CastleVania: Order of Ecclesia

IGN Review

Closing Comments

This is the part of the review where we'd normally make our final call to arms, or throw some quotes up for readers to highlight for years to come, but I'm not going to do it. I can't say this is a better game than Dawn of Sorrow, because, truthfully, I'm not sure that it is. Order of Ecclesia is a stronger effort than Portrait of Ruin, and for those that can go into it with the understanding that it's a much harder, less focused (at least for the first half of the game), but still amazingly entertaining Castlevania product, it's a must-buy. The animation is better than ever, the music is top notch and some of the best we've heard on DS, the new style works wonderfully, the Glyph system and two-handed, magic-based combat works like a dream, and there's more motivation in Shanoa's story than most Castlevania titles. That said, it still isn't a hugely story-focused game, the title gets off to an odd foot with small areas that can be completed 100% in their first pass, there's a distinct lack of in-level props or "ideas" that keep the product going until the second half, and very little exploration that would hook new gamers to the Castlevania series if they aren't already veterans. Once you push through to the second half -- or just trust this review when it says it's all worth it in the end -- there are many unforgettable moments and impressive boss battles to be had, but this is a Castlevania that breaks the convention, and maybe goes a bit too far down that road from time to time. Is it an amazing game? Absolutely. Stronger than Portrait of Ruin, Circle of the Moon, and Harmony of Dissonance? Is this reviewer's opinion, yes. The best on DS, or top in the series? I just don't think so.

8.5 Presentation

The writing is pretty strong, the style is a huge turn for the better, and above all else it's classic Symphony of the Night source material at its best.

9.5 Graphics

If there's better 2D art on DS, it hasn't come around yet. Amazing pixel work, impressive animations, hordes of new enemies, and a crammed package filled with new effects and hardware trickery.

9.5 Sound

Beautiful music, lots of VO, and some great sound effects make this a serious audio showcase on DS. Japanese tracks are included, as is a "surround" headphone mode. More VO for story is needed.

9.0 Gameplay

The new "magic to attack" system is great, and adds strategy. The game is much harder as well, with some impressive bosses and difficult enemies. The pace is a bit off though.

9.0 Lasting Appeal

The first half can be a bit odd, but the reward is an amazing back half. Boss Rush seems to be single-player only though, and the added bonus mode isn't as entertaining as some previous efforts.

9.0

Outstanding OVERALL

(out of 10 / not an average)

I was wondering when you were going to create this topic :)

I've been "had"-ing it right after launch and already beaten the primary story mode. Fiddling around with villager quests and also plan to play some more of

Albus Mode

and maybe Hard Mode (just for kicks).

Make no mistake, this game will punish you. But heaven forsake me if this isn't the most technically impressive 2D Castlevania game yet.

You better play it mate , that title seriously made us lose our lives here , SO DAMN FRIKKIN ADDICTIVE.

Well , those were the glory days and I cant forget them in my life.

Also , some of the majestic piece of scripts in the industry till now.

This is one of the titles that we guys here when switched on , DO NOT GET UP FOR AT LEAST THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.

if you have a DS , you must checkout Aria of Sorrow ( direct prequel to DOS on the DS ) , Circle of The Moon and Harmony Of Dissonance

They are backward Compatible and a MUST BUY for EVERY Castlevanian.

P.S. We were SHOCKED to see that Alucard image @ E3 on Nextgen and jumping in joy for the next 2 days :(

BTW is this game as hard if not more than circle of the moon?

It's definitely hovering around that area, but it's also been like forever since I last remembered even playing it. One factor worth pointing out are just how much health the most basic of enemy types will carry the first time you encounter them, and there are times where you'll run into no less than three enemy types (small, aerial and/or heavy) in a single large room - and those types WILL have multiples. I recommend doing some rudimentary grinding at the very start, to ease you into things better.

Another factor that adds to the difficulty is that the most effective items (particularly for healing, since having to restore MP is pretty useless considering how fast it recharges by itself) as well as various clothing accessories aren't readily available to you in the beginning either. First you'll have to search out for the villager who'll produce the item for you, gather the materials for him/her so that he or she will be able to make it, then have it placed for sale in the department store. Tedious and nonessential? You be the judge!

oh alrite then and yeah lol that was Richter Belmont @ Drac. The thing with the patchetic voice acting is the hardware and most of all being a sidescroller.

They cant just zoom in for lip sync can they ?

But if you look at LOI and COD on the Playstation2 you wont have that.

Also if you got some time try out CV Bloodlines on the NES ( that dialouge of Richter you just said is from Bloodlines and has been in SOTN just to continue the script ).

CV Judgement & FF MOTLE are the primary reasons I'm getting the Wii ASAP.

Yea,should try the NES ones too,the only one i've beaten from the NES era is Simon's Quest back in the day and that was because it had some RPG elements in it,loved it back then ,dunno how it holds up now though.

btw getting hyped even for CV:Judgement just shows how much of a castlevania nut you are :)

P.S. How cool would it be to use our Thunderstorms , Soul Steals and Dark Metamorphisis'es and every other Mana in a fighter ? :(
