If you ask a MH veteran, those are amateur numbers (per their count), but for regular players like us, it's way too high. I played this game for almost 7 months straight last year during the lockdown until I realized I had built up an enormous backlog, but f*ck it, I didn't care. Didn't regret a single minute of it. Had to finally retire it in March this year after I ended up hitting max MR level. It's a bit hard to describe, but the whole community surrounding this game, it's general nature of monster hunting, online events, free monster addition content etc are just way too much fun. For me, the online aspect is something which sold me on this game. You don't need to have online friends/squad, just fire an SoS and someone random should join your game to help you out. Depending on their skill with the game, you'd either find someone who can mop the floor with that monster or probably struggle a lot. It's the fun of randomness. You can also join someone random persons hunt too and probably help them out (if you can). The PS4 community is highly active, even to this day. All the seasonal quests are permanently unlocked and the festive events are on bi-weekly rotation. This is probably a really good time to get into the game, but I'd highly recommend it only if you have Iceborne DLC. Can you recommend me the best starting weapon? Also, can you tell me about the general gameplay loop of the game? From what I garnered after half an hour, you take quests from the hub and then are directly transported to the quest's nearby region. From what I garnered after half an hour, you take quests from the hub and then are directly transported to the quest's nearby region. I would highly recommend trying out each weapon in the training area and see what suits you the best. For me, whenever I booted up the game, I always knew I need a weapon with speed and Dual Blades was always my go to weapon of choice. I also needed a ranged weapon for those pesky aerial enemies, so had to master Heavy Bowgun. These are the 2 weapons I used for majority of my playthrough. Just try to craft each weapon and go on a hunt. The Great Jagras would be your first story monster, so that would be a good target practice for you. Make sure you learn the moveset of the weapon and avoid button mashing, that's how you'll get killed in this game. The general gameplay loop is simple, hunt a monster, get it's materials to craft armour & weapons to fight higher tier monsters. That's the basic aspect. This is rather simple and is easily achievable. The real grind comes with obtaining rewards called 'Decorations'. Simply put, decorations are items used to be slotted in your weapon/armour to boost certain stats for your builds, thus giving a greater advantage to your offensive and defensive stats. These are completely RNG based and the higher tier quests and monsters you hunt, the better chances you have to score a unique decoration(s). The goal is to master a weapon (or multiple) and try to create builds which will offer the fastest and the most efficient kill times. At the start, I would just suggest taking it slow. Get to know your weapon, it's movesets, understand your inventory management (very important), creating a hunt loadout and then going for a quest. The storyline just progresses in a linear fashion; hunt a monster, cutscene, and next one. Learn every monsters attack patterns, use the environment to your advantage, set-up traps to capture them etc. These are a few key things to remember. Look up for a few basic tutorial videos. The game does a really shoddy job at not explaining some of the key things in a simple manner.

Aloy
I tried so hard to like the game but just I couldn't. It's not at all beginner friendly and the little things annoy me. Even the tutorials felt like reading a book. I was online in a random server and I started a quest. The game didn't tell me where to go, just the hint the monster is somewhere in the forest. I was running around the map like a madman when suddenly the game told me some random people with Chinese names entered my game and then a few minutes voila the monster is defeated. I didn't even get the loot. Then the next mission was an infamous escort mission. We were supposed to help get a cart somewhere(even the story/characters seem boring to me, can't even remember what was the purpose of the mission). A dragon like thing intercepted the way and I went head on. The dragon one shotted me and I was brought back the camp but the escort mission was sill on and the NPCs were giggling "oh boy it was a close call". The game is not built around to enjoy solo, and it's hella overly complicated and complex, which it doesn't need to be. Or maybe I'm just dumb and I can't invest this much time and energy to learn about this mess. The only way I see myself enjoying the game if someone literally hand holds me through at least the beginning portions of the game until I get a proper grip on it. I think I'm gonna uninstall it. Sorry @Ethan_Hunt I tried my best lol. It just doesn't click for me. Edited June 1, 2021 by Aloy
Ethan_Hunt
@Aloy I totally understand and no worries at all. No point in pushing for something you don't enjoy. You have no idea how many times I had to attempt to learn this game before it finally clicked for me. Also, I agree that it is definitely not beginner friendly due to the overwhelming mechanics it throws at you. However, if you do ever decide to go back at any point and/or need any help with it, I can re-install the game and hopefully guide you through it.
PhantomShade
Playing a lot of this since the past 2 weeks or so, the last MH I played was MHF2 on the PSP, lots of things have improved since then. I love the cat, he distracts the monsters, heals me sometimes, and is good for applying status on monsters with the correct weapon Really enjoyed this Teostra fight, not because he has a really good moveset, but because of the pretty zones and fire attacks, really makes the game's graphics pop. Faced XenoJiiva today, going to face him again now to farm his mats. Good they have added extra monsters like Lunastra, JhoJho etc, since I don't own Iceborne, really expensive it is even now.

