From IGN:

3D Dot Game Heroes is set in the Kingdom of Dotnia. This world was once made up of 2D sprite art like something out of an old school game. However, wanting to attract more people to the kingdom, the king decided to use technology to make everything 3D. This is where something goes horribly wrong, although just what that is has yet to be specified.

Despite the retro theme, the game does look impressive technically. It's being developed by Silicon Studio, a developer who worked with From on PSP's Onore no Shinzuru Michi wo Yuke, but who also does middle ware.

In line with the visual style, 3D Dot Game Heroes has some traditional RPG themes. The game's background story involves six magic orbs which were stolen by a demon of darkness, who was then defeated by a brave swordsman and sealed away using the combined power of the orbs. You play as the grandchild of that brave swordsman, and you're tasked with saving the world.

PS3center.net: 3D Dot Game Heroes coming to the US

Considering the industy's tendency to hype big announcements, it's rather surprising to see a PS3 exclusive announcement come from a simple tweet. However, Sony has done just that and confirmed From Software's Zelda clone, 3D Dot Game Heroes, will be coming to the US. Commenting from their twitter account, Sony announced "No need to import - 3D Dot Game Heroes for PS3 is DEFINITELY coming to NA! Spread the word, more to come."

If you've been living in a cave, 3D Dot Game Heroes is an action RPG published by Demon's Souls developer From Software. The game has a very unique and distinct art style that mimics 2D pixel art but in full 3D. The game looks like one big homage to Zelda and old NES RPGs, so if you're a retro gamer, be sure to check it out!

3D Dot Game Heroes hits Japan next week on November 5th.

UPDATE: We've been in contact with Sony and were informed that they are not publishing the title in the US. Any guesses as to who the publisher is? Atlus? XSeed? Ignition? Working Designs(sarcasm)?

gonna go with atlus, just because 8-)

Game got 8.5 on IGN:

9.0 Presentation

An awesome fusion of vintage and contemporary game elements, 3D Dot Game Heroes greatly benefits from a surplus of style.

8.5 Graphics

Sharp 2D sprites with a 3D makeover; some of the most unique and eye-catching visuals around.

6.5 Sound

Old-school, perhaps to a fault; even the greatest tunes can get old on infinite repeat. The sound effects are appropriately awful.

8.5 Gameplay

The cartoonish swordplay is a blast. A tried-and-true combination of exploration and dungeon-crawling, but it achieves a level of "retro" difficulty at times. Warning: May evoke nostalgia.

8.5 Lasting Appeal

You can easily lose 20 hours here or race through it in less than 10. The minigames, character creation and New Game + should keep retro gamers busy until Zelda is available in HD.

Started the game. 10 hours in, completely adored it so far  It has countless references to other games but it seems the dev team is completely in love with demons soul. They have even left messages in the dungeons ala DS.
