sony would ask for too much money imo....y dont u go to palika or sumwhere and get it fixed....it would cost way less...and the ps2 is pretty old and stable, so u can be assured tht they will be able to fix it properly...

if u want, u can also get it modded....ps2 doesnt have any hardware issues and works fine even with the mod..... i mean, since u are gonna open up yr console, and the warranty is also over (4 yrs old)...so might as well pay some more and mod the thing....

ps - where are u frm??

one DVD with multiple movies = lowered resolution and/or bitrate = dont waste your time.

rent the movies from your local library instead and then google for dvdshrink OR "dvd decrypter"

DVDs that appear to 'play' perfectly can still be damaged - even if your drive cant read a single bit correctly it will report a crc error - a dvd player will simply stutter or skip that frame, which might not be visually noticeable - each second of video is made up of multiple frames (24/30)

ps: try using a brute force copying tool that can insert dummy data into a file when it encounters read errors - the integrity of a vob file wont be too affected with a few errors here and there.

pps: i'm bored now, so post more interesting questions.
