Dragon Quest IX First Look

The Dragon Quest series is coming to the Nintendo DS, and we've got a look at the trailer from the 2007 Square Enix Party.

MAKUHARI--At the 2007 Square Enix Party here at the Makuhari Messe Convention Center just outside of Tokyo, the company showed off the first trailer for the upcoming installment in the incredibly popular Dragon Quest series: Dragon Quest IX. While it might seem surprising that the ninth game in the best-selling series is coming to the Nintendo DS, considering the handheld's incredible popularity here in Japan, it seems only fitting.

The trailer for the game was shown in one of the main video stages at the tail end of a long line of trailers coming from Square Enix and, though it was brief, it was well worth the roughly 40-minute wait. In the trailer, four characters are introduced: a yellow-and-green-clad magic user, a turban-wearing swordsman bearing a curved blade, a woman wearing what looks to be a pink-and-purple getup straight out of I Dream of Jeannie, and a traditional warrior wearing a medieval helmet and armor and wielding a shield and sword. In one segment, we saw an inventory screen for the medieval knight, where it appears you'll be able to outfit him with various armor and weapons simply by dragging new accessories onto his body.

After a few shots of the characters running around doing their adventuring thing, we also got a quick look at the turn-based combat. Though details are few and far between, it seems as though the action of the characters will take place on the upper screen of the DS, while important information such as character hit points, magic points, and action controls for combat will be displayed on the lower screen. Longtime Dragon Quest aficionados will recognize many of the enemies shown during the combat sequences--knights, hammer-wielding chickens, and the obligatory blue slimes will all make their way into DQ IX, along with a plethora of bosses to battle as well.

As with older games in the series, one of the high points of the DQ IX trailer was the bright, hand-drawn feel to the characters, enemies, and environments. It's a fine-looking game that should appeal to longtime fans and perhaps attract some new ones, too. While it's true that the DQ series is much more popular in Japan than in the States, we're curious to see how this game progresses over the coming months; perhaps a handheld format is just what the series needs to get a stronger foothold in North America. The game is due for release later this year in Japan, and no word has yet been given on a US release.

Maybe. Because I loved what SE did with FF XII. Simply adore their new battle system. However, DQ is steeped in tradition and the Japanese aren't fond of people fiddling with their beloved traditions.

yea you can't argue with half the country's population when it comes to their most beloved franchise.lol

Lol, yeah. Just think, after so much time spent in development they switched back to Turn_based combat. Lol, gotta appreciate the Japs.

if the first version was far into development then poor developers they must have cried themselves to sleep when they first heard about it.

Dragon Quest 9 Release Date Confirmed

dq9238f07cc7.jpg

Popular RPG will hit Japanese stores March 2009.

Western Dragon Quest fans, get ready for some speculation. Dragon Quest 9 has been dated in Japan, which should at least give you a tentative idea of when it might hit western markets.

Kotaku is reporting that DQ9 will be arriving in Japan sometime in March 2009, two and a half years after Square Enix shocked the world by announcing the game for the Nintendo DS. As with still distant Final Fantasy 13, SE seems intent on getting this one right. Unfortunately, it won't be playable at next week's Tokyo Game Show.

So what does this mean for westerners? Well, if the Nintendo DS Dragon Quest 4 remake and the PS2's Dragon Quest 8 are any guide, then DQ9 should be arriving on western shores sometime in March 2010. Can you wait that long, DQ fans? Or will you be importing this one?

Cheers

DS Fanboy: Character customization and more in Dragon Quest IX

I've you've been passing the days wondering just what your main man (or chick) in Dragon Quest IX will look like, well, uh, keep wondering. Unless you already have an image fixed in your mind, we can't help you. But we can point you to Famitsu, where they have a pretty extensive look at the character customization in the latest from the long-running franchise. Bald? No problem. Pigtails? Done. Crazy, coked-up eyeballs? Hey, it's your game. We're just pointing you to the screenshots.

You've gotta wonder if you're stuck with some of these crazier expressions throughout the game. Angry smirking face is less funny in a sad moment. Or is it funnier? That's up to you, too.
