PETA upset with whaling aspect of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag

The anti-animal cruelty organisation known as PETA AKA People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is upset at the whale hunting mini-game in Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, calling it “disgraceful“, according to Venture Beat.

They even issued a statement to the website, explaining their distaste for this particular mini-game, “Whaling – that is, shooting whales with harpoons and leaving them to struggle for an hour or more before they die or are hacked apart while they are still alive – may seem like something out of the history books, but this bloody industry still goes on today in the face of international condemnation, and it’s disgraceful for any game to glorify it. PETA encourages video game companies to create games that celebrate animals – not games that promote hurting and killing them.

While whaling does sound cruel, I can’t help but wonder where PETA were when games like Red Dead Redemption, Far Cry 3 and Assassin’s Creed 3 were released as players could hunt and skin animals for their personal gains in all three games. Either way, Ubisoft has yet to respond to this statement.

Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag was officially announced yesterday and we’ve compiled a neat list of all the information that’s floating about.
