Heavy Rain-The Origami Killer

Developer:Quantic Dream

Publisher:SONY

Genre:Adventure

Platform:PS3

Release date: Q1 2010

Details about the story and gameplay of Heavy Rain itself remain scarce. It is known that the game is not a sequel to Fahrenheit, but a completely new game, with new story and new characters.[3] Director David Cage noted that Heavy Rain "will be a very dark film noir thriller with mature themes", without any supernatural elements. The game will feature a story that is interactively "bendable", similarly to Fahrenheit. It's been told by the creators, that "the character control mechanism is an essential part in playing Heavy Rain", and is different from the system used in Fahrenheit. The player will be able to control different characters in the game.

Quantic Dream buys mo-cap tech for PS3 exclusive

From Gamesindustry.biz

New title requires four month's worth of capture

Acclaimed Fahrenheit developer Quantic Dream has bought the latest motion capture technology from Vicon for its top secret PlayStation 3 exclusive.

The studio has already been installed at Quantic Dream, with the developer hard at work on four month's worth of motion capture for the Sony title.

"Our objective is to make this media a mainstream entertainment form with high creative expectations," commented Guillaume de Fondaumière, Co-CEO at Quantic Dream.

"To do so, we have invented our own format called 'interactive cinema' in which realistic, believable characters play a central role. To us, the only way to reach the level of quality we were targeting for the animation of our characters was to use Vicon motion capture," he said.

Sony announced the PS3 project with Quantic Dream in July this year. The developer is also hiring out the new studio to other development teams.

"Demand has been immediate and we have actually already started to rent the system to high-profile video game and advertising clients. Our new studio is fully installed and is functioning almost every day either for complex full body or facial captures," added Fondaumière.

Whatever little news comes out about this title just makes me anticipate its release all the more.

"There is no uncanny valley any more," declares French developer

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=31603

French developer Quantic Dream has told GamesIndustry.biz that it intends to secure some of the biggest names in Hollywood for its upcoming PlayStation 3 title, currently known as Heavy Rain.

With a new in-house motion capture studio, the Fahrenheit developer believes that it can successfully portray actor's emotions – not just physical movement – with actors now interested in the script and story behind the game rather than worrying about the technology.

"We had a meeting with Leonardo DiCaprio in 2004 and we tried to convince him to play in one of our future games – at the time we had Fahrenheit to show him," detailed Guillaume de Fondaumière, co-founder of Quantic Dream, in an exclusive interview published today.

"He liked it very much, but he politely explained to us that we still were not at the level that he'd expect the technology to be at in order to give us his time and be able to portray his performance. Today, it's very different. We're talking with class A actors. These Hollywood actors are asking us about the scenario and the stories as the technical aspects are taken care of.

"We've been able to demonstrate that we're capable of portraying the performance. They are asking, "what's the subject matter, what's the role?"" he said.

Quantic Dream unveiled a tech demo for Heavy Rain at E3 in 2006 – a screen test featuring one virtual actor called The Casting (pictured) – and the studio is confident it has now surpassed the impressive facial animation on display during that five minute demo.

"When we showed The Casting everyone agreed it was nice and it really showed that there was a potential for creating virtual actors, but we're still at this frontier where we don't totally suspend disbelief. We still have this uncanny valley to bridge," offered Fondaumière.

"But today, I can officially announce that there is no uncanny valley any more, not in real-time.

"With our next project we're going to demonstrate with hundreds of characters that we can have extremely realistic characters that not only move like real actors but express themselves through facial animations and speech like real actors, and are extremely accurate to the actors they are portraying," he added.

On Locations:

"I don't want to do a big free-roaming city like GTA, because the flow of the story will then be hard to control. Nevertheless, I do want to incorporate big sets, with a crowd, heavy populated areas like a mall and a subway are going to be in there. Of course, the gameplay has got to make use of that aspect too."

On Graphics:

"People will be surprised. Internal (Sony's) feedback on graphics has been great. This is going to be a truly next-gen game. But still, we want to do something unique with the graphics, going beyond just making the most photorealistic world we can."

On Gameplay:

"With the release of Fahrenheit, we gave the adventure genre a new grammar. We brought new ways into the genre, new words if you want to see it like that, a new vocabulaire. With Heavy Rain, where going to expand on that same grammar."

On Story:

"Heavy Rain is about normal people that have landed in extraordinary situations. I wanted a much more personal story. The first thing that came to my mind, as a father of two little boys, was that the main theme should simply be a father's love for his son. This is not a game about saving the princess or the world. Its purely about a father's love."

"The main story will revolve around 4 different characters, and we're putting the spotlight on their perceptions. The question 'what is good and what is evil' is the key here, that will be just a matter of viewpoint...I believe heavily in moral choices, I'm going to use them A LOT. They're not about being good or bad, but about finding the right balance."
