How good is an LCD tv as a monitor

Firstly, a big HI!!! :) to everbody!

I'm from Bangalore and this is my first post here. Currently pursuing my engineering studies and have recently been bitten by the CONSOLE BUG!!

Next week, I'll be purchasing the console (which one is still debatable, but I'm 90% inclined for the PS3 and this after a month of HARD research :ko2: )

The Sony dealer located close to my home says the PS3 comes with an HDMI cable included, so that's good news.

My old CRT display is on its last legs, so a new monitor purchase is inevitable. However considering the eccentricities of the PS3's connectivity, I've decided to play it safe and buy a SONY BRAVIA V-series 26" LCD TV to go with the console.

Obviously, I am intent on using this TV as my monitor display through the VGA input.

I would like to know if this whole idea might present any problems, and what about playing Blu-Ray movies on this TV, will there be any glitches with regard to audio and video?

Hoping to hear from people around here... :)

Hi, Good more people from bangalore are getting PS3. I got the same TV and it is awesome as far as gaming is concerned.

If you are planning to use it as a computer monitor then it is not that good.

If it is primarily for watching TV and Gaming it is very good specially for watching movies of your PS3 (Using the HDMI cable ofcourse).

I have currently connected my PS3 to the TV using the HDMI cable and I have not faced any problem (Using it for about 4 months).

PS - Where exactly in Bangalore do you stay?

well, the truth is it'll be used more often as a monitor than a TV. Is it really that bad to be used as a monitor.... Then I'll have to go through the LCD monitor HDCP/DVI/HDMI/RCA/Optical debate ALL over again!!!

Frankly, if it does a good enough job as a monitor, I'll be happy... what do you say?

I use it for gaming more often then watching TV and I find it pretty good.

If you are getting a PS3, it is a good idea to get this TV rather then a LCD Monitor.

Everytime I tried connecting my PC to the TV I only get 1024 by 768 resolution, but I am used to 1280 by 1024, so never tried using it as a monitor after that.

Welcome to GI.com. You could goto eZone kormangala and ask the sales guy over there to give you PC connectivity demo and then you will be in a better position to make the call.

BTW, we bunch of gamers are meeting tomorrow in bangalore. You are welcome to join us and may be we all will go and hunt the Monitor/TV for ya.

I bought my PS3 at Sony World on Ring Road and they were the only Sony World ready to show a demo. Not sure if they will show a demo on PC connectivity (You can call them and try out. Phone number available on Sony website).

Dude you wanna join us tomorrow?

Nah not possible this week or next. Got some relatives coming over tomorrow and are going to stay here for a week.

Why don't u go for 24" monitor instead. There are couple of them which have hdmi and component connectivity. Apart from the usual DVI. The best part about it would be Full HD gaming :D. 1080p baby. Or u could just use a hdmi to dvi converter with ur ps3..... Might work out a lil cheaper than the tv too.

Remember, the lcd tv is only 720p

Yeah, I enquired about the BenQ FP241W. It has everything. But costs 46,000/-

Will try for a 22" monitor with HDMi input. Otherwise, can I get a HDMI-DVI cable in Bangalore? if so, where?

as far as audio goes, Logitech's M50 and X-530 are compatible with the PS3, but I need to get the adapter separately. Again, is this available in the market in Bangalore?

^ search the forums for the LG226WTQ - an affordable (~14k) and brilliant 22" LCD monitor with DVI (and HDCP) - works flawlessly with both the ps3 (you will need a HDCP-DVI cable, ~400 bucks)/360 (dragon VGA cable, ~400 bucks) and doubles up as a TV using an external RF/Composite to VGA converter (~1500 bucks)!

Thanks, I'll head out next week and see what I can find... Still hoping to get an affordable HDMI monitor, but if not, then this LG sounds good...

Dude it is the limitation of your tv or else your video card on PC.

I get 1360*768(720p) and 1920*!080(1080i) on my tv while connected using HDMI-DVI cable.

I have got a 8800GT card which is a very powerful card though...
