can it be?) Nazi's appoint a dummy president after that. Messages over the radio and television are announced asking the US forces to lay down their arms and surrender (Did US have any army in the first place?) So now with the White House under the Nazi control, you are bestowed upon the task of fighting an entire Nazi army. Alone. Only the first act comprises of all the exciting sequences in the game, later on you follow a very monotonous path throughout the game. You are forced to fight in Narrow Streets, Subways, and Courthouses etc... You don't really get a feel of the invasion at all when you are made to fight in such close quarters. To make things worse, the missions have no fluidity in them whatsoever. One minute you are trying to get away from the Nazi forces and the next you land up in a truck going into a basement to rescue a prisoner(!?). Soon after, you attack the White House to kill the Dummy President for reasons unknown ( What will you actually achieve by doing that? ) and coincidently you stumble upon documents that show a Atomic Bomb facility in London ( Oh teh irony ! ) and that the Third Reich is going to use a US state as it's testing ground. You manage to get hold of a plane (Third Reich Charter Service probably...) that flies you to London and you paratroop on the facility (Wait!? I am a paratrooper now? ) and once again, you are all alone and meant to infiltrate the High Security Nuke Facility and destroy the Nukes (Mr. Rambo will probably retire after reading this...) The story is handicapped from the word Go and the missions that pursue don't help in any way. The Story along with the engine needed more time for tuning. Firstly, how did the developers not expect people to notice trucks with wheels which don't rotate? Yes, my dear, they actually show the trucks sliding on the ground with no tire movement whatsoever (Or Maybe it's some high - tech Nazi invention?). Secondly, the game actually has bodies disappearing in front of you. At times the bodies would disappear the second you kill them. The game did not even perfect the movement of the Soldiers; you see soldier’s teleporting into cover and not taking cover naturally. Maybe.... and this is a huge MAYBEE...since this game is all part of a Alternate Reality/History, Nazis had some really uber cool inventions? Maybe Nazis had invented a technology that would directly teleport them to Germany when they died, hence the disappearing of bodies. Maybe the Nazis had invented the technology to go invisible? Hence the invasion of US without them having any clue on ... was happening. Eh? Maybe? Never hurts to be optimistic. I did like few portions of the game though, during the fight through the city, i saw posters set on the walls by the Nazi reading, “Join the Nazi Youth ", posters on shops reading "Eviction Notice by the Third Reich". It somewhat helped in setting a mood of the invasion. At times when it was quiet, screams could be heard throughout. At one instance, i heard a Woman shout “Please don't do it, please” after which i heard a German voice and after that a lot of gun fire, this helped in setting the mood perfectly of the inhuman act of the Reich. The melee attacks were fun for a while when it was environment related ( Lots of environment related melee attack are present in game ) e.g. you go into a toilet and see a Nazi soldier defecating, you initiate melee combat after which Carson grabs the Nazi's head and sinks it * You know where * and ultimately kills the nazi who drowned in his own shiat, sweet ! The melee combat looses it touch later when you realize it’s too easy and also the fact that Bitch Slapping a Nazi won't kill him in reality but according to the game, it does. The game had its moments but the drawbacks completely over shadow the good points. The Game tries very hard to portray the invasion in a very cinematic and authentic manner but the never ending Glitches; Ragdoll bugs; Stupid AI and a story without any fine tuning completely spoils the mood of what could have been an interesting and enjoyable experience. The Ending will make you think, if the title "Turning Point: Fall of Liberty" made any sense. The ending is so atrocious that whole concept of playing through the game equals a void.
