PS Fan
Eurogamer 3/10 IGN 4.5/10 Gamespot 4.5/10 Duke Nukem Forver 2.0 How Much of Aliens: Colonial Marines Did Gearbox Actually Make? Someone claiming to have worked for Gearbox warned over a year ago that development on Aliens: Colonial Marines was a "trainwreck", as the majority of the game was reportedly outsourced. Following a slew of less-than-flattering reviews for the game, internet sleuth Superannuation has uncovered some forum posts made around this time last year in which a person purporting to be an ex-Gearbox software dev warns fans not to get their hopes up for the game. “Primary development was outsourced to TimeGate Studios, which has a less than stellar past. "Hate to say it, but I wouldn’t get your hopes up too high for Colonial Marines," he wrote in May 2012. "I used to work at Gearbox, and the development of that game has been a total train wreck, going on what, 6 years now?"Gearbox isn’t even making the game, except for the multiplayer. As well as TimeGate, other studios credited on Colonial Marines include Demiurge Studios and Nerve Software. In an interview with IGN, Randy Pitchford explained what each studio did, saying that TimeGate worked on “probably about 20 or 25 percent of the total time" of the game. The source went on to explain that he left Gearbox to work for "a new company in Austin called Armature Studio”, and added that his past experience included, “work for Retro Studios in Austin making the Metroid Prime series.” We've reached out to Gearbox to see how much substance there is to the claim and will update the story when we hear back. http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/02/12/how-much-of-aliens-colonial-marines-did-gearbox-actually-make?abthid=511a4b498a07bf411400001b
dylanjosh
it’s dripping with fan service in the form of constant reference, re-creation, and respect for the source material that’s easily the best gaming representation of the franchise to date. From gunplay to co-op-friendly design, the core mechanics are largely spot-on, but more importantly, the various objectives do an incredible job of mixing it up. You’ll run-and-gun, make daring stands against waves of Xenomorphs, rescue your fellow Marines, find yourself forced to run away like a little weenie, and much more. While the action falls a bit short of the blend of first-person shooter and survival-horror I was hoping for, it’s all fairly well paced—thanks largely to some excellent level design and solid alien AI. This sets up some dreadful moments of anticipation, fearsome firefights, and even a few harrowing escapes, makingColonial Marines’ campaign an intense experience that’s sure to appeal to franchise buffs and shooter fans alike. All things considered, Colonial Marines is a consistently solid, occasionally spectacular shooter that does more than enough to honor the Alien name. It was going to be a tough task from the onset, but despite a ton of potential pitfalls for the talented team at Gearbox, they’ve gone a long way toward reminding us that, for folks who love the craft of building great games, the best challenges only seem impossible. - EGM, 9/10 I guess now we know who's paid.
