Published by: Electronic Arts

Developed by: Crytek Studios -- Budapest

Release Date: December 31, 2008

Genre: First-Person Shooter

In Crysis Warhead, players will don the Nanosuit of Sergeant Sykes, also known as 'Psycho', one of the most memorable characters from Crysis. More brash and aggressive than his Delta Force squadmate Nomad, players will experience Psycho's parallel story during the events of the original game, finding that life on the other side of the island is even more intense and explosive than they ever could have imagined. Luckily, Psycho's Nanosuit is just as capable and he's equipped with an even bigger arsenal of fully customizable weapons and new vehicles, giving players access to the tools they need to dominate any situation.

Crysis Warhead is a parallel story to Crysis, one of the most critically-acclaimed first person shooters and PC games of 2007. The game is first title to be developed at Crytek's Budapest studio, and built on a new, enhanced and optimized version of Crytek's CryENGINE 2 technology.

Crysis Warhead runs smooth on lower-end PC’s with settings on high?

Optimizations made to Crytek’s CryENGINE 2 will allow the upcoming sci-fi shooter follow up Crysis Warhead to run smoothly with high detail settings on cheap PCs, studio CEO Cevat Yerli has claimed.

Specifically, Yerli told German outlet PC Games that a 400 euro (roughly $620) PC could run the title, with high settings enabled, at 30 to 35 frames per second. Curiously, he did not detail the resolution at which this is possible.

Despite having stopped patch support for the original Crysis (PC), Yerli said these optimizations could eventually make their to the first game. “That will take a long time, because the fixes are fairly profound,” he noted. “We are still in the process of the steps, but first we want to conclude Warhead.”

Though even the latest video cards can’t provide a smooth framerate for Crysis at high resolutions with very high detail settings, Crytek is confident that the game’s system requirements did not affect sales.

“Other’s lower perceived hardware requirements did not actually translate to bigger overall sales numbers than Crysis,”business manager Harald Seeley explained earlier this month. “You only have to look at the comparative PC sales volumes of other prominent FPS games which shipped around the same time.”

Due out this fall, Crysis Warhead marks the last of Crytek’s PC-exclusive titles because of piracy woes and the likelihood of higher sales on consoles. In addition to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the company is apparently investigating PSP development.

CryENGINE 2 Presentation

The picture above is from Martin Mittring’s Visionday ‘08 CryENGINE 2 Presentation. This is the same engine that will be used in Warhead. It definitely looks like Crysis, but it looks more refined and real IMO. The question is, did they learn from their first mistake on Crysis? Will Warhead be playable with mid-range computer? Or will it demand a very top of the line computer to run properly?

The presentation is describing all major graphic techniques that are available in the CryEngine2. Here we describe the properties and why they are in the engine in that form. All techniques work well together and provide a good solution for current and near future generation of graphics hardware. We briefly discuss alternatives to clarify why the chosen implementation was the right choice for us.

Crysis Warhead version of CryENGINE 2 has been made more scalable and has, naturally, received more polish and tuning. Detailed info on CE2 will be released as the due date of Crysis Warhead gets closer.
