^ ^ Lol, i actually love the game. Its that damn mission which i hate. I think story is really engaging and the graphics are pretty smooth flowing.

There are other minor things that i hate about the game, i.e those a*s's in the R&D dept. And out of no where they throw you into this ultra tough battle, just like that. And im like wtf.

Whats wrong tith the R&D dept.? They are the reason you get to upgrade your stuff, yes?

hahaha. Not really. VC is primarily a strategy RPG. So you ahve a mixture of commandos type strategy, yo have FPS elements like head shots and stuff and you have RPG elements where you have to collect enough experience and gold to level up your tropps and their weapons.

Game Review

Valkyria Chronicles

What is Valkyria Chronicles, you may ask. It is not a mere game. It is an epic tale; a tale of love, friendship, hardship and sacrifice; a tale which not only lets you don the mantle of a soldier fighting a war, but one which also shows you the true face of war.

Story: 10/10

It is the year EC 1935, when the second Europa War ignites between two giants; the Empire in the east and the Atlantic Federation in the west. It is the age of Ragnite, a material which can do everything, right from healing wounds to powering tanks. Naturally, it is coveted by everyone, more so by the Empire whose army is huge. Thus it invades the neutral but small kingdom of Gallia, whose soil is rich in Ragnite.

To defend its nation, young men and women are conscripted into the militia and sent out to do battle. This is the tale of Welkin Gunther, a young man who wasn’t nothing more than to finish his education and take up a teaching post. He is put in charge of Squad 7 of the Galian militia. Squad 7 finds itself home to various people; a young baker Alica Melchiott, Bridget ‘Rosie’ Stark, who dreams of being on the stage singing, Largo, whose passion for vegetables is boundless, and many such rag tags.

But, it is not as if all is well. Squad 7 has to deal with its own problems when many refuse to work with ‘Darkscens’, a race of people shunned by many. It kinda reminds you of Lagaan, where some people refuse to work with ‘Kachra’ because he was an untouchable. There are veterans from the First Europa War who have trouble being placed under a ‘rookie’.

Valkyria Chronicles also shows you that war is not always about good and evil. Men fight mostly because they have been ordered to, or to earn a few coins for their family. There are scenes where you see a wounded Imperial soldier, crying out for his mother in his dying breath, or squads, noth Galian and Imperial, crying over their comrades’s death. Valkyria Chronicles is filled with many such moments, which takes it beyond the realm of the run-of-the-mill war game.

Gameplay 9/10

This is in sense, a strategy RPG containing some FPS elements, which makes for a very interesting game.

Your squad is divided into the following types; Scout, Shocktrooper, Lancer, Engineer, Sniper and Tank. Before the commencement of a mission, you will be asked to position your squad. Now, you can take only a limited number of people into the battlefield, so you will have to really think and then do the deployment. Once that is done, the map will be displayed.

You can select any unit and then move it around the field. If you come in range of artillery fire, you will be shot at. Pressing R1 will switch the mode to ‘target mode’. During this time, the enemy will not fire at you. You will go into FPS more with cross-hairs and all. Pressing R1/L1 will cycle through available targets. Once you lock on to a target, you will be show the number of shots required to kill it, as well as the number of shots you have. Shooting an enemy in the head brings down the number by quite a bit.

There are two point types; Action Points and Command Points. Every time you select a unit, it consumes 1 CP for a non-tank unit and 2 CP for a tank unit. Once you have selected it, moving it will consume action points. Once you run out of action points, you cannot move any further. Once your CP runs out, the enemy phase will start where they will do unto you what you did unto them, if you left any alive, that is.

The terrain is also put to good effect. Taking cover behind sandbags / barricades will reduce the damage taken from bullets and headshots. Crawling through the grass will make it harder for the enemy to see you.

Now, each unit has different amounts of AP, defense and damage. It will be up to you to decide which unit to deploy where and how to make best use of it in a battle.

Like other RPGs, winning battles net you gold and Exp points. The amount varies depending upon how well you performed in the battle. You are assigned ranks A to D, A being the highest. You can go to the squad 7 headquarters to level up your troops and purchase weapon and tank upgrades. Note that you level a type, not individual unit. This means that leveling up Scouts will level up each and every member.

Graphics: 9/10

The whole game looks gorgeous. The game looks absolutely like a manga come to life. Beautiful, vibrant colours are abound in the game. Frame rate remains constant with no stutters even when you are weaving your way through enemy cross-fire. The character models have been sketched beautifully, with each squad 7 member having looks to match their personality.

The only gripe I have is the signs of “Kaboom” and “rat-ta-ta-ta-“ and “Brrrrrrrrrr..” signs accompanying the sounds, but some people do like that.

Sound: 9/10

The music is superb, ranging from soft and soothing to heavy beats and furious music. Each piece is well suited to its intended environment. Small details have been taken care of; like different sounds for bullets hitting flesh, helmets, sandbags, etc. The sound changes if you run on concrete as opposed to if you move on grass.

The voice acting is top notch. Each and every dialogue is delivered with emotion and carries that punch needed to make you feel the impact.

My verdict:

One word – hubbahubba. This is a game to own if you are a PS3 owner.

nice review,

loved the game but haven't finished it yet,i'm still in chapter 16.

One thing that kinda broke the game for me personally was the way the story was told, the book mode felt like it took away from the atmosphere and kinda ended up uneven when it came to pacing.Ofcourse it might only be me.

I am yet to see one person who hates this game. When people mention PS3 games in console wars why is this never mentioned?

I am now seriously thinking of getting this one but I have one question, what is the length of the SP mode?
