STAR CITIZEN launches a ship design contest with up-to $30,000 up for grabs

StarCitizen.jpg

Fresh off blasting past $21 million in crowdfunded support, Star Citizen’s latest challenge isn’t about boosting its bottom line. The Chris Roberts-led project is looking for modders, designers, and concept artists to develop “the next great starship,” according to the space sim’s official website. And there’s $30,000 waiting for the individual or team who puts together the best design.

Registration for the contest opens October 31 and closes December 31. The contest will run through June 2014 as the final 16 teams are whittled down to a final group. There are also $10,000 and $5,000 prizes for the respective second and third-placed teams.

Chris Roberts: Star Citizen is a PC game, will never be "dumbed down for a lesser platform"

image01.jpg

Taking to the community forums, creator Chris Roberts addressed rumors that Star Citizen would be dumbed down for console release—and destroyed them.

Star Citizen IS a PC game, it will NEVER be dumbed down for a lesser platform. We will NOT limit the input options or supported peripherals to the lowest common denominator. We will NOT pass on features and technology just because they will only run on some hardware configurations.”

Roberts continues to list the things that he loves about developing for PC, and why a console port—for either PS4 or Xbox One—is unlikely to ever happen.

As far as consoles go Star Citizen will never be on the PS3 or Xbox 360. As for the next gen consoles, PS4 and Xbox One, we have NO CURRENT PLANS, but my stance remains open and is consistent with the many interviews I’ve given… IF the platform holders (Sony & Microsoft) allow us to update the code and data without restrictions and odious time consuming QC procedures, IF they allow our community to openly interact with each other across platforms then I would CONSIDER supporting them.”

Star Citizen raises $30 million, increases funding for single-player campaign

Of the additional resources the achieved $29 million stretch goal unlocks, Chris Roberts writes, "the team at Foundry 42 has big plans for Squadron 42, and we’re going to provide extra funding to make it a true spiritual successor to Wing Commander! Squadron 42 can go above and beyond anything you’ve seen before. From opening with an epic battle instead of a training patrol to missions that seamlessly combine boarding and space combat, we aim to put you right into the action! Additional funding will let the team realize this, with enhanced mission design and more resources and animations to enhance fidelity."

Just days later, $30 million secured the Origin 890 JUMP ship, which you can read about here.

Star Citizen to feature 'Organisations', funding touches $34 million

SHOTATMOrear.JPG

Star Citizen is getting organized. And not in the sense that it's getting really good at raising incredible amounts of game development cash. No, we knew that already. Dubbed "Organizations," the upcoming space sim has announced a new faction/clan system that's being prepped to go live sometime next month.

The new feature is being integrated into the Star Citizen website and will see five different faction choices when it's released: Corperatons, PMCs, Faiths, Syndicates, and unaffiliated groups simply known as Organizations. That last option is for players who want to roleplay in a slightly more open-ended association, although none of the group types will be tied down by their specific "archetype," according to the developer.

Each of the five groups will set the internal ranking system for its members and decide their specific roles. This last perk sounds promising as it should allow for custom rank titles that don't necessarily conform to traditional military nomenclature.

Star Citizen's dogfighting module delayed to improve server backend

36552-star_citizen_wallpaper.jpg

"I feel that the Dogfighting module, especially with Star Citizen’s greatly increased profile, needs to be more polished than a typical 'alpha'. There are a lot of eyes on the game, and more than a few people wanting us to fail. Because Dogfighting is the first module that will involve significant gameplay, it has to be good – I don’t feel that we will get a pass just because it is pre-pre alpha."

"So we had two choices: either fork development and spend time building something that would involve throwing away work in order to meet the December deadline and deliver something that wouldn’t have the level of polish I’m happy with, or stay on course to build something that would lead directly into the finished game."

Organization System Launch

Greetings Citizens,

The first release of the web-based Organization system is now live. You can access the Organization Hub via the Community menu at the top of the page. From there, you can create your own organization or join an existing group. A special thank you to the hundreds of Citizens who volunteered to test the Organizations system over the past week; your feedback was invaluable in launching this update. The Star Citizen community has expanded beyond our wildest expectations over the last year; we’re excited to see how these new tools help with the process.

Chris Roberts shows off Star Citizen dogfighting

Chris Roberts has for the first time shown off Star Citizen's dogfighting.

In an on-stage demonstration at PAX East, Roberts showed how you'll get into your space ship, fly out of your hanger and shoot up ships in the upcoming space game.

Of note: the nifty helmet animation and cool target lock on effect. The impressive-looking PC exclusive is built using Crytek's CryEngine.

Star Citizen holds the world record for the most amount raised by a crowdfunded project. It's made over $40m so far.

There's no release date as of yet.

No way it's gonna look like that in 1080p, right?

Why do you say that Sire?

Do we have any details on what this DEMO was running on and what resolution?

Just guessing. I haven't seen that level of effects/fidenlity in 1080p before.

Really suspicious after the shady Watch Dogs and Dark Souls 2 videos.. :|

You haven't seen Crysis 3 maxed out?

This is CryEngine 3, it is technically possible to create the visuals which were DEMO-ed. All I really want is the details of the hardware driving everything.

Also, PC Exclusive.

Nope :/ I have Crysis 3 for the 360, which looks great as it is.

It's probably a small slice of the map as well, which might be why they can push those visuals at that frame rate.
