Common language mistakes in posting

The increasing number of instances where IVGians are butchering the English language have driven me up the wall far enough to prompt this thread.

We'll list some common grammatical and language errors made by people posting on IVG along with the correct spellings, grammar, usage and other tips. I'll list the errors by category and will keep adding instances as they become evident from the mindless slaughter perpetrated on IVG and through your contributions and suggestions.

1] Spelling mistakes

The most common type of language butchery on IVG. This list will first list the correct word followed by the various satan spawn variants generated on IVG.

Correct Term / Satan spawn variants

  • Paid / payed
  • It "cost" me Rs. 10 / it "costed" me Rs. 10, how much did it "costed" you?
  • Dying / dieing
  • Losing / loosing. Another common mistake is to use "loose" instead of "lose" to denote defeat.

2] Grammatical errors

The second most frequent crime against the language.

Correct Usage / Satan spawn variants

  • "You're" correct / "Your" correct
  • He is better "than" me at MW3 / He is better "then" me at MW3
  • I would "have" done it / I would "of" done it
  • Using the apostrophe to denote the plural form of words is wrong. Its (coupons) not (coupon's)

SMS and chat culture go a long way in spoiling a persons English. I remember when MSN messenger was a rage, back in school, I used to chat so much that I started writing 'I h8 tis' or 'ppl' etc. in my notes and during exams. Ofcourse, I immediately corrected them, but that became the first thing I ended up writing. Thankfully, I nipped it in the bud and reduced my chat time and also changed my chatting patterns to writing full words and proper English. SMS wasnt an issue for me, thankfully, because by the time I had got a mobile phone for myself, I had already experienced this chat phase. I didnt make the same mistake again.
