Killzone is one of those unlucky franchises that has always made gaming headlines for all the wrong reasons. The original title was billed as Sony’s answer to HALO and rode on tremendous pre-release hype before it fell flat on in its face on release. The sequel, Killzone 2 also made a controversial debut when Sony tried to pass of a CIVG target render as actual gameplay footage for its then upcoming PlayStation 3. Ever since that infamous trailer, Amsterdam based developers, Guerilla Games, have been under tremendous pressure to deliver, and having played a big chunk of the single player campaign recently, I can safely say that Killzone 2 has all the makings of a fine, fine shooter. If the game’s second half is as good as its first, then Killzone 2 has a great chance to deliver on all the promises the developers made half a decade ago.

With its alternate take on world politics and war, hilarious B-movie style presentation and lightning fast gameplay, the Red Alert series has always been a rather unique branch of the Command & Conquer universe. The first two games developed by the now defunct Westwood Studios are now RTS classics. So when EA announced the next title in the series, RTS fans couldn’t have been happier. It’s been almost 8 years since the last game in the series hit shelves and we couldn’t wait to get back into action, comrade!
Red Alert 3, now developed in-house by EA, features pretty much all of the series’ trademarks and instantly feels familiar right from the menu screens to the thumping background music. As expected, the story is totally over the top material. The Soviets travel back in time and assassinate Einstein in order to stop the Allies from becoming a super power thanks to his research. However, the results are not quite what the Soviets would have expected. The Allies are subdued a little but a new threat emerges from the east. Due to the halt in the Allies’ advancement, the Empire of the Rising Sun (the game’s third playable faction) have become a considerable threat and are now hell bent on taking over the world. The Empire’s invasion sets the stage for the campaign.

After hectic back and forth discussions over the past few weeks, the IndianVideoGamer staff has finally arrived at the final list of nominees for the 20 categories in the IndianVideoGamer Game of the Year 2008. And heading the list of nominees are Gears of War 2, sequel to the massively successful Xbox 360 breakthrough hit, and Call of Duty: World at War, Treyarch’s often doubted and even ridiculed return to World War II.
While both Gears of War 2 and Call of Duty: World at War racked up five nominations each, following them with four nominations each are indie XBLA hit Braid, Fallout 3, FIFA 09, LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and, surprisingly, Pure. The 20 categories, however, don’t include the Overall Game of the Year category, for which we have something special planned. And we should have a few prizes to give away as well.
January!

The handheld/portable video game system has entertained generations of school kids and commuters. From the cheap Tetris knock-offs available at train stations to the expensive PSP – they all offer a great gaming experience on the go. 2008 saw some jewels on both the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation Portable. Continuing our countdown, here’s the IndianVideoGamer Year in Review: Handhelds:
NINTENDO DS
The World Ends With You
Square-Enix is known for making fantasy RPGs with emotional, engaging storylines, turn-based battles and long cutscenes. Well, take out the fantasy and turn-based battle and you get The World Ends With You. This RPG is one of the best games to come out of the Squenix stable, and definitely one of the most innovative. It takes place in a modern Tokyo and gives a not-so-sly nod to the pop culture infesting the youth. There is a deep and engaging storyline, coupled that with a jazzy art direction and funky music – the makings of a great RPG. Where it really shines is the battle system, which uses the DS to its full capability. You have to control two players simultaneously using the buttons and stylus, and even juggle combos between the players to attack enemies. If you have a DS, this is a must buy. If you don’t have a DS, buy it to play this game.

When Crystal Dynamics were handed the Tomb Raider franchise after Angel of Darkness, I doubt even the most fanatical Lara fans were troubled. The franchise was at rock bottom, how worse could it be? Fans had lost faith and critics had written it off as a series that died with the PS1. Crystal Dynamics, therefore, had a lot to prove and, in Legend, they delivered a Tomb Raider game that could finally stand up to the originals as a worthy sequel.
Anniversary was a reminder of why the series was (and is) iconic. But with their reputation firmly made, I always figured Underworld was where Crystal Dynamics would begin to build up the series again. So how did it turn out?

It is amusing to me that in the annals of video gaming, racing games based on actual world series events don’t do very well critically or commercially. If you take a look at the top selling racing games across generations, they have usually been fictional amalgamations of a variety of racing classes encompassing a wide range of vehicles.
And it’s not that bestsellers are arcade games that eschew the true sim experience in favour of fun and easy to access gameplay, as can be testified by the roaring success of the Gran Turismo and the Forza Motorsport series. Even in an arcade tilted series like Need for Speed, most critics hail Porsche Unleashed as the one of the best games in the series.
