Micro Transactions Discussion Mega Thread

Recommended Posts

Well, I don't know where else this can go (can't find a thread for Fortnite or The Apple Thread in GC either), but Epic Games has filed a lawsuit against Apple.

Here's a basic timeline of events:

Normally, I wouldn't bother, but I read the first few pages of the lawsuit and it's pretty 'entertaining' in a way. Give it a read.

Epic of all companies should understand that 30% is the platform fee, same as what they have been paying to MS, Sony....

This was one of most mindless revolt.

And these greedy toads, Epic, once raised the Unreal engine licencing unilaterally, leading to one of the publishers dropping it's use.

Don't see any way Epic can get away with this. Any other company would have to pay up, they will too.

Maybe they thought Apple will let this slide because Fortnite is making them a ton of money, and they'd be willing to decrease the 30% cut.

Epic has no case here. Unless the popularity of iOS goes down drastically, forcing apple to amend their TOS, all these guys will have to take the L and sulk in a corner.

Pretty much everything is free these days and money is made from microtransactions and subscriptions. Epic wants the platform holders to forgo it. I don't see Apple just letting go off billions on the table.

Besides, why don't they revolt against Sony, MS and Nintendo too? Its not exactly a new issue and they've been making games for years.

Their cut is not flat 30% for everything like Apple. For eg 1000 V-bucks on PSN/XBL cost $8, same as Epic's own store. On app store it costs $10. This is what the lawsuit is about.

Nope. That's the new price cut. 20% discount on V-Bucks.

What EPIC did was they added direct payment option letting players to buy V-bucks for $8 from EPIC itself and cutting out middleman (and the fee that EPIC has to pay to Apple or Google).

Currently, when using Apple and Google payment options, Apple and Google collect a 30% fee, and the up to 20% price drop does not apply. If Apple or Google lower their fees on payments in the future, Epic will pass along the savings to you.

They don't want to pay 30% cut while cutting V-bucks price by 20%.

Epic enabled a feature in its app which was not reviewed or approved by Apple, and they did so with the express intent of violating the App Store guidelines regarding in-app payments that apply to every developer who sells digital goods or services.

Epic agreed to the App Store terms and guidelines freely and we’re glad they’ve built such a successful business on the App Store. The fact that their business interests now lead them to push for a special arrangement does not change the fact that these guidelines create a level playing field for all developers and make the store safe for all users. We will make every effort to work with Epic to resolve these violations so they can return Fortnite to the App Store.

Quote

The open Android ecosystem lets developers distribute apps through multiple app stores. For game developers who choose to use the Play Store, we have consistent policies that are fair to developers and keep the store safe for users. While Fortnite remains available on Android, we can no longer make it available on Play because it violates our policies. However, we welcome the opportunity to continue our discussions with Epic and bring Fortnite back to Google Play.

Epic want's to use Apple and Google's storefront, but doesn't want to pay them for it. Instead, they want to sell their micro transactions at a discounted price, which actually equals 10% more profit for Epic.

What EPIC did/doing is scumming as shite.

You can still load up V-bucks cheap from the webstore through Safari. This is how I used to grab magazine subs because they used to be cheaper than buying directly via IAP. Apple has always been anal about IAP and one click purchases, even back when the only thing they sold were iTunes songs.

Yep, they basically decided to show the players that if these storefronts weren't there, the customers would be saving money.

epic-direct-pay-google-play-store-2045x9

Obviously, it was totally clear that they anticipated being banned from both storefronts after this update. You can't just have a provocative trailer and lawsuits in the matter of an hour or so.

This.

they effectively want gplay/AppStore to give the discount they are advertising as their own.

Hope Epic wins this suit. At least they've brought to light how hypocritical Apple is with its own mission statement against IBM and what its doing today.

Every rebel takes on the characteristics of the big bad he was fighting once he becomes big/dominant/takes power.

Works for the smoll startup vs incumbent big business, small guerilla rebel leader group vs big bad goverment etc.

Stalin was once a 2rs bankrobber shaking his fist impotently at the chad Tsarist Russia, and their secret police, and army oppressing teh people.

When he became the bossman of Soviet Russia he did mostly the same things.

Google  was doing DoNt bE eViL jhumlas when it was smaller, even pulling out of China because censorship was too much, and it was conflicting with muh values muh principles and all.

Today they are continuing to try to make a Chinese censorship compliant search engine, at the time when China is pretty much the BIG BAD in public perception, and their employees have been protesting over said cheeni search engine

Apple is no exception.

Btw Epic will lose this suit i think, and it will have repercussions since they have got the boot from the mobile market altogether now :/

I can tell you  if Epic wins this, Mobile Gaming/App business will get fked.

The kind of frauds which will happen in IAP,  will make people to ask developers to go back to payment system by Apple/Google.

Today, if you or your kid makes an accidental purchase on Apple, they reverse it for you in matter of minutes, your CC information is absolutely safe.

And let's be real, Epic is a very small fry in Mobile gaming, there are companies who are in this business for decades.
There are companies like Supercell, Playrix, King, Zynga...who make a lot more money than Epic makes with Fortnight. They never had issues with Apple/Google taking cuts, because they knew that what Apple/Google can give them in return, which is worth more than that money.

also, that ppl trust google/apple with their cc info, not the individual vendors themselves.  A good amount of funds has gone into building those platforms and the continuous effort it takes them to keep it clean etc., , Epic just wants to use all the good that the storefronts offer, all the work they've done to make it trustworthy and punt them on payout, while claiming to be a victim.  They are not in the right here, IMO !
