NYCC 09: Overlord: Dark Legend

Think you were a bad kid? This Wii sequel will show you what it's like to really be a bully.

February 7, 2009 - Codemasters is showing off two Overlord titles at Comic Con this year. The first is a straight sequel to the PC and Xbox 360 game from a few years back. The other, Overlord: Dark Legend, is a prequel to the Overlord story that's exclusive to the Wii. We spoke with Codemasters' marketing manager Dan Robinson about both games today to find out just what to expect.

The first thing to expect is that it's fun to be the bad guy. Burning people, clubbing sheep and generally causing mayhem and misery is the Overlord's reason for living. But in true Overlord fashion, you're not going to want to have some little minions to boss around. The minions here are like little gremlins or demons that do your bidding. They're sort of like dogs with rabies; they do what you ask because they want your approval, but they also don't mind killing everyone they see.

To command them, you'll use your Overlord Gauntlet, a present from a well-known benefactor. You'll control the Gauntlet by using the Wii motion controls. The nunchuck controls your Overlord, giving you options for movement and slash-based attack moves. You'll control the minions using the Wiimote, which gives you a bit more control than the sweep commands found in the Xbox 360. You can also grab your minions by the neck and throttle them with the Wiimote, causing them to build up an explosive charge which detonates shortly after you let them go.

The story here was penned by Rhianna Pratchett, daughter of Terry Pratchett and a well known writer in her own regard. It makes use of familiar fairytale archetypes, but skews them to create a sort of parody. So, for instance, you'll meet Little Red Riding Hood but she'll only want to lead you into a wolf ambush deep in the forest. You'll be able to meet the Gingerbread Men but they'll attack you on sight and try to maul you with their candy canes.

Right now the game is still about six months out and there's still lots of time for the team to polish things and get the balance just right. Stay tuned to IGN for more information.
