I finally got the Umbra sword today and I was disappointed. Many people mentioned that this is the BEST sword in the whole game ! I really can't understand how this is a good sword.

I mean it has the best normal damage. But thats it ! There is no additional magical damage and soul trap can be easily cast as a spell. I think Goldbrand is a far better sword. And Duskfang/Dawnfang is the best sword in the game.

Duskfang/Dawnfang is available only in Shivering Isles. Before Shivering Isles came out, Umbra was the best. In addition to the decent damage and autocasting soul trap it costs zero endurance to use.

Goldbrand? I never found it.... or maybe I don't remember now. Where did you get it btw?

Usually the equipment you find at higher levels is pretty good and also pretty expensive. However that's one major problem I have with Oblivion. Everything in the game levels up with you. There are no tough monsters or dungeons that you cannot handle or need to level up for. It's pretty n00b friendly but if you're a true RPG fan you'll know what I mean...

There's a mod for the PC (don't remember the name now) that kinda removes this restriction, it's good but not great.

Goldbrand is the sword you get when you complete Boethia's quest (Daedric Lord quest). You have to face 8 different enemies from the other races (other than your race). The quest is ridiculously easy even for me !

The sword does a little less damage than Umbra, but it is light and does 22 fire damage.

I love this game for its beautiful outdoors ! I can just roam the place without any battles and still not get bored.

Frankly I am not a competitive gamer and I get rogered badly on online duels. :( Call of duty 3, Counterstrike, Wolfenstine ET etc. Though that doesn't stop me from enjoying myself with the fluke kills and hearing the guys curse their hearts out ! :P )

So the fact that this is not a tough game means I enjoy it even more. (Even my favourite RPG of all time KOTOR wasn't difficult at all).

I really love the game too, it's very easy to get lost in Cyrodill. I used to spend entire weekends playing and making excuses for not going out.

It's just that when you level up or find some badass equipment it doesn't feel as rewarding as other RPGs...

I've more or less finished the game, so I thought I'd write a review for it. Please note that this is for the Playstation 3 version and not the PC or XBOX 360.

Title : The Elder Scrolls IV: (Game of the year edition)

Platform : PlayStation 3, XBOX 360, PC

Genres : Role Playing.

Maturity Rating : 16+

Format : Blu Ray Disc

Game Rating : * * * *1/2.

Have you ever wondered how the life of a mercenary actually is like? Well, Bethesda Studios has just come out with their brilliant instalment in their Elder Scrolls series which lets you experience that to the full. Welcome to the fourth instalment of the Elder Scrolls; Oblivion. Oblivion lets you explore the massive world of Tamriel with no restraints. There is a main quest, saving the world, but there are a lot of other fun things to do as well. In fact, the other things can be so much fun that you might forget that you have to save the world. In fact, this is what happened to me. I was so busy chasing rats and running after thieves and lost treasures that I completely forgot that I had to go around saving the world.

You start the game as one of the several intelligent races that can be found in Tamriel. I say intelligent because you cannot play as a troll that thinks it’s a gorilla or a troll whose vocabulary is limited to “Graahhhh!”. Each race has its own strengths and weaknesses. In addition to that, you also have to select your birth sign. In the world of Tamriel, your sign actually gives you additional benefits. After you have done all of these, you are unleashed on the world of Tamriel where your main quest is to save the world from the hordes of Oblivion, which is the equivalent to our hell.

Now the game play is simply amazing. There are so many things you have to take care of that it’s easy to forget you are playing a game and not watching a movie. As you move through the beautifully detailed terrains, time will flow taking you from dawn to dusk till dawn. Sometimes it will even rain. As expected, certain things will happen only at certain times. For example, if you want to visit a count or countess, you will have to go between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm else you will miss them. People lock their doors at night so you will have to wait till morning to speak with them, or you can try and pick their locks. If you help people, others who know them will be friendlier towards you. If you try to steal something and someone is watching, then you will find yourself surrounded by guards. I once accidentally picked something up and the next moment, three guards where dragging me to the prison. In a lot of cases, people will not divulge imformation to you if they do not like you. Amazing, isn’t it.

Combat is not very fancy since this game doesn’t revolve around combat. But combat is a little complicated. There are two classes of weapons: blunt and blade. Blade includes swords, daggers and katanas. Blunt includes hammers, maces and axes. Different weapons have different weights. The heavier the weapon, the faster you get tired. The more tired you are, the less damage you will do with each swing. Also, the more you use your weapon, the more it gets damaged and its effectiveness decreases. So you really can’t go swinging wildly. Think real life here! The same is with armour. Armour degrades with every blow you receive, lowering their defensive capabilities. So if your armour is damaged, you’ll need to get it repaired.

You will have a plethora of skills to master. In this game, you don’t level up by gaining experience points. You level up by levelling up your skills. How do you level up your skills? You use them. The more you use a sword, the better you will become at using it. Practice makes perfect! There are combat skills like blade, blunt and there are non-combat skills like smithy, which lets you repair your weapons and armour, or speech craft, which lets you smooth talk people.

There are a huge number of quests in this game. Lot of quests can be activated by talking to people out on the streets. The dialogues are voiced nicely and the expressions on the characters faces are also nicely shown. People actually smile, laugh, pout and frown. Joining certain guilds like the Fighters Guild or the Mages Guild will allow you to access even more quests. There are shadier guilds like the Thieves Guild or the Dark Brotherhood, which is a guild of assassins. So if you don’t like playing goody-two shoes, that’s your place. But be warned, if you commit misdeeds, the Gods will refuse to bless you when you pray at their altars. To top things, you can also get bitten by a vampire and turn into one, then go around biting people and drinking their blood.

The only problem with the game is that it starts of slow, so you can get bored. But if you see yourself through the first few hours, you will find yourself unable to put the game down. Even after you have finished the game, you can replay it with another character. The fun is just never ending.

The “Game of the Year Edition” features two additional adventures; The Knights of the Nine and The Shivering Isles. These two adventures allow you opportunity to more quests, more weapons and more fun.

So if you do not have a copy of it, go grab one.
