2K Games announced today the development of XCOM, a new first person shooter exclusively on the Xbox 360 and PC. XCOM is currently being developed by 2K Marin, the studio behind Bioshock 2, which sold millions since launched. The game will be filled with a suspense-filled narrative and distills it into a tense and unique first-person shooter experience.

“With BioShock 2, the team at 2K Marin proved themselves as masters of first-person, suspenseful storytelling, and with XCOM they will re-imagine and expand the rich lore of this revered franchise,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “Players will explore the world of XCOM from an immersive new perspective and experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride.”

XCOM is the re-imagining of the classic tale of humanity’s struggle against an unknown enemy that puts players directly into the shoes of an FBI agent tasked with identifying and eliminating the growing threat. True to the roots of the franchise, players will be placed in charge of overcoming high-stake odds through risky strategic gambits coupled with heart-stopping combat experiences that pit human ingenuity – and frailty – against a foe beyond comprehension. By setting the game in a first-person perspective, players will be able to feel the tension and fear that comes with combating a faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world.

XCOM will be available exclusively on the Xbox 360 and PC. No release date are set but it is slated to come out this year.

That screenshot is the least of their problems. Just had a look around the usual places on the net and every XCOM fanboy is having a meltdown (with some justification I might add). I bet you dont get that kinda hate too often just by announcing a game. I predict some damage control ASAP.

That is a ghastly screenshot. How do you release that as a game's first ever screenshot? And what's the red thing? Looks like a car from the Pixar animated film. And look at the power cables.

peace

maybe its not a screen tear but a ripple sort of effect from the umm what ever ripple-y thing the explosion is making ;)

Yea yea, so we all played it back in the day. An old-style X-Com (in terms of mass appeal/sales) would never work NOW.

Get over it.

Yeah thats why it makes even less sense to make it an FPS. The core fans will just be pissed off and will probably not give a crap. The new age codtards wouldnt even know the name and wouldnt give a crap. Either way, it would have been better if they had passed it off as a new IP.

But then again the only reason Bioshock 1 and 2 got a free pass in so many areas was because of the System shock pedigree, so they might be afraid of getting their balls nailed to the wall when they dont have a famous franchise to hide behind.
