Basic ideas

Burning Man

Recommended Posts

I'm considering getting a wireless connection for online multiplayer (I don't think wired is allowed in my hostel room), but I don't have any ideas about what sort of connection I need. How much data transfer occurs? Do I need a fast connection, and if so, how fast? Do you have any ISP recommendations?

I'm planning to play Brink (FPS) and maybe Fable 3 (RPG) for now.

Might wanna rethink if you are going to get wireless for gaming. Everyone I know who uses one (Tata, Reliance etc) tells me it lags and drops packets which makes online gaming pretty hard.

Like I said, I'm 80% sure I don't have a choice. Is it really non-manageable or just irritating?

Oh, and how much data is transferred per hour or so?

I dunno. Dooby uses Tata Photon and he says it is bearable at best. Its not just the pings but the packet loss which can totally f**k you over in any online game.

Data transfer shouldnt be much. I dont really keep tabs cause am on Unltd conn.

Okay. My wired connection at college is pretty good, the only problem is that they blocked every non-browser port, so no online gaming or torrenting. If I get a connection, it will be purely for multiplayer. And yes, mainly FPS.

So yeah

No LAN gaming at your college?

You can get around the port blocking. Lag gets worse though. For wireless. you can ask anyone to look up ping times over a wireless connection for you, compare it to wired connections. My view: wireless is not good, especially for FPS.

The data requirements were much less (than console) back when I was on the PC, may have changed now. If you run any voice software, you can change the codec to reduce data transfer. You can check total usage through your in game console, data monitor software or by asking your ISP.

Tata Photon definitely has an option for limiting total data usage, so that you don't use up additional bandwidth by mistake.

No LAN gaming at your college? :O

CS, AoE and Warcraft. I want stuff like BFBC2 and Borderlands. I tried Borderlands co-op with a friend once, but for some reason it didn't work. It's rare to find people playing the same game as you at the same time. All the games on LAN are pirated, so we keep switching. And I'm the only 'hardcore' gamer among my friends. They game, but they also do a lot of other stuff (Like watching TV shows :P ).

Hmm... I was pretty sure you couldn't. There was a migration to a NAT server a while ago and because they forgot to do the needful, DotA players tore it a new one. Following which they closed the appropriate ports. What is your getaround strategy? I have some ubergeek network experts I can refer to for assistance/reference.

There's one guy who has a wireless connection, I can ask him to help me out. What does he need to do and how?

If that's the case, could you (or someone else) do a quick check and let me know?

You might enjoy older games with competitive ping more than newer games over your wireless (by wireless you do mean the EVDO/3G types, right?) connection (unless Indian/Asian server). Ask some of the people still into PC gaming.

Good luck finding data usage, too much work for me to help you with. However, I'll give you ping comparisons for Tata Photon and BSNL (Yahoo & Google servers).

Checked simultaneously, ping to the same IP address.

Yahoo

TP: Between 298-350, infrequently going as high as 528.

BS: 233-242, tighter & lower band. No sudden spikes.

Google

TP: 145-165, no sudden spikes.

BS: 100-105.

So Tata Photon was not as bad as I thought, but then again, no clue how it will work out while gaming.

^^ You have to figure in for packet loss. Trust me, I have seen packet loss on wireless and if it happens its unplayable. 100 ping or 1000 ping wont matter.
Actually there was no packet loss while I was testing... at least that is what I got from the numbers the ping thing threw up (could be wrong). Maybe it was because it was a full bar connection? I've certainly seen the TP connection 'freezing up' sometimes... and the connection quality and speed both vary quite dramatically.

EDIT OP you might want to PM Aft, he plays off Steam/PC a lot.

Wireless is ok - not anywhere as good as LAN obviously. But not completely bad either. It's manageable - I've played KZ2 and MW2. KZ2 was highly playable (it's got pretty good netcode) and MW2 was ok playable.

Just to be clear. I am not talking about going wireless off a wireless router. That should generally work fine unless your wireless adapter is a POS. I am talking about a dedicated wireless connection from your ISP. eg Tata Photon.
