Amazon Offering Massive Blu-ray Buy One, Get One Free

From Kotaku

_________________________________________________________________

While it's not strictly gaming news, PS3 owners will rejoice at some extra goodness on top of this week's Unreal Tournament 3 headshot sundae. Because Amazon is offering a 115-title buy one, get one free sale on Blu-ray movies. Usually these offers consist of a a couple of westerns, discs 2 & 5 of a 7-disc miniseries, and that racing movie we all got free with the PS3 a long time ago. This sale includes big movies like Casino Royale, 300, March of the Penguins, Wild Things (Unrated Edition), Full Metal Jacket, Donnie Brasco...oh man, lots of good stuff here. It's like they want me to rebuy my entire DVD collection or something. We have all 115 titles after the jump if you prefer to search outside of Amazon's sale pages. Otherwise, good hunting.

Because of the stupid region restrictions on UMD movies. I have a Region 3 PSP, but most of the movies I have access to are either Region1 or 2 UMDs :ranting:

Microsoft: users don’t want to own downloadable movies

From Ars Technica

________________________________________________________

While the HD DVD and Blu-ray war continues to rage, the downloadable and on-demand video industries continue to mount a quiet offensive as the possible successor to the DVD format. Though Microsoft and Sony are both beginning to integrate these services into their consoles, Microsoft has made some interesting comments regarding downloadable video in the wake of the international launch of the Video Marketplace. According to Microsoft, users aren't interested in buying downloadable movies, but simply in renting them.

When questioned by news outlet VideoGamer.com about the availability of purchasable video content on the European Video Marketplace, Microsoft's Robin Burrows commented that the company had no plans to do so:

The research that we have showed that our audience is an audience that wants to rent movies through their Xbox 360. And if you want to buy something a lot of people want to buy it on DVD and have the physical media right now. That's a market that's very healthy and will continue to be so. Obviously we provide an HD DVD accessory that plays to that market and continues to buy the HD format.

Also confirmed in the interview was the content focus of the European Video Marketplace. While the United States has enjoyed movies and TV shows, the European marketplace will be focusing on movies and music videos.

While the merits of the HD DVD and Blu-ray formats can be debated endlessly, perhaps what's most telling about this statement is the question it raises: if users don't want to own downloaded videos, will downloadable content platforms ever become a true replacement for physical media?
