Micro Transactions Discussion Mega Thread

Recommended Posts

He says if sports games do this successfully it will come to other games. Well it was already tried with SWBF2 and NFS and got so badly backlashed that it started an anti-gambling campaign. So not really worried about it. Sports game fans can keep lapping this sh*t up all they want, I'm personally done with that cancer genre.

@Joe Cool Well they are including sports games genre - which has already widely accepted MTX, and mobiles - which can do MTX and nothing else.I guess they will have to divulge the gambling odds and scale back on MTX from now on due to the anti-gambling laws. Which is a good thing - especially considering the number of kids who play these sports games.

So long as they keep putting out games like Fallen Order, I'm satisfied.  Though I do get the feeling that the entire point Fallen Order was just for Respawn employees to develop an SP game to get the rust out of their system, prove to Disney that they are not gambling with SW franchise and to stick it to fans that they can still develop an SP game (Especially after the failure of Bioware). Which means they will go back to MTX games after this. I know it's a pessimistic outlook, but seeing EA proudly display those MTX figures - I kinda get the feeling that's what they are going for.

Their Ultimate Team mode is goldmine for almost a decade now and seem to keep getting bigger every year. It's crazy amount of $$$ just via MTX. $993 million from PC/Console MTX and $134m from mobile. I think around 60-70% of that just comes from FIFA UT.

I don't think anti-gambling laws made any major difference or making any progress at the moment. Only Belgium has currently banned FIFA UT. Unless full EU does (unlikely), it won't make a dent.

As for STAR WARS, surely 2 more games coming before their deal runs out with Disney. With how Fallen Order doing and deal coming to end in couple of years, they likely want to make good SW games to get their deal renewed. Disney will go with top publisher again to get as much $$$ as possible. So it will be either EA or Activision.

Yup not a dent, but at least it's a start. And the issue is out there now, along with a proper precedent. So in future, all EU courts should find it easier to control the gambling (US won't do sh*t, but then again FIFA is mainly popular only in EU)

As far as Star Wars, Disney might like $$$$, but Disney is also a family company first and foremost. The entire gambling and MTX thing was done with kids in mind. And the entire controversy was centered around children. That's one thing Disney would not want on their reputation (Supporting child gambling). So I guess next time they renew, they add in the MTX clauses on the contract, or they can even go with Microsoft, which probably has a bigger $$$$ than EA/Activision, no big-time controversy plus reaching out to everyone due supporting all HW due to their latest focus on Cloud (Most probably MS will even put their games on PS I guess)

Ubisoft

Over the past 9 months, digital represented 79.6% of bookings, up from 66.4% during the same period last year

PRI (Add On Content, DLC, MTX) = 42.5%.

Quote

Guillemot also noted that “player recurring investment” (PRI) is up significantly. PRI includes microtransactions, downloadable content, season passes, and in-game advertising. And this part of Ubisoft’s business jumped 7.4% year-over-year to €474 million ($520 million). PRI also accounted for 42.5 % of Ubisoft’s net booking compared to 32.6% in the previous year.

___

For the calendar year ended December 31, Activision Blizzard made $3.37 billion from microtransactions, which the company calls "in-game net bookings."

For the three-month quarter ended December 31, Activision Blizzard made $1.09 billion from microtransactions.

Not surprising where the focus of all these companies are going. Look at Acti-Blizz. They even managed to ruin a remaster of a legendary game (Warcraft 3 Reforged). But the thing is, despite all these so called "Profits", the share rate of Ubi, Take 2 and Acti-Blizz are going down. Meanwhile share prices of CDPR is continuously rising, and Nintendo prices are consistent and of a far higher value than these so-called publishers, that too over the years. (Source Google, which shows all share values).

Should tell these so called "AAA" publishers something. Don't know why they don't adopt the practices of those companies.

ATVI has huge market cap. They and other top publishers almost recover YTD and push into massive profits. While their share price didn't rise or doubled up like CDPR they still made more than them to keep the investors happy. CDPR is more of quality over quantity and that doesn't compete with these big publishers. While "gamers" like quality MTX free stuff but majority seems to don't care and still buy into MTX from other publishers.

Can easily see CDPR getting into MTX stuff with Cyberpunk. The profit from it for very minimal work is too good to skip.

Personally not interested in ATVI stuff anymore. Never knew one could ruin Warcraft 3. Acti will continue to live on CoD while Blizzard continue to scam their too loyal base with terrible game releases.

Two different lawyers Karim Morand-Lahouazi and Victor Zagury have now filed cases in France against EA, to classify EA's micro-transactions, especially FIFA's Ultimate Team as "Gambling".Their argument (From Source) -

The legal duo are arguing that in order to win in this game mode, you have to pay and gamble, spending money on FIFA card packs that could include any player available in the game.

Zagury explains further: “In this game, everyone wants to have a dream team to go as far as possible. My client spent €600 in five months without ever getting a big player. The developers of this game mode have created an illusionary and particularly addictive system. The more you pay, the more you have the possibility of getting big players. We believe that a gambling game has been integrated into this video game because buying packs is nothing more than a bet. It is the logic of a casino that has entered their homes. Today, an 11 or 12-year-old teenager can, without any restriction, play FUT and commit money because there is no parental control system in this mode. Belgium and the Netherlands have already taken up this issue.”

By filing this suit, the two lawyers are hoping to be able to gain insight into “the algorithm which generates the distribution of player cards in packs.”

32-year-old chauffeur Mamadou talked to L’Équipe about his FUT addiction: “You quickly become addicted to this game… whenever I buy a pack, I tell myself that this is the last time, but I always do it again. You get so frustrated when you don’t get good enough players that you buy again and again.”

Since the release of the latest game, FIFA 20, in September, Mamadou has spent €600 on packs and the best player he has got so far is Kostas Manolas (Napoli). Mamadou added: “I didn’t even know him! Put so much money in just to get Manolas… People I know have put in €2,000 or €3,000 it’s crazy… The amount I have spent has made me fall behind on my rent payments.”

He's 32 and instead of paying his rent, he blows it up on packs and then complains. Pack odds are already shown in-store. What was he expecting?

Gold 75+ Player - 100%

Gold 82+ Player - 18%

Gold 84+ Player - 4.2%

Manolas is 85 rated. Seems to work as intended and the guy was just dumb. Also, €600 is very small number to fight against EA.

While it will be cool but very unlikely this will change anything in France. More people need to show up or stop buying FPs which isn't happening as packs are always sold out.

Not happening. As long as this cancer stays in sports games I don't care personally. That genre is so far gone down the sh*thole its hopeless.

Blaming someone who got addicted (by a program DESIGNED to encourage that behavior) is what gives companies a free pass to do this sh*t.
