Chelsea have been named European Club of the Year in the European Club Association's annual awards. The Blues received the award from their peers after a season in which they won the Champions League but finished sixth in the Premier League - their lowest domestic position since Roman Abramovich took over at Stamford Bridge.

They beat Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona to the accolade on a night that saw four clubs honoured.

The association said the awards, introduced in 2010, aimed to "reward outstanding club performances, encouraging best practice and highlighting successful club management". Chelsea's award cited the club "for their outstanding achievement during the 2011-12 season on a European and domestic level".

Cypriot club APOEL won the Best Sporting Progress 2012 award "for their significant progress in European competition in the 2011-12 season", while Sampdoria were given an award for the year's Best Achievement - setting up a "Fair Play Village" in which rival supporters could socialise.

A Shakhtar Donetsk programme designed to help orphaned children in Ukraine, a country with a high number of orphans, won Best Community and Social Responsibility Programme.

UEFA withholds prize money from 23 clubs over finances

Europa League winners Atletico Madrid were among 23 clubs to have prize money withheld as European soccer's governing body UEFA revealed the first sanctions under its financial fair play rules on Tuesday.

UEFA said the clubs, who also include Qatari-owned La Liga side Malaga and Portugal's Sporting, were found to have "important" overdue payments to other teams, their own employees or social and tax authorities.

As a result their money for taking part in European competition would be withheld pending further investigation, UEFA said in a statement.

The clubs will have to provide an updated report on September 30 to a UEFA committee led by former Belgian Prime Minister Jean-Luc Dehaene.

"This ... measure will remain in force until all identified balances have been settled in full or until a final decision by the (UEFA committee) is taken," said UEFA.

Among other clubs under investigation are Dinamo Bucharest and Rapid Bucharest of Romania, Turkey's Fenerbahce and Serbia's Partizan Belgrade.

All are involved in this season's UEFA competitions.

There were no clubs from the English Premier League, German Bundesliga, Italy's Serie A or France's Ligue 1 among the clubs named.

UEFA approved the introduction of the far-reaching financial fair play rules in 2009 in a bid to reduce debt and introduce better and more transparent financial dealings among clubs playing in its competitions.

UEFA president Michel Platini said the measures have been introduced to stop clubs from spending their way into oblivion and to force them to live within their means.

They are also intended to stop wealthy owners from trying to buy success with limitless spending on players, distorting the transfer market in the process.

Transfer fees and outgoing payments have been monitored since the start of the 2011/12 season with clubs tasked with breaking even in 2012 and 2013 and being assessed during the 2013/14 season.

If clubs have not come into line by then, they could be thrown out of European competition.

" highlighting successful club management " Chelsea and good club management? :roflroll: :roflroll:

Is that sarcasm? The only difference between them & Portsmouth right now is Abrahimovich.. How is that good management FFS?

Dafuq are u complaining about cheeko ? If it's rampant firing of managers then well excuuuuuuuuuse us for wanting some accountability from the guy in charge, I mean come on we don't want to end up with the same gaffer for 7-8 seasons with zilch to show, like some clubs now do we ?

Apart from that I don't see any reason for the comparison. Pompy are close to getting into administration cause they spent much beyond their means, accumulating all and sundry (much like what qpr are doing right now) and could not manage the huge wage bill, more so after relegation.

Do you know how much losses did Chelsea post in last financial year or what is your wage to turnover ratio.. Don't talk idiotically about trophies when it comes to management of the football club.. The 'management' part is most about finances of the club + whether you can sustain it in the long term, short answer to that is NO!

You are one of the most poorly managed clubs in Europe with no accountability at all.. The only reason you are able to sustain it is because of your owner & his money but that doesnt mean your club is well run..

And when I say poorly managed that doesnt mean I am saying you will definitely turn out to be like Portsmouth but that is a very real possibility if Abrahimovich leaves & that possibility has to be factored in when judging your finances.. How is that a well run club then?

Everton is a well run club, Arsenal is a well run club but City, Chelsea & even United are not well run.. Fans don't care about it because most only care about the current time period & whether your club is winning something, a club is way more than just about trophies & it's long term future should always be taken into consideration.
