X-COM reborn as third person cover based shooter, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified

X-COM, the troubled first-person shooter that’s been stuck in development hell for the longest time has now resurfaced as a third-person, cover based shooter called The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. The game is being developed by BioShock 2 developer 2K Marin and is scheduled for an August 23rd, 2013 release on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Here’s a quick description from the press release:

Set in 1962 at the height of the Cold War, The Bureau tells the origin story of the clandestine XCOM organisation’s first encounter with a mysterious and devastating enemy. Originally established as America’s covert defence against the Soviet Union, The Bureau must adapt and overcome a threat unlike anything the world has faced before. As special agent William Carter, players will call the shots and pull the trigger, leading their squad of agents in the high-stakes secret war for humanity’s survival. Paramount to repelling the outside threat is The Bureau’s ability to cover-up the enemy’s existence in order to prevent worldwide panic.

It looks like The Bureau: XCOM Declassified will be more of a tactical shooter as opposed to its run-and-gun contemporaries. What’s surprising is that it won’t offer any sort of multiplayer or co-operative play.
