Should I play the vanilla version or try some mods? No idea. I dropped it back then. It has some wind mechanic that affects bullets you shoot. Didn't knew and couldn't shoot anyone. You can start with that and go in order - Soc > CS > CoP I highly recommend using Stalker complete mod - it fixes and enhances lots of things wrong in the original game while still providing a vanilla experience.