Nice pics man! Glad to see you enjoying the game. Arch-Tempered Kulve Taroth is on rotation this week, so once you got a decent build lined up, join a siege and get some kick-a*s weapons from it. What platform are you playing it on? PC?

Yes, it is very fun, if you like the gameplay loop that is. Gameplay loop is kill monsters -> make armor and weapons from their parts -> to fight even stronger monsters Overall the gameplay is like Dark Souls or BB in terms of hard bosses and all. There are 14 different weapon categories to choose from, each is very different from the other, 3 of these are ranged weapon classes, bow, light bowgun and heavy bowgun, they work differently from the melee weapons Melee weapons have a ton of variety, you have simple and hard hitting but slow weapons like Greatsword and Hammer, you have transformable weapons like the type in BB like Charge Blade and Switch Axe, you have fast weapons like dual blades and longsword for animu feels, then there are lance and gunlance that come with a shield and the best guard/block among all weapon types iirc. btw one pointer since last i checked you have an infant, you cannot pause the game normally in a quest( i.e the actual combat part where you hunt monsters ), you have to put PS4 in rest mode or launch some app like Netflix to suspend the MHW game. co-op is not necessary for 95% of the monsters tbh, you can solo, monsters in solo also have the lowest HP, monsters in 4 man party quests have 2.6x more HP because more players.

Yes, on PC, regret I didn't get the "Master Edition" that had Iceborne included btw can this gold lizard be done solo by normal people or is it the one where you need a 4 man group( i've heard Fatalis is pretty much impossible solo, and so is Alatreon )
dylanjosh
Seems like people either love or hate this game. My friend gave it a shot and refunded it immediately. Others are spending 500+ hours in it.

Fatalis & Alatreon are end game Iceborne monsters and both of them can be solo'd but need end game builds with constant practice. You definitely need to get onboard the Iceborne train. There are so many quality of life changes and the end game is way better than base game. ?

Btw for builds I supposedly need the good gems, but i'm still getting thrash ones, i have the 2x flame tempered investigations, even those seem to drop the crap gems( non combat skills, and even if they are beneficial skills they are just the ones that give one level in the skill ), I'm HR37 now so haven't even unlocked the last Kirin main quest yet. For skills I use GS, so on the interwebs they say level 3 weakness exploit and lvl 3 focus is best, so according to that one build I came across is dragonking eye patch, damascus chest and waist, teostra arms and the legs were "optional", wonder which greaves would be good? Gems will definitely give you a good advantage, but armour combination can help till then. Decoration farming is a royal pain without Iceborne expansion. You'll need to keep farming Tier 3 tempered investigations for the best gems and then too it's random. I wouldn't bother with it if you'd be getting Iceborne soon. Just focus on perfecting your GS skills till then and hammer away at every high tiered monsters you can find. If you're HR37, then go slow, just hit up some event quests which has multiple monster, that should boost a lot of your HR rank. Here are a few decent options for GS in terms of survivability. Don't look at the last build, it's gem heavy build. The rest should be doable. Here's a quest that can boost your HR:

There is definitely a good game underneath all the messiness but I ain't got the patience and time to deal with all that. Maybe one day. The new Monster Hunter stories game (Can't remember the full name) looks sick though cause of the art style and turn based mechanics. Switch exclusivity is a bugger Edited June 30, 2021 by Aloy
